Nature is amazing! Take a close look at the world of insects, you’ll discover many unbelievable things. Consider butterflies, for example. They have beautiful, colorful wings. On summer days, you always see them flying freely.
But, did you know how butterflies become flying insects? 1 In the beginning, female butterflies lay a small and colorful egg on a leaf or stem (茎) of a plant.
It’s hard to believe that the egg will become something completely different in a few days. 2 This insect is called caterpillar (毛虫). It now has legs, eyes and a large body. A new life has begun. The caterpillar can eat, walk and see. But it is still not a butterfly.
Soon, after growing big, the caterpillar makes a cover for itself. It covers itself in the nice protective blanket (保护层) and goes to sleep. 3
After a period of time, the blanket breaks and a wet, weak butterfly appears. It now has six legs, a mouth, eyes and wings. Shortly, the wings fill with blood, and the beautiful, colorful butterfly spreads its wings and flies away. 4 . And the cycle begins all over again.
This is just one example of the wonders of nature. Look around the natural world, and you will learn many truly amazing things.
A.After a few weeks, this adult butterfly lays her eggs.

Passage 2
Mount Qomolangma is the highest mountain in the world. It lies in the Himalayas, between China and Nepal. Its height is about 8,848.86 metres—a measurement made by a Chinese team in 2020—and no other mountain on earth is as high as it.
Climbing Qomolangma is extremely difficult, even for experienced climbers. The temperature there can drop to -30℃, and the air is very thin, which makes breathing hard. Some climbers even risk their lives to reach the top.
The first Chinese team successfully reached the top in 1960, taking the northern route known as the “Death Route” for its dangerous conditions. In 1975, another Chinese team built a metal ladder on the Second Step—a steep, narrow part of the mountain—making it easier for later climbers to pass.
Today, Qomolangma is more than just a mountain: it’s a symbol of courage and perseverance. We must protect this “highest natural wonder” from pollution and other human harms.
1.What makes Mount Qomolangma special according to the passage?
A.It's the longest mountain in the world. B.It's the highest mountain in the world.
C.It's the deepest mountain in the world. D.It's the widest mountain in the world.
2.What is the height of Mount Qomolangma?
A.About 8,848.86 metres. B.About 11,000 metres.
C.About 416 metres. D.About 5,464 metres.
3.Why is climbing Mount Qomolangma difficult?
A.Because the weather is warm and the air is thick.
B.Because there are too many tourists on the routes.
C.Because the mountain is too short and easy to climb.
D.Because the temperature is low and the air is thin.
4.When did the first Chinese team reach the top of Mount Qomolangma?
A.In 2020. B.In 1975.
C.In 1960. D.In 1990.
5.What should we do to protect Mount Qomolangma?
A.Pollute it with climbing waste. B.Ignore its environmental problems.
C.Keep it away from pollution. D.Build more hotels on its foot.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D 4.C 5.C

B.They have strong, fantastic flying skills.
C.It’s one of the amazing wonders of nature.
D.It becomes a walking insect.
E.This stage is known as the “pupa (蛹)” stage.
