Good afternoon, everyone, today my presentation is about the story behind fish and chips. A traditional dish that’s deeply rooted in British culture, fish and chips is a great British tradition with a fascinating history. Fish cooked in oil was introduced to England in the sixteenth century. Arriving in London with some immigrants as they settled down, fish cooked in oil became popular. However, the origins of the chips are less clear. It is said that one winter when the rivers froze over and there were no fish to cook, a housewife cut up some potatoes in the shape of fish and cooked them in oil. The earliest usage of chips was in Charles Dickens novel A Tale Of Two Cities. In the eighteen sixty, an immigrant to London combined fish cooked in oil with chipped potatoes. He started a efficient chip shop in London and the business was so good. That many other shops open soon.

It was a gray day. The cloudy sky had been there for 3 days in a row. Even when it wasn’t raining, there was little light. It looked like all the colors of the world had paled thanks to the gray sky overhead. It looked like a preview of the many winter days to come.
I was driving along in my car on my way home, putting on some music to lift my spirits but I still felt tired and run down from the lack of light.
Suddenly, Joy to the World was playing and I smiled. It had always been one of my favorite songs. Since no one was in the car with me to hear, I started to sing along in my weak and cracking (破裂) voice. Just as I started to sing, though, a crack appeared in the clouds and a ray of sunlight broke through. It shone through the window and landed on my face. I bathed in its light and warmth and felt such joy. Eyes welling up, I held back my tears and continued to sing. Then as quickly as it appeared, the crack in the clouds closed and the sun was hidden again. But its light remained in my soul. Absorbed in this little miracle, I continued to sing all the way home.
Life has its share of gray days and not just in the sky either. When these days appear, you have two choices. You can join in the grayness or you can be the light that finds a crack in the clouds and shines through to brighten another’s heart. For myself, I will always choose the latter.
Find that crack in the clouds then. Do your best to bring a little more light to this life. Do your best to bring a little more joy to this world. Do your best to share the love within you.
24. How did the author feel at the beginning of the drive?
A. Annoyed. B. Lonely.
C. Depressed. D. Anxious.
25. What happened when the author began to sing?
A. The sun broke through the clouds.
B. A passenger joined in the singing.
C. The music player stopped working.
D. The car window cracked suddenly.
26. What can we infer about the author from the passage?
A. She often listens to music when driving home to pass the time.
B. She prefers to keep her favorite songs a secret from others.
C. She is a person who chooses to stay positive and spread warmth in hard times.
D. She believes that sunny days are the only source of joy in life.
27. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Music improves our spirits.
B. Choosing light in life matters.
C. Life is full of ups and downs.
D. Weather affects mental health.
C 25. A 26. C 27. B

根据第一段“It was a gray day. The cloudy sky had been there for 3 days in a row. Even when it wasn’t raining, there was little light. It looked like all the colors of the world had paled thanks to the gray sky overhead.(那是阴沉的一天。 灰蒙蒙的天空已经连续三天都是这样了。 即便不下雨,天色也十分昏暗。 头顶灰蒙蒙的天空,仿佛把世间所有的色彩都褪去了光泽)” 以及第二段 “I was driving along in my car on my way home, putting on some music to lift my spirits but I still felt tired and run down from the lack of light.(我开车回家,放着音乐想振奋精神,但因缺少阳光仍感到疲惫不堪)”可知,作者在开车伊始,受灰暗天气影响,心情是沮丧的。
根据第三段“Just as I started to sing, though, a crack appeared in the clouds and a ray of sunlight broke through. It shone through the window and landed on my face.(然而,就在我开始唱歌的时候,云层中出现了一道裂缝,一缕阳光穿透而出。它透过窗户照在我的脸上)”可知,当作者开始唱歌时,太阳穿透了云层。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Life has its share of gray days and not just in the sky either. When these days appear, you have two choices. You can join in the grayness or you can be the light that finds a crack in the clouds and shines through to brighten another’s heart. For myself, I will always choose the latter.(生活中也会有灰暗的日子,而且不仅仅是天空灰暗。
C
In our hyper-connected world of social media, there’s a refreshing cure — one that’s good for your mental health, reduces stress and anxiety and even helps your immune system: being in nature. While any time spent outdoors is advantageous, there’s a “prescription” that can help you get the most benefits. It’s spending 20 minutes in your local park three days per week, five hours in a nature preserve each month and three days immersed in the backcountry once a year. It’s called the 20-5-3 rule, and it’s a science-backed formula that could revolutionize how we think about outdoor time.
Florence Williams, author of Nature Fix and Heartbreak, tells Yahoo Life: “Having a general guideline like this could be helpful to some people. It’s worth noting that it’s important for each of us to tune into what we need in a particular week or year.” Williams explain that when we’re experiencing extra stress, pain or heartbreak, we might need more time in everyday nature spaces or in deep wilderness. “The emerging science is an opportunity for us to notice how we feel when we’re outside, to recognize which elements of nature we most respond to and to prioritize doing the things that give us the restoration we need,” she says.
While spending time in your local park is beneficial, it requires s more frequent exposure to achieve the same stress-reducing benefits as a deep wilderness experience. That’s because in urban green spaces, we’re often still tied to our devices and surrounded by city sounds. It can be more like “nature-lite” if we’re not intentional about the time we spend outdoors.
The numbers back this up. Research shows that while a 20-minute walk in nature lowers stress hormones, these levels often bounce back within hours in urban settings. Compare this to multi-day wilderness experiences, where studies have documented health benefits lasting up to a month.
28. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By giving a definition. B. By listing numbers.
C. By offering an example. D. By describing a phenomenon.
29. What do we know about the 20-5-3 rule?
A. People may practice the rule flexibly.
B. The rule was created by Florence Williams.
C. Everyone must follow the rule without any change.
D. People should spend 5 hours in a local park every month.
30. Why does the author say urban green spaces are like “nature-lite”?
A. There are no real natural things.
B. The air quality there is much worse.
C. Various distractions reduce the effect.
D. People don’t like to stay there for long.
31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To advocate people to get close to nature.
B. To suggest a new treatment to mental illness.
C. To provide a prescription to improve physical health.
D. To recommend an approach to reducing stress and anxiety.
A 29. A 30. C 31. D
根据文章中第一段的句子“It’s spending 20 minutes in your local park three days per week, five hours in a nature preserve each month and three days immersed in the backcountry once a year. It’s called the 20-5-3 rule, and it’s a science-backed formula that could revolutionize how we think about outdoor time.(就是每周三天在当地的公园里呆20分钟,每月在自然保护区呆5小时,每年一次在野外呆3天。这被称为“20-5-3法则”,这是一个有科学依据的公式,可以彻底改变我们对户外时间的看法。)”可知,作者通过定义“20-5-3法则”来引入主题。故选A项。
根据文章中第二段的句子“It’s worth noting that it’s important for each of us to tune into what we need in a particular week or year.(值得注意的是,对我们每个人来说,在特定的一周或一年里调整自己的需求是很重要的。)” 故选A项。
根据文章中第三段的句子“While spending time in your local park is beneficial, it requires s more frequent exposure to achieve the same stress-reducing benefits as a deep wilderness experience. That’s because in urban green spaces, we’re often still tied to our devices and surrounded by city sounds.(虽然花时间在当地的公园是有益的,但它需要更频繁地接触,才能达到与深入荒野体验同样的减压效果。这是因为在城市的绿地中,我们经常仍然被我们的设备所束缚,被城市的声音所包围。)”可知,城市绿地中人们仍受电子设备干扰,且环境噪音多,导致减压效果不如荒野体验深刻,因此称为“nature-lite(低配版自然)”。故选C项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章内容,特别是第一段“In our hyper-connected world of social media, there’s a refreshing cure—one that’s good for your mental health, reduces stress and anxiety and even helps your immune system: being in nature. While any time spent outdoors is advantageous, there’s a “prescription” that can help you get the most benefits. It’s called the 20-5-3 rule, and it’s a science-backed formula that could revolutionize how we think about outdoor time.(在我们这个高度互联的社交媒体世界里,有一种令人耳目一新的治疗方法——它有利于你的心理健康,减少压力和焦虑,甚至有助于你的免疫系统:亲近大自然。虽然户外活动的任何时间都是有益的,但有一个“处方”可以帮助你获得最大的好处。就是每周三天在当地的公园里呆20分钟,每月在自然保护区呆5小时,每年一次在野外呆3天。这被称为20-5-3法则,这是一个有科学依据的公式,可以彻底改变我们对户外时间的看法。)”可知,全文核心是推荐“20-5-3法则”作为科学支持的减压方法,并解释其灵活性和不同自然环境的差异。故选D项。

Nicholas Dames has taught Literature Humanities at Columbia University since 1998. He loves the job, but it has changed. Over the past decade, students have become bewildered by the thought of finishing multiple books a semester. This development puzzled Dames until a first-year student shared how challenging she had found the early assignments. The student said that at her public high school, she was only assigned passages, but not entire books. “My jaw dropped,” Dames told me. This helped explain the change: It’s not that they don’t want to read. It’s that they don’t know how.
Failing to complete a 14-line poem without giving in to distraction (干扰) suggests one familiar explanation for the decrease in reading ability: smartphones. Teenagers are constantly drawn by their devices. Reading books, even for pleasure, can’t compete with TikTok. In 1976, about 40 percent of high-school seniors said they had read at least six books for fun in the previous year, compared with 11.5 percent who hadn’t read any. By 2022, those percentages had flipped.
But high school kids appear to be encountering fewer and fewer books in the classroom as well. Since the ability to read an entire book is difficult to assess, teachers focus on skills that are easier to measure. They have shifted from books to short passages, followed by questions about the author’s main idea, just as standardized reading-comprehension tests do.
Faced with this situation, many college professors feel they have no choice but to assign less reading and lower their expectations. This means students will miss out on the mental development that comes from reading entire books. Reading enlarges your sympathies. Deep reading — sustained focus on a text — encourages a number of valuable mental habits, including critical thinking and self-reflection, in ways that skimming or reading in short passages does not.
I can imagine worse preparations for the trials, and thrills, of Literature Humanities. But we’ve never forgotten the originals. To understand the human condition, and to appreciate humankind’s greatest achievements, you still need to read The Iliad — all of it.
32. What does the underlined word “bewildered” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Delighted. B. Confused. C. Satisfied. D. Relieved.
33. Why does the author list numbers in paragraph 2?
A. To highlight the rise of social media.
B. To clarify the problems of smartphones.
C. To illustrate the change in reading methods.
D. To demonstrate the decline in book reading.
34. What is a result of professors assigning less reading?
A. The shortage of learning motivation. B. The reduction of genuine sympathies.
C. The loss of cognitive growth opportunities. D. The restriction of personal academic progress.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards reading originals?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Cautious. D. Indifferent.
B 33. D 34. C 35. A
根据划线单词下文“The student said that at her public high school, she was only assigned passages, but not entire books. “My jaw dropped,” Dames told me. This helped explain the change: It’s not that they don’t want to read.
根据第二段“Failing to complete a 14-line poem without giving in to distraction (干扰) suggests one familiar explanation for the decrease in reading ability: smartphones. Teenagers are constantly drawn by their devices. Reading books, even for pleasure, can’t compete with TikTok. In 1976, about 40 percent of high-school seniors said they had read at least six books for fun in the previous year, compared with 11.5 percent who hadn’t read any.
根据第四段“Faced with this situation, many college professors feel they have no choice but to assign less reading and lower their expectations. This means students will miss out on the mental development that comes from reading entire books. Reading enlarges your sympathies. Deep reading — sustained focus on a text — encourages a number of valuable mental habits, including critical thinking and self-reflection, in ways that skimming or reading in short passages does not.(面对这种状况,许多大学教授感到别无选择,只能减少阅读任务量并降低期望值。

The work is piling up, pressure is mounting, and deadlines are approaching. How can we still get useful results if we need to make quick judgments and fast decisions? ____36____ Here’s how we can upgrade our minds.
Firstly, challenge your key assumptions. Based on past experience, our mind constantly makes assumptions about the world. However, what saves us time and energy can lead to wrong conclusions if they remain unchallenged. Start by working in a team and questioning each other’s assumptions. ____37____
You should also consider alternative explanations. Humans seek explanations, and we prefer the one that comes to mind first. ____38____ It pays to naturally look beyond the most obvious explanations. This is to avoid confirmation bias; when we ignore evidence that goes against a prior belief. A master thinker treats their preferred explanation just as an assumption.
____39____ They simply refer to the main factors influencing how things have been going or how they will go. If we practice watching for driving factors when we have time to think, we’ll be able to identify them more instinctively on occasions when we’re in a hurry. The master thinker prioritizes the factors that impact an issue the most.
Finally, consider the overall context. The master thinker considers the circumstances and conditions of an issue. ____40____ A few minutes to orient ourselves and reflect on the situation as a whole can once more save us time down the road. Only then is it time to consider the details and incorporate them back into said picture.
A. Moreover, try to focus on key drivers.
B. Attempt to think about problems wisely.
C. However, that isn’t necessarily the correct one.
D. This habit involves looking at the big picture first.
E. True expert thinkers know the limitations of their minds.
F. This collaborative approach enables your thinking to be challenged.
G. Actually, the habits of master thinkers can help in reasoning and making decisions.

Interpersonal Communication in the Age of Social Media
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Interpersonal Communication in the Age of Social Media
With the rise of social media, family interactions have changed greatly. Thus, it’s time to think about how social media shapes our family ties.
While keeping us digitally connected, it weakens face-to-face bonds. Family dinners, once filled with lively chatter, now often pass in silent scrolling. Although we are physically together, we may feel emotionally apart.
In my view, we should set some “no phone time” at home to bring back meaningful conversations. Besides, we can use social media wisely, like creating a family cloud album to record happy moments. Let’s make screens a bridge, not a wall, between family members. Only in this way can technology truly bring us closer.

An A for Mrs. Bartlett
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well-rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. So I’m in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “ Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina. ” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits
There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the “ good ” group.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph l:
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. Before I opened my mouth, she gently placed a hand on my shoulder, saying with a knowing smile, “ I know what you want, but your group needs you. ” So stunned was I that I couldn’t utter a single word for a moment. She had seen something in me that I hadn’t seen. Suddenly, a mixture of guilt as well as pride seized me. The power of being trusted made me stand straighter. “ I’ll help them. ” I replied in a firm voice. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did.
Paragraph 2:
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits. The project was going smoothly with our joint efforts. Besides, I found out Mauro was struggling with English, Juliette wore long skirts because of her religion and Rachel dreamed to be a fashion designer. They weren’t misfits, just people that no one cared enough about to try to understand — except Mrs. Bartlett. I was lucky to be given a chance to see other people in a new light. Mrs. Bartlett gave us an A on that assignment, which should be handed back, for she was the one who truly deserved it.

D. She believes that sunny days are the only source of joy in life.
