“I have left to follow my dream of knitting sweaters for penguins in Antarctica (南极洲) and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office... until my penguin friends are happy.” Weeks ago, a teacher in the UK sent this email to her Chinese student, and it soon became popular online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia came up with the idea.
The activity began because of a serious oil spill (石油泄漏) near Phillip Island in the 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins had a serious drop. When little penguins were covered in oil, their lives were put in danger.
To solve this problem, the foundation asked people from all over the world to knit sweaters for penguins. These sweaters could keep them warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil.
Luckily, the idea worked. Soon, there was another oil spill near Phillip Island. This time, the sweaters helped save 96 percent of the penguins in the area.
However, some bird protection groups have questioned if these sweaters might put more stress on penguins. In answer to this, the foundation said that the sweaters are only used for a short time. Once the penguins are better, they no longer wear them.

It was a Saturday morning when I was six years old. Christmas was still three weeks away, but everyone in town was excited because Santa Claus was coming—an uncommon visit to our small Irish town. The main street was lined with cheering children. A band passed by, followed by Santa on a white horse. He laughed and shouted, “Ho! Ho! Ho!” But as he passed me, his beard (胡子) fell off. I realized it was my dad and started crying.
My dad was the most popular person in town. He sang in his school, acted in plays, and even danced on TV. Thirty years later, he visited me in New York City for the first time. At dinner, he became excited when telling me a story from the 1950s.
Back then, Ireland was poor. Dad left school at 16 to work in a factory. His uncle, Ben, returned from New York. He asked my father to go to America, believing he was smart enough to succeed there. But Grandpa disagreed because Dad was the family’s only one making money. He stayed and worked in the same factory for 40 years.

Australian kids made history by sending life-giving algae (藻类) to the International Space Station (ISS). They hoped to create a greener future on Earth. Students from Casula High School cheered loudly at 1:29 pm on November 5, 2024. A SpaceX spaceship successfully lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying two boxes of algae.
The experiment made by students from Casula High School left Earth on the spaceship for a 30-day space task. The students wanted to test if algae can grow faster in space. If their idea is correct, space-grown algae could be used for food, medicine, and biofuels (生物燃料) during space travel—and to improve environments on Earth and Mars.

At that moment, I understood my dad was once young with big dreams. He gave up his dream for his family. What if he had gone to New York? Could he have been a famous singer or actor? Sadly, he never left.
9. The children cheered on the street because ______.
A. New Year was coming B. a singer was performing
C. Santa Claus was visiting the town D. the writer’s dad was riding a horse
10. Which is true about the writer’s father according to the text?

11. The underlined (划线的) word “He” in the text refers to (指代) ______
A. the writer B. Uncle Ben C. Santa Claus D. the writer’s father
12. What does the writer mainly want to express?
A. His joy for his father’s life choice.
B. His regret for his father’s giving up.
C. His pride in his father’s many talents.
D. His worry about the Santa Claus event.

The algae experiment was a chance for students to work with top technology. Lexie Rouen is a teacher from Casula High School. She said students were excited to work on real world experiments that could actually help their future. She added, “Students were amazed because the experiment was far beyond normal classroom projects.”
Over three years, students from Casula High School have met experts like Australia’s first woman astronaut and NASA scientists. They also used high-tech space tools. They worked together on the algae experiment. They did practice tests on Earth to find the best conditions for algae growth before the spaceship was sent.
“We used to say the sky is the limit (极限) for our talented high school students. But they are showing there is no limit to their abilities,” John Graham, a government worker said. “Casula High’s experiment is on the way to the International Space Station. And those students who took part in the experiment could be on their way to a big future.”
13. Why did Australian kids send algae to the ISS?
A. To find a greener way for traveling in space.

D. To test the environment in SpaceX spaceship.
14. What was mentioned about the experiment in Paragraph 2?

15. What did the students think of the experiment?
A. It was easy to carry out. B. It was hard to understand.
C. It was useful for the future. D. It was useless for their learning.
16. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The fun story of the first woman astronaut.
