My name is Susan. Last summer, I got a travel award for my hard work at school. My parents took me to Beijing for a trip. We arrived at the airport and took a plane at 7:15 p.m. After we arrived, we went to Wangfujing Street. The street is about 1,818 metres long. It’s crowded and busy. We enjoyed the night life there very much. The next day, we visited the Great Wall. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. I couldn’t help thinking of the saying “He who has never been to the Great Wall isn’t a true man” when climbing it. It was such an amazing sight.
Though the trip was tiring, we felt excited and relaxed at the same time. This trip not only gave me great fun but also let me love our beautiful country more.

I still remember the day my mother stopped me, saying, “Lisa, you are the eldest. Please watch your words, especially in front of your younger siblings (兄弟姐妹).” I didn’t think I said anything wrong while talking to my friend on the phone. However, as I hung up, I saw my younger sister and brother watching me. Something changed inside me right then.
Now I notice the same thing everywhere. When I see kids on the street, my eyes always find the eldest one. These kids care about or protect their younger brothers and sisters. It makes me know that being the eldest child means having a lot of responsibilities (责任), no matter where you are from. Nobody tells you what to do. It’s just what a good eldest brother or sister does.
These feelings and duties grow little by little. It takes months, even years. I can see this change in small things. One day, I saw my little brother fall down and ran to him at once. Another time, when I got home, my little sister asked me to help her with her school project. I was tired, but we worked together and finished it.
These experiences make me feel strong and proud. All I want is to see them smile and feel safe. I set a good example for them by staying with them. This is the pride (骄傲) and responsibility of being the eldest.
