Recently, the Jiangsu Football City League (联赛), also called the “Su Chao” has drawn people’s attention. The exciting matches and big crowds have made people think about how successful local football matches can be.
The 13 teams in the league are named after their cities. The players come from all kinds of backgrounds—some are footballers, others are students, cooks, or people who work in offices. If you play well, you get to play—it’s that simple.
In China, people often say “Friendship First, Competition Second.” But in this league, they joke that “Competition First, Friendship 14th.” Why 14th? Because with 13 teams fighting hard, friendship can only come in the 14th place!
Before the match started on May 10th, the host city was worried that people wouldn’t come, so they offered free tickets. But by the time the fourth round began, tickets were already in short supply. With about 25,000 people watching each match, the event now draws crowds as big as professional (职业的) football matches.
The Su Chao isn’t just about good football matches—it needs fun and jokes, too! Every team makes funny jokes about their city’s famous foods and traditions. When Nanjing with its salted ducks faced Wuxi known for honey peaches (桃子), it turned into a “Sweet vs. Salty” food battle that Chinese fans love. Before the game, Wuxi’s team joked, “If we lose, our peaches get salted. If we win, we’ll cover their ducks in sugar!”

D. Only free tickets are offered to people.

In 1962, China set up the Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm and sent 369 foresters, mostly in their 20s, to the area for tree planting.
Ren Zhongyuan, one of the first foresters, still remembers the days when he worked at Saihanba. “Whenever a sandstorm hit, it was like someone was pouring sand from the roof of a house,” he said. Back then, food was hard to get, so they grew their own potatoes and corn. And the house they built themselves often did little to keep out the cold wind.
At the beginning, planting trees on the freezing highland was impossible because of the strong winds. Over 90% of the saplings (树苗) planted in the first two years died. However, the pioneers didn’t give up.
The forest farm welcomed an important development in the spring of 1964. Two hundred people worked hard for 40 days straight. Finally, the efforts paid off. That year, over 90% of the saplings survived.
Over the years, the task of bringing life back to Saihanba has been taken over by the next generations (一代人). “Planting trees is not enough; you need to carefully protect the woods and manage the whole forest farm well,” said Liu Jun, whose parents were the first generation of fire lookouts (监视员). Liu Jun and his wife have protected this forest for more than ten years.
As a third-generation tree planter in Saihanba, Shi Chen now faces the even more difficult challenge of planting saplings on the rocky mountain slopes (斜坡). Every time he stands by the trees his grandfather planted, he feels a connection between the present and the past.
13. What challenge did the first foresters face?
a. Terrible weather. b. Not enough food.
c. Bad living conditions. d. Always less water.
A. a; b; c B. a; c; d C. a; b; d D. b; c; d
14. The underlined word “straight” has a similar meaning with ________.
A. directly B. continuously C. tiredly D. bravely

A. I want to bring life back to Saihanba for the next generation.
B. I will protect the woods and manage the whole forest farm well.
C. I will try to plant more saplings on the Rocky Mountain slopes.
D. I keep on with my grandfather’s career, no matter how hard the work is.
16. Why does the author write the passage?
A. To look back at the difficulties for a better future.
B. To remember what the pioneers did for the country.
C. To tell Saihanba’s history and praise people’s spirit.
D. To spend ten years setting up another Saihanba.

March 21 is World Poetry Day. Poetry is not just a form of cultural expression; it also offers real health benefits.
A new study looked at the effect of Greek poetry on breathing and heart rate (心率). Twenty healthy adults took part in three activities: reading poems aloud, breathing slowly, and breathing naturally. Each activity had three parts: resting for 15 minutes, doing the activity for 20 minutes, and resting again for 15 minutes.
The results showed that reading poems made breathing and heart rate match up the best. This helped lower stress. Breathing slowly was less helpful, and normal breathing was the least effective.

【答案】
例文
Dear Eric,
I’m very pleased to hear from you. I understand your feelings, but talking back may hurt your teachers.
Here is my advice. First, listen carefully and think before you speak. Second, if you disagree, express your ideas politely, such as saying “I have a different idea. Could you explain more?” This shows respect. Finally, remember teachers care about you. Try to control your temper and apologize if you say something hurtful. Good communication with teachers can help you solve problems better and get along well at school.
I believe you can build a better relationship with your teachers. Good luck!
Yours,
Li Hui

11. How does the author explain the fun of the match?
A. By giving an example. B. By asking questions.
C. By telling a story. D. By listing numbers.
12. What can be the best title of the text?

A. directly B. continuously C. tiredly D. bravely
15. Based on his feelings, what decision do you think Shi Chen will make?

Writing poetry is also good for health. A study in the UK asked over 400 people online. More than half said that writing and sharing poetry helped them feel less lonely and worried.
