My arms got tired and I had to stop reading to rest. The problem made me think about inventing a book holder. Here was my invention process. First, I drew a simple design on a piece of paper. Then I collected some materials, including an old box with really thick paper and a clip, which is a small metal object to hold things together. Finally, I glued the pieces of paper cut from the box together and put the clip to the top. I opened my book and placed the book on it. The book was held by it perfectly. I made it. Now I just put the book holder on my desk. When I want to read, I don’t have to use my arms. I’m really proud of my little invention. It’s not very beautiful or perfect. But it really helps me enjoy reading more. Maybe I can make it better in the future, like adding a light. But for now, I’m just happy to have it.

On the first day of school, our teacher introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.
I turned around and found a little old lady with a warm smile. She said, “Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old.”
“Why are you in university at such a ‘young’ age?” I asked. She replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of kids, and then retire (退休) and travel.”
I knew she was joking. I was curious about what might have encouraged her to take on this challenge at her age.
“I always dreamed of having a university education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.
We became friends. Every day we would talk nonstop after class. I always enjoyed listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. And Rose easily made friends wherever she went.
At the end of the term, we invited Rose to make a little speech. She cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. I’ve learned a few secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.”
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity (机会) in change...”
23. When the author and Rose first met, they began their conversation in a ________ way.
A. polite B. strange C. serious D. humorous

D. Because she knew the difference between growing older and growing up.
25. The underlined word “That” in the last paragraph refers to “________”.
A. Growing older B. Growing up
C. Staying young D. Being happy

Your brain controls everything you do. It makes it possible for you to think, learn, create and feel; to blink and breathe and for your heart to beat—this fantastic control center is your brain. It is so amazing that a famous scientist once called it “the most complex thing we have yet discovered in our universe”.
Can this small grey organ, which weighs less than one and a half kilos, really do so much? Amazingly, your brain contains about 100 billion neurons, it would take you over 3000 years to count them all. Believe it or not, the activity in your brain never stops. Your neurons create and send more messages than all the phones in the world. And although one neuron creates only a little electricity, all your neurons together can produce enough electricity to power a light bulb.
So exactly how fast does your brain work? Well, imagine this: a bee lands on your foot. Neurons in your skin send this information to your brain at a speed of more than 240 kilometers per hour. Your brain then uses other neurons to send the message back to your foot to shake the bee off quickly. These neurons can send this information at more than 320 kilometers per hour. No computer has your brain’s unbelievable ability to deal with the amount of information coming from your eyes, ears and other sensory organs.
But how does your brain allow you to learn things that you will use in the future? The structure of your brain changes every time you have a new thought, remember or learn something. For example, riding a bike seems impossible at first, but soon you are able to do it. How? As you practice, your brain sends “bike riding” messages again and again. Soon, the actions are learnt and you are able to ride a bike easily from then on.
27. From the passage we know that neurons ________.
A. receive messages very slowly B. are only found in your skin
C. send messages to your brain D. need electricity to work
28. In Paragraph 3, the writer mentions computers to ________.
A. compare them with the human brain B. show how fast they have become
C. say that computers have no abilities D. ask people to use computers more
29. When you have a new thought, ________.
A. your brain will power a light bulb B. your heart beats faster
C. you remember something D. the structure of your brain changes
30. The article is mainly about ________.
A. all the steps when your brain learns things B. what an unbelievable organ the human brain is
C. how the brain makes people smarter than computers D. the things you can do to make your brain work faster
【答案】27. C 28. A 29. D 30. B

【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The structure of your brain changes every time you have a new thought, remember or learn something.”可知,每当你有新想法、记住或学到新东西时,你的大脑结构就会发生变化。故选D。

I'd love reading, but sometimes I find IT hard to hold a book for a long time. My arms got tired and I had to stop reading to rest. The problem made me think about inventing a book holder. Here was my invention process. First I drew a simple design on a piece of paper. Then I collected some materials, including an old box with really thick paper and a clip, which is a small metal object to hold things together. Finally, I grew the pieces of paper cut from the box together and put the clip to the top. I opened my book and place the book on IT. The book was held by IT perfectly. I made IT. Now I just put the book holder on my desk when I want to read, I don't have to use my arms. I'm really proud of my little invention is not very beautiful or perfect, but IT really helps me enjoy reading more. Maybe I can make IT Better in the future, like adding a light, but for now, i'm just happy to have IT. Hello everyone, i'm teddy. today. I want to tell you about a little invention I made.
