Xiao Kong: Oh, hello, yes. Come with me — I’m going to the temple right now. By the way, what does Achilles’heel’ mean?
William: Oh, it means that something is my weakness — I’m really bad with maps! So do you know much about Confucius? He’s one of my favourite philosophers. He was such a wise man.
Xiao Kong: Oh, yes. I was born here. In fact, I believe I am a descendant of Confucius himself.
William: No way, you’re pulling my leg, right? So how do you know you’re related to Confucius?
Didn’t he live over 2,500 years ago?
Xiao Kong: Yes, but his family tree is well recorded. He has over three million descendants. Sorry again, what does ‘pulling my leg’mean?
William: Oh, sorry, it means to joke with someone. Anyway, so you’re actually going to the temple to pay respects to your relative?
Xiao Kong: Well, yes. But I’m also meeting my study group there. We are doing a research project on Confucius’ideas on education. You know, Confucius was a great educator, and he had many great ideas about education. For example, he talked about the relationship between learning and reflecting. He believed that learning without reflecting leads to confusion ... Oh, look, the temple is just over there William: Oh, great! What’s that big building over there?
Xiao Kong: Oh, that’s the famous Dacheng Hall. You know, it’s so well-respected in Qufu that no other building in the city can be taller than it.
William: Wow, now that’s respect. That’s a little bit like my hometown — Stratford-upon-Avon.
Xiao Kong: Wait, you mean where Shakespeare was from? What a coincidence — Confucius and Shakespeare, two of the greatest minds in history! I really want to visit the UK — I’m really interested in British history and culture.
William: Oh, that’s great! So later we can go for a cup of tea and have a chat about it. And it would be great if you could take me somewhere to get my watch fixed.
Xiao Kong: OK, no problem! So come and meet my study group — we can tell you all about the temple. And how long are you staying in Qufu? I can show you the Cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion as well ...
William: Really? That’s so kind! I need all the help I can get — I’m like a fish out of water!

According to Holstein, “Many people want to travel the world and take huge risks, but never do. Don’t just live your life hoping your wildest dreams will become a reality someday. B
The current US traffic signal (信号) system has been in place for more than 100 years. But experts are now studying ways to connect technology-equipped vehicles (交通工具) with signal systems in order to improve safety and traffic flows.
Most US traffic signals currently include three lights to direct drivers at crossroads: red, yellow and green. But it might make sense to add a fourth colour, possibly white. This colour could inform motorists when there is a large collection of self-driving vehicles in a particular area. When many self-driving vehicles are present, the additional light would signal other drivers to follow the lead of those vehicles. The North Carolina State team thought that such changes are likely years away. One reason for this is because this kind of system would require between 40 to 50 percent of all vehicles on the road to be self-driving.
Waymo is a self-driving vehicle company owned by Google’s parent, Alphabet. Waymo had already started ride-sharing services that use full self-driving vehicles in Los Angeles, California and Austin, Texas. Those services do not use a fourth traffic light. However, officials and companies should think very carefully before deciding on, and moving forward with, major infrastructure (基础设施) changes.
Researchers at the University of Michigan are also testing different methods. They have carried out a test programme in an area outside the city of Detroit. Their research collects data on the speed and location of General Motors (GM) vehicles in the area. The data has been used to change the timing of city traffic lights in an effort to improve traffic flows. The area near Detroit where the testing is taking place has 34 traffic signals. It was chosen because lights in the area are set to change at the same times each day. This is the case for more than half of traffic signals nationwide. These signals are not connected to cameras or sensors to watch traffic flows in real time. Danielle Deneau is the director of traffic safety in Michigan. She said results of the University of Michigan research changed the timing of green lights only by a few seconds. However, Deneau added, even that was enough to improve traffic flows.
45.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.The white signal mainly directs dangerous traffic.
B.Self-driving vehicles are not yet popular in the US.
C.The white signal will change the basic traffic rules.
D.The signal system in the US now has four colours.
46.What’s the author’s attitude towards major infrastructure changes?
A.Supportive. B.Concerned. C.Unclear. D.Careful.
47.What is the method being tried by the University of Michigan?
A.To add more signal colours.
B.To change the green signal time.
C.To get more traffic information.
D.To connect more cameras or sensors.
48.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Past and Future of Traffic Signal in the US
B.Reasons for Changes in Self-driving Vehicles
C.Researchers: Smarter Vehicles Could Greatly Change Traffic Signals
D.American Traffic Signal: One of the Most Effective Management Strategies
根据第二段“When many self-driving vehicles are present, the additional light would signal other drivers to follow the lead of those vehicles. The North Carolina State team thought that such changes are likely years away. One reason for this is because this kind of system would require between 40 to 50 percent of all vehicles on the road to be self-driving.(当有很多自动驾驶汽车出现时,额外的信号灯会向其他司机发出信号,让他们跟着这些汽车走。北卡罗来纳州立大学的研究小组认为,这种变化可能还需要几年的时间。其中一个原因是,这种系统需要道路上所有车辆的40%到50%是自动驾驶的)”可知,额外的信号灯这种变化还需要几年,因为需要道路上有40%到50%的车辆是自动驾驶。由此推知,目前自动驾驶汽车在美国还没有普及。故选B。
46.推理判断题。根据第三段“However, officials and companies should think very carefully before deciding on, and moving forward with, major infrastructure (基础设施) changes.(然而,在决定和推进重大基础设施改革之前,官员和企业应该仔细考虑)”可知,作者对于重大基础设施改革持有仔细的、谨慎的态度。故选D。
根据最后一段“The data has been used to change the timing of city traffic lights in an effort to improve traffic flows.(这些数据已被用于改变城市交通灯的时间,以改善交通流量)”和“She said results of the University of Michigan research changed the timing of green lights only by a few seconds.(她说,密歇根大学的研究结果只改变了绿灯的时间几秒钟)”可知,改变绿信号灯的时间是密歇根大学正在尝试的方法。故选B。

Getting a high grade in an exam depends partly on how much you can remember. So, improving memory is crucial to success in studying. But is there anything that we can do about it? One solution might be walking backwards.
According to a new study published in the Journal of Cognition, walking backwards can boost (增强) the brainpower in the short term.
In the study, 114 volunteers were asked to watch a video in which a woman had her bag stolen. Then they answered 20 questions about the details shown in the video. Ten minutes after watching the video, the volunteers were divided into three groups. The first two groups were told to move forwards or backwards 10 meters while the third group was asked to stay still on the same point.
The researchers found that the backwards-walking group got two more correct answers on average than the other two groups. This suggests that a relationship between the concepts (概念) of time and space is essential to the way our minds form memories.
“Time is really expressed via (通过) space,” Aleksandar Aksentijevic at the University of Roehampton in the UK told New Scientist.
When we walk backwards, everything we learn becomes strange to us. “This forces the brain to think in a different way - it’s a rewiring (重新连线) and changes the focus,” US neuropsychologist Christine Weber told Forbes. It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active and alert (警惕的) in the limited time. Naturally, our short-term memory will be improved significantly.
Apart from improving our memory, walking in reverse (相反地) also plays an important role in physical health, especially fitness.
A study published in Journal of Biomechanics in 2012 found that backward walking puts less strain and requires a smaller range of movements from the knee joints (膝关节). Thus, there’s less pressure and pain in the knees.
In addition, walking in reverse, compared to forward walking, is more challenging. It requires you to use muscles and movements that you probably rarely use, making it a perfect way to change your exercise routine for greater fitness gains. Meanwhile, by making people put in extra effort, it naturally burns more fat and calories.
49.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “crucial” in Para 1?
A.understandable B.unrelated C.useless D.important
50.Which benefit is not mentioned by walking in reverse?
A.Thinking in a different way. B.Improving our memory.
C.Improving our intelligence. D.Strengthening our body.
51.How the researchers draw their conclusion?
A.By interviewing. B.Through questionnaire.
C.By referring to data. D.Through experiments.
52.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Step back to get a brain boost.
B.Walking back or walking forward.
C.How to improve memory.
D.Improving brain power to get good grades.
【答案】49.D 50.C 51.D 52.A
根据划线词前文“Getting a high grade in an exam depends partly on how much you can remember. (考试得高分在一定程度上取决于你能记住多少。)”可知,考试得高分在一定程度上取决于你能记住多少,由此推知记忆力对于取得好成绩很重要,划线词所在句意为“因此,提高记忆力对学习的成功至关重要”,crucial意为“重要的”,故选D。
50.细节理解题。根据第六段中“‘This forces the brain to think in a different way - it’s a rewiring (重新连线) and changes the focus,’ US neuropsychologist Christine Weber told Forbes. It almost always means that our brain needs to be more active and alert (警惕的) in the limited time. Naturally, our short-term memory will be improved significantly. (美国神经心理学家Christine Weber在接受《福布斯》杂志采访时表示:‘这会迫使大脑以不同的方式思考——这是一种重新布线,改变了注意力。’这几乎总是意味着我们的大脑需要在有限的时间内更加活跃和警觉。自然,我们的短期记忆会得到显著改善。)”可知,倒着走会迫使大脑以不同的方式思考并提高短期记忆力,根据倒数第三段“Apart from improving our memory, walking in reverse (相反地) also plays an important role in physical health, especially fitness. (除了提高我们的记忆力,倒走对身体健康,尤其是健身也起着重要的作用。)”可知,倒着走可以使身体强壮,C项“提高我们的智力”文中未提及,故选C。
51.细节理解题。根据第三段“In the study, 114 volunteers were asked to watch a video in which a woman had her bag stolen. Then they answered 20 questions about the details shown in the video. Ten minutes after watching the video, the volunteers were divided into three groups. The first two groups were told to move forwards or backwards 10 meters while the third group was asked to stay still on the same point. (在这项研究中,114名志愿者被要求观看一段视频,视频中一个女人的包被偷了。然后他们回答了20个关于视频中所示细节的问题。看完视频十分钟后,志愿者被分成三组。前两组被要求向前或向后移动10米,而第三组被要求在同一点上保持静止。)”和第四段中“The researchers found that…(研究人员发现……)”
根据全文内容,结合第二段“According to a new study published in the Journal of Cognition, walking backwards can boost (增强) the brainpower in the short term. (根据发表在《认知》杂志上的一项新研究,倒着走可以在短期内增强脑力。)”可知,文章主要介绍一项研究发现,倒着走可以在短期内提高记忆力,并对人的身体健康有益。A项“倒着走使大脑得到增强”为最佳标题,故选A。
In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with (跟上) the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants(仆人), Momand and his wife also hired (雇佣) a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.
It was like a race (比赛), but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series (系列) appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of (厌倦) keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr Jones always seems to be ahead.
53.Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they _________.
A.want to be as rich as their neighbors
B.want others to know or to think that they are rich
C.don’t want others to know they are rich
D.want to be happy
54.It can be inferred (推断) from the story that rich people like to _________.
A.live outside New York City B.live in New York City
C.live in apartments D.have many neighbors
55.Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short stories because “Jones” is _________.
A.an important name
B.a popular name in the United States
C.his neighbor’s name
D.not a good name
56.According to the writer, it is ________ to keep up with the Joneses.
A.correct B.interesting C.impossible D.good
【答案】53.B 54.A 55.B 56.C
根据第一段中“In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what ‘keeping up with (跟上) the Joneses’ is about. (在美国,当一个人变得富有时,他希望别人知道。即使他没有变得很富有,他也希望人们认为他很富有。这就是“攀比(跟得上Jones)”的意义所在。)”可知,有些人想要攀比是因为他们想要别人知道或者认为他们富有。故选B。
54.推理判断题。根据第二段中“He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants (仆人), Momand and his wife also hired (雇佣) a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors. (他结了婚,和妻子搬到了纽约城外一个非常富裕的社区。当妈妈看到有钱人都骑马时,他每天都去骑马。当他看到富人都有仆人时,妈妈和他的妻子也雇了一个仆人,为他们的新邻居举行盛大的聚会。)”可知,Momand结婚后和妻子搬到了纽约市郊外一个非常富裕的社区,并且看到富人的一些生活方式后进行模仿。由此可以推断出,富人喜欢住在纽约市郊外。故选A。
根据第四段中“He called it ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ because ‘Jones’ is a very common name in the United States. (他把这本书叫做《与琼斯同行》,因为“琼斯”在美国是一个很常见的名字。)”可知,Arthur Momand使用“Jones”,是因为这在美国是一个非常常见的名字。故选B。
56.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr Jones always seems to be ahead. (但一个人必须厌倦试图跟上Jones的步伐,因为无论做什么,Jones先生似乎总是领先。)”可知,人们不要试图去攀比,即跟得上Jones,因为无论一个人做什么,Jones先生似乎总是领先一步。这意味着无论怎样努力,都很难真正攀比上别人,所以作者认为能跟得上Jones是不可能的。故选C。

阅读下面短文和问题,根据短文内容和每小题后的具体要求,完成对该问题的回答。
Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico called the Flower Gardens. A team of professional researchers, led by the scientist Dr. Matt Phillips, was trying to learn more about the fish and other creatures that live in this part of the sea. The Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore and we spent three days on a boat.
The team used a piece of underwater equipment called a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to collect information. The ROV could measure water depth and temperature and it also had a camera that sent live film back to the boat. The ROV was great fun. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times.
However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite frightened — mainly because I couldn’t see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn’t afraid anymore. It was amazing to see the colourful fish swimming around and I could see all the way to the Flower Gardens, which are almost 30 metres down.
I will never forget the Flower Gardens. The trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projects. The team were very friendly and everyone was happy to explain what they knew about the sea. It was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goals in life. The experience will definitely encourage me to work harder to become a scientist.

Last September an American started a trip through Southwest China on a standard bike she had bought at a local shop. In three months, Jennifer Holstein cycled 2,500 kilometers through three provinces with just two small bags.
Living in Beijing, her life was already great. But Holstein felt the urge to travel the world and look for adventure. It was mid-August of 2021 that the idea came to her to travel China by bicycle. At that time, Holstein had never cycled for more than 20 kilometers around her local city of Beijing.
Holstein shared an experience from the beginning of her trip when she found herself stuck in a tunnel (隧道) with a flat tire. It was dark and hot, and she was so scared because she had never changed a tire before. Suddenly, a group of cyclists old enough to be her grandparents came and rescued her.
In addition to receiving the kindness of people across China, Holstein also experienced several unique cultural experiences by attending three local weddings. She spoke about one wedding in detail, “I was in the middle of a small village in Sichuan province, and I was taken into a local Tibetan family’s home and they invited me to take part in a wedding. They gave me a dress and even did my makeup. I never thought I would ever have the chance to take part in a Tibetan wedding.”
According to Holstein, “Many people want to travel the world and take huge risks, but never do. Don’t just live your life hoping your wildest dreams will become a reality someday. Try first and the rest will work itself out.” In addition to biking for her own passion and curiosity, Holstein also linked her ride to raise 22,000 yuan for the United Foundation for China’s Health.

B.They helped her fix the tire problem.
C.They ignored her and moved forward.
D.They thought themselves too old to help her.
43.What can be inferred from Jennifer Holstein’s words in paragraph 4?
A.She was fond of attending Tibetan weddings.
B.She was a bit annoyed at the wedding’s details.
C.She was forced to take part in the local wedding.
D.She was grateful for such an unexpected opportunity.
44.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Lending a helping hand to the needy.
B.Enjoying the pleasure of cycle journey.
C.Discovering the unknown on a bicycle.
D.Having a unique cultural experience in China.
