Many people work hard every day to make money. They believe money can make their life wonderful. With money, they can buy houses, beautiful clothes and delicious food. They can also travel to different places and enjoy life.
Money is very useful in daily life. It is a medium of exchange. People use it to get what they need. Sometimes money can even help people in trouble. When someone is poor or sick, kind people can use money to help them out.
However, money is not everything in the world. There are many more important things around us. Health, family love, true friendship and peace are all more valuable than money. No one can buy true happiness with money.
We should learn to value everything we have. We should make money in good ways, and spend money wisely. We must be grateful for our life, and care more about the people we love.

Parents and children often face the challenges of money. Common topics include setting the pocket money, learning to save, and deciding on expensive purchases. The goal of most parents is to teach their kids how to manage money wisely. The goal of most kids is getting money to spend. How can families balance these goals?
“All parents hope they’ll raise a money-savvy (善于理财的) kid, who’ll grow up to be an adult wise in their money use, “says financial (金融的) planner Peg Eddy. The key is letting kids learn by having a little money of their own.
The Tidler family in Denver found the best way to teach about money was to let their kids earn some. Their son, Ryan has made $7,800 by helping with his parents’ garden. Besides, he bought a bike and a wonderful sound system. And he is going to buy a car next year. Ryan has come to see the value in making his own money even when other kids are given money by their parents.
Learn Now, Save Later
Money skills are an important part of becoming a successful adult. David Brady, another financial planner, says, “Young people today will have much more responsibility for their financial future than their parents or grandparents.” Experts say, knowing how to manage money is the best way for kids to get what they really want. That means long- term planning and saving for big expenses like college or a car. It also means thinking of others, by making donations to charity.
Brady does remind kids. “They shouldn’t be thinking about money all the time,” he says. However, they should understand basic rules for earning, saving and investing (投资).
That knowledge is greatly needed. Over the past years, the average credit card debt of Americans ages 18 to 24 doubled, to nearly $3,000. Among high school students, four out of five have never taken a personal finance class.
Talking About It
Many kids want to learn how to manage their money. But parents think only about what kids shouldn’t do. They argue that kids are young and inexperienced, they may easily get in debt if they manage their own money. Giselle Lopez, 17, of New York City, learned the hard way. She was over $2,000 in debt on her first credit card. Her parents refused to pay, so Giselle got a job. Then she paid the debt off slowly herself. “Now every time I use it, I know that it comes from my own pocket,” Giselle says. “That gives me a sense of responsibility for my actions.”
Different kids will have different styles when it comes to money. Teaching them how to use money doesn’t have to mean setting strict rules. When children like Ryan and Giselle have their own money to consider, they can learn to set those rules themselves.
1.What is the main goal of most parents when it comes to their kids and money?

2.According to financial planner Peg Eddy, what is the key to raising a money-savvy kid?

A few days ago, I bought a T-shirt for 300 yuan. Compared to my other clothes, it was much more expensive. When my father found out, he was very angry and questioned if I made the right choice. That made me feel really upset. What should I do?
Justin
Hi Justin,
Try to put yourself in your parents’ shoes. Your parents work hard to make money to bring up the family, so they have the right (权利) to know how you spend money.
When I was young, I knew little about money. Once I asked my parents for a robot car as my birthday gift. When it arrived, I was very excited.
I played with the car the whole day, but then I lost interest in it. Several weeks later, I saw a robot dog on TV and I wanted this new toy again. I already forgot about the robot car.
When you grow up and get a job, you will know how hard it is to make money. Then you’ll understand your dad. In my opinion, this T-shirt is too expensive for you. Instead of spending a lot of money on the latest fashion (最新时尚), you should buy things that will be useful to you in the long term. I think you should spend money wisely.

It’s easy to see the fun in buying a huge ice cream or going shopping with friends, but saving money can be even more exciting. That’s because saving creates opportunities and opens the door to all kinds of adventures.
The key to successful saving is setting a goal. Get a pen and paper, and write down how much it costs. Then work out how much you can afford to save each week and how long it will take you to reach your goal. Some weeks later you might decide to save a little more than planned so that you can reach your goals even faster.
To avoid accidentally spending your savings, it’s a good idea to keep them separate from the rest of your money. For example, you could do this by using a money box or a savings account.
When you save your money in a savings account, you have the opportunity to earn interest (利息). This is money that a bank pays you for leaving the money there and the longer you leave money in a savings account, the more interest you will earn. Some parents set up a savings account because they want to put some money away for their kids’ future.
If you’re new to saving, start off by thinking of some fun goals, like taking a holiday or going to a concert. Every penny you save brings you one step closer to reaching your goal and what could be more exciting than that?
1.What is the key to successful saving?

2.How could you avoid accidentally spending your savings?

3.What can you get when you save money in a savings account?

When you are in your favorite clothing store, everything is so cheap and fashionable(时尚的) in your eyes! Even if you don’t need anything, you still leave the store with bags of new clothes.
This doesn’t seem so bad. However, there are a lot of other costs behind the low price. It’s clear that the fashion industry is terrible for the earth. It uses a lot of resources(资源) and pollutes the environment with waste.
Fashion is one of the least sustainable(可持续的) industries. We’ve all become our own waste managers, collecting fashion waste in our homes. It doesn’t just take up space but also ends up in landfills(垃圾场). Three out of every five pieces of clothing are sent to landfills. Luckily, second-hand clothing is becoming popular. It’s cheaper. More and more people choose to buy second-hand clothing. The value of the second-hand market may reach $80 billion(十亿) by 2029, an increase of 185% compared to the value at present.

(2015·北京·中考真题) Black Friday
Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday. The day after it has been known as Black Friday. It is the start of the holiday shopping season, and it has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the US since 2005.
Most stores offer big sales on Black Friday. They open their doors quite early in the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts (打折). Some items (商品)like TVs and cloths are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these items. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.
Black Friday is a great time to go shopping. However, there are problem. The biggest one is that there are not enough low-priced items. Each store may only have a few. These items are in great need, so people stand in long lines to get them. They may wait three to four hours before a store opens. They may be hoping to get a low price on a TV or computer, but not everybody can get one. Some people leave, disappointed.
The situation makes people worried. Some Black Friday events have been crazy. There have been fights over toys among shoppers. Some workers have even been hurt by large crowds. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan to go, you will expect large crowds and a bit of pushing.
So where does the name “Black Friday” come from? It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The police called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic it caused. In the 1960s, stores tried to rename the day “Big Friday”. It did not stick. The name “Black Friday” continued to spread across the country. It seems that it is here to stay.
Now people all over the country take part in Black Friday events. It is even spreading to other parts of the world. Stores have held Black Friday events in the UK, Australia, and Brazil since 2012. In Mexico, stores offer a weekend of discounts every year. They call it “El Buen Fin”, which means “the good weekend” in Spanish. I guess people everywhere like to buy things on sale.

Knowing how money works in a family is important because it can help teenagers make smarter choices and get ready for the future. Many teenagers might not think about it, but they can actually help their family with money matters.
Ways to help family with money

3 Learn about earning money. Some teenagers do small jobs or help with chores at home to earn extra money. This teaches them that money comes from hard work and helps them understand how to spend it wisely.
