61.Dear Jack,
I am very delighted to know that you want to start a club to carry forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture. Personally, I recommend a Chinese calligraphy club. And my reasons are as follows.
To start, in our nation, calligraphy has always been considered as one of the most significant arts, which will help foreigners to know more about Chinese culture. Second, unlike doing Taichi which needs a big space and specific costumes, practicing calligraphy can be easy to operate. All it asks is a table with the Four Treasures of the Study, which refer to brush, inkstick, paper and inkstone. Finally, practicing calligraphy is a good way to improve students’ perseverance, for it needs patience to practice.
In a word, starting a calligraphy club is definitely advantageous. And I highly recommend starting a calligraphy club.
Yours,
Li Hua

Troubled by scoliosis (脊柱侧弯) since the age of four — a condition that causes the spine (脊柱) to curve abnormally and affects roughly 100, 000 children in America each year — Anne had to wear a rigid plastic brace (支架) 19 to 22 hours a day to prevent the curve from exacerbating as she grew.
Most of her classmates were kind. Still, Anne often felt set apart. In quiet moments, a sense of loneliness would wash over her — she was tired of feeling different from everyone else.
That year, the Easter Bunny brought her a basket with a special doll. The doll, Chelsea, is Barbie’s sister, and she, too, wore a back brace for scoliosis. “She’s just like me!” Anne cried to her mother, Nicole, who smiled as the little girl examined every detail, right down to the doll’s curved spine. Anne played with Chelsea every day, bringing the doll everywhere. She felt a sisterhood with another girl like her.
Weeks later, Anne voiced a heartfelt wish: “Mom, I wish all girls with scoliosis could have this doll so they don’t ever feel alone either.” Nicole saw renewed determination in her daughter’s eyes and helped turn the idea into a family mission. Anne’s twin brother and her dad all jumped in to help. They launched their efforts by starting a lemonade stand during a neighborhood sale, and then created a GoFundMe page on the Internet.
After a local news station featured their story, the doll’s maker stepped in to support the cause, supplying all the dolls they needed. What began as a goal to donate50 dolls quickly grew beyond expectation. Now 11 years old, Anne and her family have donated more than 870 Chelsea dolls to hospitals nationwide, bringing smiles to countless children.
“Even if you feel alone, you’re not.” she shared. “Everybody has something. It’s what you do with it that matters — so choose to help others to be strong in their journey.”
45.What does the underlined word “exacerbating” in Paragraph 1 mean?

A.By running a drink stand. B.By applying for a webpage.

48.What message did Anne want to convey through the dolls?

It’s hard to predict which songs will become hits. It’s even more difficult to predict which artists topping today’s charts will go on to record more hits. Now a study provides some tips about how to avoid being a one-hit wonder.
Artists with more variety in their field have a better chance to land repeat hits, says Justin Berg, a social scientist who researches creativity and innovation. But there’s a dilemma for artists who want to be popular over the long term. Variety isn’t what helps artists land that first hit, Berg reports. It’s the similarity of a new song to recent hits.
Berg used a database of about 3 million songs from 1959-2010 and then turned to a system that rates songs on 11 variables (变量), including danceability, energy and key. Berg then noted how closely related hit songs were to the hits from the previous calendar year. He also made portfolios (作品选集) for most of the artists who had at least one hit song, so he studied the variety and novelty (新颖) of the songs they had created at the time of their first hit.
Berg found that musical artists with what he termed low-creativity portfolios that were closely similar to other already existing music were about twice as likely to have early success. But those who had more creative music were more likely to achieve a series of hits.
Since the data end in 2010, the research might fail to show the current state of popular music, according to Noah Askin, a computational social scientist. “Musicians are changing how they write songs to make them more attractive on TikTok,” says Askin. “So much of it now is: How memorable is a given song?”
Berg doesn’t want his research to play down the achievements of one-hit wonders. “A lot of them in their time were quite famous and successful,” he says. “You go out and try to make a song that catchy. It’s not an easy challenge.”
49.What helps a singer achieve lasting success according to Berg?
A.Good taste in music. B.The variety of their works.
C.Personal connections in the industry. D.Their music’s similarity to recent hits.
50.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The historical-development of pop music. B.The social functions of pop music.
C.The findings of Berg’s research. D.The process of Berg’s research.
51.What does Askin think of Berg’s research?
A.It might be the first of its kind. B.It may be out of date.
C.It could inspire new TikTok hits. D.It would raise questions among musicians.
52.What is Berg’s attitude towards one-hit wonders?
A.Worried. B.Doubtful. C.Positive. D.Carefree.
D
Having spent my childhood in nature, I’ve long focused on the link between human and environmental health. These experiences shaped me, making me feel more alive, curious, and connected to the world and life cycles. I’ve always lived close to nature, believing we feel better because we belong to it.
Over time, I’ve realized that human’s well-being and nature’s health are inseparable, like two sides of a coin. Despite scientific advances, we often overlook nature’s healing (治愈) power. Many of our most effective medicines originate from substances found in wild plants and marine organisms. The willow (柳树) tree bark gave us the foundation for aspirin, now used around the world to ease pain. And the sweet wormwood (艾蒿) plant gave us artemisinin, a powerful cure for malaria. Protecting biodiversity is saving species and safeguarding nature’s source of drugs.
The One Health concept, recognized by WHO, confirms our health depends on nature’s well-being. Biodiversity loss threatens the systems that feed, protect, and heal us, creating new risks like poison in food and water and rising disease rates.
Nature’s ability to sustain us is ecological and personal. Studies show spending time in nature reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and strengthens the body’s defense system. Brief moments in nature can ease stress and sharpen attention, reminding us how closely our bodies and minds are adjusted to natural rhythms.
For young people, this connection is powerful and increasingly needed. Yet, children’s outdoor time has declined. Through my program Sow My Dream, I, as a female environmental advocate, have seen nature awake n wonder and belonging in children, tending to their minds, bodies, and hearts.
In our urban and digital world, nature has become a place to visit, not live. Rebuilding this connection strengthens our health and communities. Green and blue spaces bring people together, building a sense of belonging. Well-being is shared, as parks, rivers, and forests sustain us all. Caring for these spaces is an environmental duty and an act of mutual care.
53.What made the author pay attention to the link between human and environmental health?
A.Her childhood life in nature. B.Scientific studies on biodiversity.
C.Her work experience in a hospital. D.The One Health concept from WHO.
54.Why does the author mention the willow tree bark in paragraph 2?
A.To introduce common wild plants. B.To show nature has healing power.
C.To explain how medicines are made. D.To prove plants are more useful than animals.
55.What does the One Health concept emphasize?
A.The need to protect endangered species. B.The importance of scientific research in medicine.
C.The impact of digital technology on health. D.The relationship between human health and nature.
56.What does the author stress in the last paragraph?
A.The decline of urban green and blue spaces.
B.The need for more environmental protection laws.
C.The importance of rebuilding our bond with nature.
D.The negative effects of digital technology on health.

A Rubbish Collector's Work Is Never Done
Brian Kane was a rubbish collector in Denver, Colorado. Eight hours a day, five days a week, fifty weeks a year, he rode on the back of a garbage truck. At each stop, he would jog to the back of buildings, then drag heavy rubbish cans to the truck. Brian never complained.
Brian saw these hardships as opportunities to become strong and fit. His job was a training ground for his lifelong dream: to climb Mount Qomolangma. On his thirtieth birthday, Brian took a leave from his job and flew to Nepal to begin the long, difficult journey up Mount Qomolangma.
Brian first climbed to a base camp. He planned to bring three oxygen containers with him to the top. At 29, 028 feet, it would be hard to survive without extra oxygen. Over the next two months, Brian climbed to 26, 000 feet, to Camp Four—the last place to rest below the top of the mountain. But when Brian saw this camp, he fell to his knees. “Rubbish!” he cried. Nearly a thousand empty oxygen containers littered the camp area. Humans had turned this beautiful, far-away place into a big rubbish pile. Brian was very sad. But with a strong determination he continued to follow his dream. Two days later he stood proudly on the top of Mount Qomolangma. He had reached the “roof of the world!”

根据第一段中“Anne had to wear a rigid plastic brace (支架) 19 to 22 hours a day to prevent the curve from exacerbating as she grew.(安妮每天必须戴19到22个小时的硬塑料支架,以防止随着她的成长,脊柱侧弯情况exacerbating)”可知,戴硬塑料支架是为了防止脊柱侧弯情况加重,exacerbating意思是“恶化,加重”,与progressing意思相近。
根据第三段中“The doll, Chelsea, is Barbie’s sister, and she, too, wore a back brace for scoliosis. “She’s just like me!” Anne cried to her mother(这个玩偶切尔西是芭比的妹妹,她也因为脊柱侧弯戴着背部支架。安妮哭着对妈妈说:“她就像我一样!”)”可知,安妮非常喜欢切尔西玩偶是因为这个玩偶和她一样患有脊柱侧弯,反映了她的处境。
47.细节理解题。根据第四段中“They launched their efforts by starting a lemonade stand during a neighborhood sale, and then created a GoFundMe page on the Internet.(他们首先在社区义卖期间开了一个柠檬水摊,然后在网上创建了一个GoFundMe页面来发起努力。)”
根据最后一段中““Even if you feel alone, you’re not.” she shared. “Everybody has something. It’s what you do with it that matters — so choose to help others to be strong in their journey.”(“即使你感到孤独,你也不是一个人。”她分享道。“每个人都有自己的问题。重要的是你如何处理它——所以选择帮助别人,让他们在旅途中变得坚强。”)”可知,安妮想通过玩偶传达的信息是在面对困难时要保持积极乐观的态度。

A.Worried. B.Doubtful. C.Positive. D.Carefree.
根据第二段中的“Artists with more variety in their field have a better chance to land repeat hits, says Justin Berg, a social scientist who researches creativity and innovation.(社会科学家Justin Berg从事创造力与创新方面的研究,他指出,在自己所从事的领域内拥有更多多样性的艺术家更有可能取得持续的成功)”可知,Berg认为艺术家作品种类的多样性有助于他们获得持久的成功。
根据第三段中“Berg used a database of about 3 million songs from 1959-2010 and then turned to a system that rates songs on 11 variables (变量), including danceability, energy and key.(Berg使用了1959年至2010年约300万首歌曲的数据库,然后转向一个根据11个变量对歌曲进行评级的系统,包括可舞性、能量和调性)”以及“He also made portfolios (作品选集) for most of the artists who had at least one hit song, so he studied the variety and novelty (新颖) of the songs they had created at the time of their first hit.(他还为大多数至少有一首热门歌曲的艺术家制作了作品集,因此他研究了他们在第一首热门歌曲创作时的歌曲多样性和新颖性)”可知,本段主要描述了Berg的研究过程,包括他使用的数据库、评估歌曲的系统以及他如何分析歌曲之间的相似性和艺术家的作品选集等。
根据倒数第二段中的“Since the data end in 2010, the research might fail to show the current state of popular music, according to Noah Askin, a computational social scientist.(据计算社会科学家Noah Askin称,由于数据截至时间是2010年,因此这项研究可能无法反映当下流行音乐的状况)”可知,Askin认为Berg的研究可能已经过时了。
根据最后一段中的“Berg doesn’t want his research to play down the achievements of one-hit wonders. “A lot of them in their time were quite famous and successful,” he says. “You go out and try to make a song that catchy. It’s not an easy challenge.”(Berg并不希望自己的研究贬低那些一曲成名者的成就。“他们中很多人在自己的时代是相当有名和成功的,”他说。“你出去试着写一首那么朗朗上口的歌试试。这可不是一个容易的挑战。”)”可知,Berg对昙花一现的音乐人持积极态度。

【答案】53.A 54.B 55.D 56.C

根据第二段“Despite scientific advances, we often overlook nature’s healing (治愈) power. Many of our most effective medicines originate from substances found in wild plants and marine organisms. The willow (柳树) tree bark gave us the foundation for aspirin, now used around the world to ease pain.(尽管科学不断进步,我们却常常忽视大自然的治愈力量。许多效果显著的药物,其原料都源自野生植物与海洋生物。柳树树皮为阿司匹林的研发奠定了基础,如今阿司匹林已在全球广泛用于缓解疼痛。)”可知,提及柳树皮是为了论证自然具备治愈能力。
55.细节理解题。根据第三段“The One Health concept, recognized by WHO, confirms our health depends on nature’s well-being.( 世界卫生组织认可的“同一健康”理念证实:人类的健康依赖于大自然的良好状态。)”
根据最后一段“In our urban and digital world, nature has become a place to visit, not live. Rebuilding this connection strengthens our health and communities. Green and blue spaces bring people together, building a sense of belonging. Well-being is shared, as parks, rivers, and forests sustain us all. Caring for these spaces is an environmental duty and an act of mutual care.(在如今城市化、数字化的生活里,大自然成了人们前去造访的去处,而非赖以栖身的家园。重新建立人与自然的联结,能够增进我们的身心健康、凝聚社群力量。绿地与水域将人们汇聚在一起,营造归属感。公园、河流与森林滋养着每一个人,福祉由所有人共享。守护这些自然空间,既是一份环保责任,也是一种彼此关怀的体现。)”可知,作者在最后一段强调了重建我们与自然的联系的重要性。

Dear Jack,
I am very delighted to know that you want to start a club to carry forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture.
Yours,
Li Hua
