B At eleven, I decided to learn to swim. There was a pool at the YMCA offering exactly the opportunity. My mother always warned against it, and kept fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the YMCA pool was safe. I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and my father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me. The pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on one side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, “Hi, how’d you like to in the water?” With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end. I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wits — when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump to come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down, endlessly. When I came to consciousness, I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital. I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rolled by. It deprived (剥夺) me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the terror would return. This went on until July. I swam across the Lake Wentworth. Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me?” I had overcome my fear of water. 4. The author’s original fear of water was caused by ______. A. his poor skill in swimming B. his mother’s warning of drowning C. an outing to the beach with his father D. an unpleasant memory of the pool 5. Why was the author not scared to death when he was thrown into the water? A. He knew how to swim in the pool. B. He felt that the YMCA pool was safe. C. He was waiting for others to save him. D. He came up with an idea to go upwards. 6. By expressing “but I was not” in Paragraph 5, the author probably means ______. A. he was still a poor swimmer B. he had not overcome the fear yet C. he was not afraid of drowning any more D. he was not satisfied with the swimming training 7. What does the author’s experience with swimming teach us about overcoming fear? A. It is important to face our fears head-on. B. It is better to avoid situations that cause fear. C. It is impossible to overcome deep-seated fears. D. It is best to rely on others to help us overcome fear. C It’s been discovered that the world’s rarest seal (稀有海豹) uses hidden caves on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus to breed (繁殖) out of sight from humans. Scientists say the caves should now be protected to help the rare Mediterranean monk seals. Researchers from the University of Exeter and the society for the Protection of Turtles (SPOT) set up cameras in eight caves in northern Cyprus to monitor the monk seal population. The cameras are started by movement, so they start recording when something passes by. Between 2016 and 2019, the researchers found that three of the caves were used for breeding. One monk seal raised babies three years in a row in the same cave. There are only around 700 Mediterranean monk seals left in the wild and the species is listed as endangered. In the past, they used beaches along the north coast of Cyprus to breed but human activities such as tourism have gradually forced them to move elsewhere. In 2007, a survey identified 39 possible breeding caves. It was only in 2013, however, that a young seal was spotted in the area around the caves. This confirmation (证实) that seals were breeding in the area inspired the team to set up their special cameras in 2016. Knowing about these breeding caves will help experts to track the seal population more accurately. The researchers now want to give the seals in the area better protection. They’re hoping to make arrangements with local fishermen who set their fishing nets near the caves, which not only takes food from the seals but also risks catching the animals by mistake. The scientists would also like to protect the caves themselves from any nearby building developments. “The main breeding site we identify in this study currently has no protected status, but now we are working with local authorities to try to change this,” said Dr. Robin Snape of the University of Exeter. 8. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. All 39 caves were proved to be breeding sites. B. Fishing nets near caves are harmful to the seals. C. The cameras recorded seals only at night. D. The main breeding cave has already been under protection. 9. What encourages the team to set up cameras? A. Hidden caves in Cyprus. B. Support from local authorities. C. The fact of seals breeding in the area. D. Building developments near beaches. 10. What is Dr. Robin Snape’s attitude towards the future protection of the seals’ breeding caves? A. Supportive. B. Concerned. C. Uncaring. D. Regretful. 11. What can be the best title for the text? A. Measures to Protect Endangered Seals B. Human Activities Threaten Rare Seals C. Dangerous Mediterranean Monk Seals D. Secret Cave Shelter for Rarest Seals D Dreaming appears to have little connection to work. However, new research shows that when dreams are first recalled (回忆), people often draw connections between their dreams and waking lives, and the connections they draw affect how they think, feel and act at work. The team performed the studies that collectively captured approximately 5,000 morning reports of dream recall among full-time employees. The researchers issued morning field study, a single-day morning-to-afternoon study, and a two-week experience sampling study. “An awe-inspiring dream is highly impactful and memorable, often involving extraordinary experiences or interactions. For example, we arrive at work shortly after interacting with our loved ones who have passed away, narrowly escaping or performing arts of amazing ability.” Belinda, the chief of the study, said. “These experiences bleed into and affect our waking lives, including how productive we are at work.” Imagine you recall an awe-inspiring dream in the morning, and then later in the afternoon, your boss tells you to conduct 10 more interviews than you were expecting to do. You might now think that it’s not that big a deal because your awe-inspiring dream just puts everything into perspective. You have a greater realization that there’s a bigger world out there and you’re just part of it. “So, get a good night’s sleep for waking wonder!” Belinda added. Studies show that dreams appear in all stages of sleep and are impactful. However, the most vivid dreams — those most likely to have meaning and create waking wonder — appear during REM sleep. Because REM sleep takes place late in a given sleep cycle (循环) , getting enough and high-quality sleep will help you get the most out of your dreams. Sleep tracking devices can show when and how much time you spend in REM sleep, which help improve sleep schedules to increase the chance of having awe-inspiring dreams. For both managers and employees, how much or how well people sleep really means a lot, which can increase productivity at work. 12. What is paragraph 2 intended to explain? A. Why a dream is recorded. B. How the study is conducted. C. What the study revealed. D. Who joined in the research. 13. What can we learn about awe-inspiring dream from paragraph 3 and 4? A. A scary dream. B. A morning dream. C. An influential dream. D. A logical dream. 14. What does the last paragraph recommend? A. Sleep-tracking study. B. Quality sleep. C. Waking wonder. D. Healthy living habits. 15. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Dreams can be connected with productivity. B. Dreams impact all sleep stages. C. Dreams contribute to one’s mental health. D. Dreams are attracting greater attention worldwide. Caring for an aging parent can be overwhelming, especially when their needs seem endless. C 5. D 6. B 7. 根据第二段“I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and my father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.(我小时候就怕水。这始于我三岁的时候,我父亲带我去海滩。巨浪把我打倒,把我卷了过去)”可知,作者最初对水的恐惧源于和父亲去海滩游玩,被巨浪打翻的经历。故选C项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“But I was not frightened out of my wits — when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump to come out of the surface.(但我并没有被吓得魂飞神离——当我的脚触到底部时,我就会猛地一跳,跳出水面)”可知,作者之所以不是太害怕是因为他可以用脚触到泳池底部后往上跳,找到了向上露出水面的方法。 划线部分上文“Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished(最后,我决定找个教练。他一点一点地培养了一个游泳者。几个月后,教练的工作完成了)”讲作者学会了游泳,教练完成了工作。但根据下文“but I was not.  Sometimes the terror would return.(但我还没有。有时恐惧又会回来)”可知,上下文有转折关系,说明虽然教练完成了工作,但作者还没有,他仍然没有克服对水的恐惧。“but I was not”与“he had not overcome the fear yet”同义。 根据倒数第二段中“When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me?”(当我游到湖中央时,我把脸埋在下面,除了看不到底的水什么也没看到。我笑着说:“好吧,恐怖先生,你觉得你能把我怎么样?”)”和最后一段中“I had overcome my fear of water.(我已经克服了对水的恐惧)”可知,作者在湖中央勇敢面对自己的恐惧并最终战胜了它。所以作者的经历告诉我们要直面恐惧,才能战胜它。故选A项。 C It’s been discovered that the world’s rarest seal (稀有海豹) uses hidden caves on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus to breed (繁殖) out of sight from humans. Secret Cave Shelter for Rarest Seals 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据最后一段中的“They’re hoping to make arrangements with local fishermen who set their fishing nets near the caves, which not only takes food from the seals but also risks catching the animals by mistake.(他们希望与在洞穴附近撒网的当地渔民沟通协调,这些渔网不仅会抢夺海豹的食物,还存在误捕海豹的隐患)”可知,洞穴周边的渔网会伤害海豹。 根据第四段中的“This confirmation (证实) that seals were breeding in the area inspired the team to set up their special cameras in 2016.(海豹在此区域繁殖的这一确凿发现,促使研究团队在2016年布设专用监测摄像头)”可知,海豹在该区域繁殖的事实,推动团队架设监测相机。 根据最后一段中的“The main breeding site we identify in this study currently has no protected status, but now we are working with local authorities to try to change this(本次研究发现的核心繁殖洞穴目前暂无保护资质,但我们正联动当地部门全力推进合规保护工作)”可知,科研人员主动对接部门推进保护工作,态度积极主动、全力支持海豹保护工作。 通读全文,并结合第一段“It’s been discovered that the world’s rarest seal ( 稀有海豹) uses hidden caves on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus to breed (繁殖) out of sight from humans. Scientists say the caves should now be protected to help the rare Mediterranean monk seals.(研究发现,世界上最稀有的海豹利用塞浦路斯地中海岛屿上的隐秘洞穴繁殖,远离人类视线。科学家表示,现在应当对这些洞穴进行保护,以此救助珍稀的地中海僧海豹)”可知,全文围绕珍稀海豹隐匿海岛洞穴栖息繁殖展开,重点揭秘专属隐秘繁殖洞穴,同步配套保护方案。D项“珍稀海豹的隐秘洞穴栖息地”能概括文章主旨,适合作标题。 D Dreaming appears to have little connection to work. 12. B 13. C 14. B 15. Jen learned this when she began helping her mother with new health problems. She felt guilty every time she wanted a break. ___16___ As care coach Deanna explains, only when you take better care of yourself can you also take better care of others. Here are several practical steps that can help. Start by thinking clearly about what “boundaries” mean for you. ___17___ For Jen, the biggest problem was having to drive long distances every week for her mother’s doctor appointments. She solved this by calling in instead of going in person. It saved hours of travel time and greatly reduced her stress. Once you know your limits, communicate them calmly and consistently. ___18___ Jen’s mom wasn’t happy she stopped coming in person, but Jen reminded her that she could still ask questions and take notes by phone. It’s also important to accept both your own feelings — and the feelings of your loved ones. ___19___ Caregivers are human. It is normal to feel tired or upset, and protecting your own energy allows you to provide better care in the long run. Loved ones may want more help, but sometimes the answer has to be “no.” Above all, do not give in to guilt. Boundaries are not about leaving someone alone — they help protect your energy so you can be truly helpful when needed. ___20___ Many people face the same problem and ask the same questions every day. A. And remember, you are not alone. B. Actually, setting boundaries isn’t selfish. C. Identify what tasks create the most stress. D. Change may upset your loved one at first. E.
