So when our daughter Flora started asking for a cat several years ago, my wife politely refused her requests and we didn’t give it a second thought. Flora, though shares some of my wife’s persistence, so she continued to ask for a cat repeatedly for several years. Then a couple of things happened that made as take a closer look at things. When we went to Flora’s parent-teacher conferences, the teacher first handed us an essay about how my daughter wanted a cat, and then an imaginary story about where she would like to go on vacation: Catville. It was then that my wife and I came to the realization that our daughter wasn’t just messing around here. And it was time for us to break down. But before we brought our new cat home, my wife sternly warned us that she was not going to be the one to take care of or clean up after the cat. Flora was going to take full responsibility. Fine, my daughter said. We welcomed our mini family member into the house right around Christmas. We named her Goldy. When we got her, she peed everywhere. But other than that, she was perfect. My tough-talking wife gradually fell in love with Goldy. And Goldy fell in love with her. Of course, it’s not just my wife who loves Goldy. We all do. There are so many things about that cat that absolutely brighten our life, highlighted by how she nearly bursts with affection (喜爱) when we come home or wake up in the moning. From the moment Goldy came into our house, it seemed unreasonable that we didn’t have a cat before then. We should have settled down to the decision much earlier. 4. What led the family to rethink about the idea of keeping a cat? A. The author’s promise. B. The teacher’s advice C. The wife’s expectation. D. The daughter’s effort. 5. What does the underlined word “sternly” mean in Paragraph 3? A. Serously. B. Curiously. C. Anxiously. D. Ambitiously. 6. What kinad ot person is theauthor’s wife? A. Inspiring and patient. B. Principled and kindhearted. C. Virtuous and traditional. D. Positive and professional. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. A Comforting Cat B. My Determined daughter C. Best Decision Ever D. Family Means Everything C While AI’s influence on various industries like healthcare is widely discussed, the legal profession has received less attention. In fact, the business of law is well-positioned to achieve the highest ROI (投资回报率) from using AI. Law firms (公司) are seen as traditional but most have used machine learning for years. In the business of law, AI-driven time and cost savings are typically very high. The benefits have led to the appearance of a new type of law firm-AI-centric (aka AI-native) law firms. Staff (全体职工) and lawyers at AI-native firms make the most of AI for various tasks such as research. AI-native law firms also use AI to service customers who require personalized treatment. Every day, junior associates (初级律师) need to work fast and correctly, yet never miss anything important. The work can tire them, leading to mistakes. AI can do in seconds what takes days for a junior associate. Speed gives AI a great role in the legal field, with ROI well beyond the “traditional” 10 to 20 percent. AI-centric firms can grow without increasing the support staff. Wherever AI reduces costs, it frees up funds for marketing development. AI makes marketing communications faster and easier for law firms, as it does for other businesses. AI’s positive effect on work satisfaction is often underappreciated. According to a 2023 Thomson Reuters survey, lawyers at AI-native firms often send repetitive tasks to AI. Support staff and junior associates become, in effect, supervisors (监督人) of AI. This truly improves work satisfaction. Are law firms jumping on board and going AI-native in large numbers? Surprisingly the answer is no. According to another survey 60% had no plans to use AI. That’s good news for the other 40%. The legal profession is among the industries achieving the best ROI from the use of AI. Law firms should “get it” and enjoy greater growth and profitability. 8. What makes the new kind of law firm special? A. The high ROI. B. The effective use of AI. C. Focusing on AI cheating cases. D. Providing personalized treatment. 9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. Why AI is helpful to law firms. B. What high ROI means to law firms. C. When AI will take over traditional law firms. D. How law firms deal with marketing challenges. 10. What did the Thomson Reuters survey find? A. The legal profession often has high profitability. B. Support staff are very important to a law firm. C. AI contributes to increasing job satisfaction. D. Law firms are leading in using AI. 11. Which of the following will the author probably agree with? A. It’s time for law firms to go all in on AI. B. Safety is the major concern for law firms. C. AI technology should grow alongside the law. D. Law firm can be new and old at the same time. D People pursuing perfection and those valuing being on time often don’t see eye to eye in the workplace. But according to a recent study, it is better to deliver a good-enough project on schedule rather than perfecting it through procrastination. Researchers surveyed thousands of people in the U.S. and U.K., including managers and others whose jobs included evaluating others. They presented participants with the same examples of work, and then asked them to rate it. But first, they mentioned whether it was either submitted (提交) early, right at the deadline or late. Respondents who were told it was late consistently rated the work as worse in quality than those who were told the same work was early or on time. The study also found there wasn’t much benefit to submitting work early since evaluators tended to rank work submitted before and at the deadline as the same quality. Furthermore, it didn’t matter how late the work was submitted, with one day or one week delays viewed just as negatively and that remained the case if the employee gave their manager advance warning. A field experiment was conducted in a high school in China that had students grade pieces of art in a staged contest. The art was on a piece of paper that also included the date it was submitted. Even though the kids were told to ignore all other details on the paper other than the art itself, the version submitted after the deadline received lower grades. That study made the broader point that it didn’t really matter who set the deadline. In the eyes of the evaluator, any miss was a meaningful miss. However, the reason behind the missed deadline mattered, researchers found. If it was due to forces beyond an employee’s control, evaluators didn’t end up with as negative a view of the work as they did when the reason was one within their control. “If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know,” Maglio says. “That seems to be one of the few instances in which people cut you a break.” 12. What is the author’s attitude to on-time good-enough work? A. Opposed. B. Neutral. C. Favorable. D. Indifferent. 13. What can be concluded from the research result? A. Submitting work early means much in evaluations. B. Late work is judged more negatively than on-time submissions. C. Pre-communicated delays lead to positive evaluations. D. Minimal delays get better evaluations than long delays. 14. What does the author want to show by mentioning the field experiment in China? A. The art itself rather than other details counts. B. A peer-to-peer evaluation can be an informative tool. C. Kids tend to judge submissions more objectively. D. The research finding holds true across age and culture. 15. What can be implied from the last paragraph? A. Communication around deadlines is vital. B. Employees get unfair reviews. C. Bosses need to care about employees. D. A deadline is definite and unchangeable. Within weeks of chatbots’ launch, ChatGPT kicked off a new global race in artificial intelligence. 5. B 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第二段中“The benefits have led to the appearance of a new type of law firm-AI-centric (aka AI-native) law firms. Staff (全体职工) and lawyers at AI-native firms make the most of AI for various tasks such as research.(这些好处催生了一种新型律师事务所——以人工智能为中心(又称人工智能原生)律师事务所。人工智能原生公司的员工和律师充分利用人工智能进行各种任务,如研究)”可知,新型律师事务所的特别之处在于对人工智能的有效利用。故选B。 【9题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段中“AI can do in seconds what takes days for a junior associate. Speed gives AI a great role in the legal field, with ROI well beyond the “traditional” 10 to 20 percent. AI-centric firms can grow without increasing the support staff. Wherever AI reduces costs, it frees up funds for marketing development. AI makes marketing communications faster and easier for law firms, as it does for other businesses.(人工智能可以在几秒钟内完成初级律师需要几天才能完成的任务。速度使人工智能在法律领域发挥了重要作用,投资回报率远远超过了“传统”的10%到20%。以人工智能为中心的公司可以在不增加辅助人员的情况下实现增长。无论人工智能在哪里降低成本,它都会为市场开发释放资金。和其他企业一样,人工智能让律师事务所的营销沟通变得更快、更容易)”可知,第三段主要讲的是人工智能对律师事务所的帮助。故选A。 根据第四段中“According to a 2023 Thomson Reuters survey, lawyers at AI-native firms often send repetitive tasks to AI. Support staff and junior associates become, in effect, supervisors (监督人) of AI. This truly improves work satisfaction.(根据汤森路透2023年的一项调查,人工智能原生公司的律师经常将重复性任务交给人工智能。辅助人员和初级律师实际上成为了人工智能的监督者。这确实提高了工作满意度)”可知,汤森路透的调查发现人工智能有助于提高工作满意度。故选C。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Are law firms jumping on board and going AI-native in large numbers? Surprisingly the answer is no. According to another survey 60% had no plans to use AI. That’s good news for the other 40%. The legal profession is among the industries achieving the best ROI from the use of AI. Law firms should “get it” and enjoy greater growth and profitability.(律师事务所是否大量加入并采用人工智能原生技术?令人惊讶的是,答案是否定的。根据另一项调查,60%的人没有使用人工智能的计划。这对另外40%的人来说是个好消息。法律行业是从人工智能使用中获得最佳投资回报率的行业之一。律师事务所应该“抓住机遇”,实现更大的增长和盈利)”可知,作者可能会同意“现在是律师事务所全力投入人工智能的时候了”这一观点。故选A。 D People pursuing perfection and those valuing being on time often don’t see eye to eye in the workplace. C 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第一段“People pursuing perfection and those valuing being on time often don’t see eye to eye in the workplace. But according to a recent study, it is better to deliver a good-enough project on schedule rather than perfecting it through procrastination.(追求完美的人与重视守时的人在职场中往往意见不合。但一项近期研究表明,按时交出完成度合格的成果,好过拖延工期、一味追求极致完美。)”可知,作者对按时提交足够好的工作持支持态度。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Respondents who were told it was late consistently rated the work as worse in quality than those who were told the same work was early or on time.(被告知作品逾期交付的受访者,一贯会给出更低的质量评分;而得知同一份作品提前或按时交付的人,评价会更高。)” 根据第四段“A field experiment was conducted in a high school in China that had students grade pieces of art in a staged contest. The art was on a piece of paper that also included the date it was submitted. Even though the kids were told to ignore all other details on the paper other than the art itself, the version submitted after the deadline received lower grades. That study made the broader point that it didn’t really matter who set the deadline. In the eyes of the evaluator, any miss was a meaningful miss.(在中国一所高中进行了一项实地实验,让学生们在一个事先策划的比赛中给艺术品打分。艺术品印在一张纸上,纸上还包括提交日期。尽管孩子们被告知除了艺术品本身外,忽略纸上的所有其他细节,但逾期提交的版本得分较低。这项研究提出了一个更广泛的观点,即谁设定截止日期并不重要。在评估者看来,任何错过都是有意义的错过。)”可知,作者想通过提及中国的实地实验表明研究结果适用于不同年龄和文化。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“If it was due to forces beyond an employee’s control, evaluators didn’t end up with as negative a view of the work as they did when the reason was one within their control. “If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know,” Maglio says. “That seems to be one of the few instances in which people cut you a break.”(如果原因是员工无法控制的,评估者对工作的看法不会像原因是员工可以控制时那样消极。马格利奥说:“如果你错过截止日期的原因超出了你的控制范围,作为员工,你应该让你的经理知道。这似乎是人们会给你网开一面的少数情况之一。”)”可知,围绕截止日期的沟通至关重要。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Within weeks of chatbots’ launch, ChatGPT kicked off a new global race in artificial intelligence.
