阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Four students write about their online experiences on the Internet.
Blog 1
I am Jack. As a blogger, I write a blog post every three days to share study ideas and personal stories. I often surf the World Wide Web and use a search engine to collect useful information. The Internet helps me inspire my readers and keep track of my growth. I also chat with friends online and enjoy the benefit that the online world brings. However, I never share my privacy or click dangerous links, and I always keep basic guidelines in mind.
Blog 2
My name is Lisa. I have gone through a tough time because of online abuse. Rude trolls left many embarrassing comments on my blog. They made fun of me in some posts, and I felt extremely upset. Cyberbully once became a terrible problem in my online life. Later I learned to protect my identity and avoid being a target of bad behavior.
Blog 3
I am David. I live in a province far from big cities. Now that Wi-Fi has covered most areas, I can attend online conferences and learn from excellent teachers. The Internet helps me keep in shape and study better. I store my learning files in a safe database and update them regularly. My computer works well and its battery can last a long time.
Blog 4
I am Amy. I often use my online account to buy daily things and sometimes enjoy a discount. I know clearly that identity theft may cause serious trouble, so I never give out my identity card number. Before I press a button or click a link, I always confirm the website is safe. Besides, I often take part in online activities for charity.
6. Who keeps learning files in a safe database?
A. Jack B. Lisa C. David D. Amy
7. What problem did Lisa experience online?
A. She lost her identity card. B. She faced rude trolls and cyberbully.
C. Her computer battery ran out quickly. D. She missed online conferences.
8. What do we know about Jack from his blog?
A. He gives study advice through his blog posts.
B. He buys daily goods at a discount online.
C. He helps collect money for charity projects.
D. He teaches others to use software and databases.
B
The Internet has deeply influenced the daily life of modern residents. With WIFI widely provided, people can surf the World Wide Web, stream videos, chat with others at a distance, and get information within seconds. A search engine helps them find materials efficiently, while software and network services make life more convenient: people can shop without cash, update personal information regularly, and keep important files in online databases.
Yet the Internet also brings hidden risks. A growing number of users suffer from privacy leakage or identity theft because they give out personal information without thinking. Many people click strange links or press a button without confirming safety, which may harm their devices or cause account loss. Worse still, some rude trolls post false information and carry out cyberbully, targeting individuals and making fun of them in public. Such behavior often leaves victims upset and embarrassed.
To use the Internet in a proper way, we should keep certain guidelines in mind. We should learn to define our online rules and control our actions. We must protect our identity and avoid being the target of online harm. We are also encouraged to use the Internet to inspire others, support charity activities, and keep track of valuable things in life. The Internet itself is neutral: its influence on us is decided by how we make use of it.
9. What can we learn about the Internet from Paragraph 1?
A. It allows people to communicate with others far away.
B. It makes databases free of charge for all users.
C. It reduces the need for search engines in daily life.
D. It helps residents stay away from all online dangers.
10. What does the underlined word “neutral” most probably mean?
A. Being of high technology and modern function.
B. Having both advantages and disadvantages naturally.
C. Being neither good nor bad in itself.
D. Being attractive but difficult to control.
11. What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?
A. Reasons for the popularity of online databases.
B. Dangers and negative behaviors that exist online.
C. Methods of protecting the battery of electronic devices.
D. Ways of running online charity activities successfully.
12. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show how to become an experienced blogger.
B. To introduce the history of the World Wide Web.
C. To advise readers on wise and safe Internet use.
D. To explain the development of network software.
C
Last summer, I travelled to a quiet county in the old kingdom. The landscape was so striking that I could not take my eyes off it. Green fields rolled into the distance, and the scent of flowers filled the air as I walked. Nearby stood an ancient mansion, whose high walls once stood for military defence and power.
I joined a small group of visitors and soon arrived at a wide courtyard. The crowd fell silent as our guide told stories of the ancestors who had lived there. Some rooms were turned into galleries, where paintings and old objects showed how people once enjoyed feasts, with wine, beer, snacks, butter and honey on the table. Local people were generous and warm; whenever we passed, they would greet us with friendly smiles.
Later we visited a cemetery not far away, which reminded us of the long passage of time. The location had seen many battles, as different groups once tried to break away or conquer the land. Yet the old custom remained, connecting the past to the present. Every individual could feel the weight of history and the achievements of those who came before. The whole journey was fascinating, and I left with deep respect for this land.
13. What can we learn about the author’s trip?
A. He visited a modern city with tall buildings.
B. He experienced history and local culture in an old county.
C. He joined a military team and took part in a battle.
D. He spent most of his time tasting wine and beer in pubs.
14. Why were the walls of the mansion built high according to the text?
A. To provide military defence and protection.
B. To serve as a port for business and trade.
C. To hold more cattle and animals inside.
D. To announce the use of new kinds of currency.
15. What did the gallery show to visitors?
A. Modern legal rules and new currency.
B. Paintings and objects showing ancient life.
C. Ways to make snacks like butter.
D. Evidence of how to surround the mansion.
16. What is the author’s attitude toward the place he visited?
A. Uninterested and cold B. Worried and nervous
C. Doubtful and critical D. Admiring and respectful
D
Searching online for the answer may get you a better grade on the homework. But it won’t necessarily help you learn. Guessing is a better method. Always first find the answers for yourself. It will help you do better on the exam. If you instead find and copy the correct answer, you’ll be less likely to remember it in the future.
For many years, students improved by answering questions and did best on the exam. But by the late 2010s, many students were doing more poorly on the exam than on the homework leading up to it. They would even ace the very first homework. That was the one that tested them on what they had not yet learned. In 2008, only around 3 out of 20 students did better on their homework than on the exam. But that grew over time. By 2017, more than half of the students did this way.
What had changed over those years? Students might blame themselves. They’d think “I’m not smart enough,” or “I should have studied more.” But something else was going on. One big thing was the rise of smart phones. They appeared in 2008, but were not common. Now almost everyone carries one. So it would be easier today to quickly go online and find the answer to just about my homework question. But students can’t use phones during an exam. And that might explain why they aren’t doing as well on the tests.
Coming up with answers on your own should lead to better learning for you students at any age. If you find and then copy the right answer, you’re taking the easy way out. And that is wasting a good practice chance. It may take a few more minutes to think of an answer on your own, then check to if it’s right. But that’s the way you’ll learn more.
Now that information is easily available to everyone all the time, it probably doesn’t make sense for teachers to expect students to take exams without searching online. Instead, teachers should come up with homework and exam questions that Google can’t easily answer.
17. What is the author’s attitude to finding answers online?
A. Uncaring. B. Mixed. C. Unsupportive. D. Unclear
18. How do students do on their exams and homework now probably?
A. They do worse on homework than on exams.
B. They do their homework as well as their exams.
C. Most of them do better on homework than on exams.
D. Most of them do better on exams than on homework.
19. What does the underlined word “ace” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Succeed in…easily. B. Hand in…on time.
C. Check…by oneself. D. Finish…early.
20. What does the author suggest to teachers?
A. They shouldn’t allow students to use phones. B. They shouldn’t give a closed-book exam.
C. They must cut off the Internet in schools. D. They should give students new questions.
