How do teenagers spend their pocket money? A new report from a Chinese education group tells us the answer.
The report studied 1,500 middle school students in 5 cities, like Beijing and Chengdu. It finds that students spend more and more money on their friends. They often eat out with classmates, buy birthday gifts, or go to the movies together.
Only 30% of students think about the price when buying gifts. Most students just want to make their friends happy. Li Ming, a 14-year-old student in Sichuan, spent 500 yuan on his friend's birthday gift. "My friend gave me an expensive gift last year. If I buy a cheap one, I will lose face," he said.
Li Ming's story is very common among teenagers. Many students ask their parents for more money when they run out of pocket money.
Experts say teenagers should learn to manage their money. First, make a budget (a plan for your money). Second, set a limit for gift spending. Third, learn to tell the difference between what you want and what you need. A handmade card is often better than an expensive gift.
( ) 48. When buying gifts for friends, most students care about ______.
A. how much the gift costs B. whether their friends will like it
C. where the gift is from D. how beautiful the gift looks
( ) 49. From Li Ming's example, we know the main problem is that ______.
A. students are afraid of losing face in front of friends
B. students have too much pocket money
C. students like to show off their money
D. parents don't give enough pocket money
( ) 50. The underlined word "common" in Paragraph 4 probably means "______".
A. Strange B. special C. normal D. difficult
( ) 51. Which of the following is NOT a tip for managing money in the passage?
A. Making a budget B. Setting a spending limit
C. Balancing wants and needs D. Never buying gifts for friends

It was a raining evening in a small town in southern China. A heavy rainstorm hit the mountain road, and a large rock fell onto the highway, blocking half of the road..
Li Wei, a 38-year-old truck driver, was driving home with his 10-year-old daughter after a long day’s work. He was driving slowly on the right lane, when he noticed two cars ahead suddenly disappeared around the curve. Knowing something was wrong, he slowed down and stopped his truck right away.
After getting out of the truck, Li Wei saw the huge rock blocking the road. His truck was only 10 meters away from the danger. “If I had kept driving, we would have hit the rock for sure,” he said later. Li Wei didn’t hesitate. He asked his daughter to stay in the truck and call the police, while he tried to stop the coming cars.
At first, he used his truck’s warning lights and waved his arms, but some drivers didn’t see him in the rain. Two cars almost hit the rock because they were driving too fast. Then Li Wei took out his bright flashlight and stood in the middle of the road, waving and shouting loudly to every car that came by.
Soon, the first car stopped. Then more and more drivers slowed down and stopped. Some drivers even got out to help move small stones away from the road. About 20 minutes later, the police and road workers arrived. They thanked Li Wei for saving so many lives.
“In that moment, I didn’t think about myself. I just wanted to stop as many cars as possible and keep everyone safe,” Li Wei said.

① Learning a new language can sometimes make you feel tired. There are so many words and grammar to remember. However, a great teacher once said, “ ▲ ” So, why not make learning fun? What could be more fun than watching cartoons?
② Watching cartoons is a great way to learn everyday English. Instead of boring textbook sentences, you hear how kids and people really talk. Cartoon characters use simple words, funny jokes and easy slang, which makes English lively and easy to remember.
③ Another good thing is learning expressions you won’t find in textbooks. For example, Mickey Mouse often says “Oh, no!” when he is in trouble, while Peppa Pig loves to say “Daddy Pig, can you help me?” These phrases are short, easy to remember, and fun to use when you talk with others.
④ Cartoons also help you improve your listening skills. You can hear clear pronunciation and learn to understand simple fast speech. And if you don’t know a word, you can use subtitles to help you.
⑤ Of course, this doesn’t mean it’s always easy. For beginners, some cartoons may talk too fast. But language experts say the secret is to watch actively. First, watch a short part with Chinese subtitles. Then, watch it again with English subtitles. Next, try watching without subtitles to see how much you understand. You can start with 5 to 10 minutes each time, write down useful phrases, and use them in your daily life. Next time you watch your favorite English cartoon, you may be surprised by how much you learn!
⑥ Watching cartoons is a happy and useful way to learn English. If you follow the right steps, you can learn better while having fun.
( ) 56. Which of the following can be put into the ▲ ?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. What we learn with joy, we never forget.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. It's never too old to learn.
( ) 57. Why does the writer mention the examples in Paragraph 3?
A. To show that cartoons have useful textbook-free phrases.
B. To introduce two famous cartoon characters.
C. To explain what “Oh, no!” means.
D. To compare two different cartoons.
( ) 58. Which is the best structure of the passage?
A. ①/②③/④⑤/⑥ B. ①/②③④/⑤/⑥
C. ①/②③/④/⑤⑥ D. ①②③/④/⑤/⑥
( ) 59. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

There was a little rabbit named Lina who lived in a warm burrow under a big oak tree. She loved her home, where she kept fresh carrots and soft grass for winter. Every day, she hopped around the forest and played with her friends.
One night, a heavy rainstorm came. The rain poured down and the ground got very wet. All the small animals ran to higher ground, but Lina stayed. “I spent so much time making my burrow nice,” she said, “I won’t leave it!”
The rain got heavier. Soon, water started to fill her burrow. Lina had to run out quickly. She hopped as fast as she could and hid in a hollow tree until the storm stopped.
When the sun came up the next morning, Lina saw her burrow was gone. The rain had washed it away. She felt sad at first, but then she saw the bright sun. “I can build a new, better home!” she decided. She found a higher spot under two strong roots, collected dry grass and soft leaves, and made a new burrow that was safe from rain.
When her friends came back, they were surprised to see her new home. Lina smiled and said, “The storm took my old home, but it didn’t take my courage. Now I know how to build a safer one!”
After that day, Lina was never afraid of storms again.

Many earthquakes happen every year. When they happen in cities, they can be very serious. Many people will be hurt or die in the earthquakes. Knowing some ways to protect yourself will help to keep you safe in the earthquakes.
If you are indoors when the earthquake happens, the safest place is under a strong table or desk. Sitting on the floor in a doorway or close to a wall is safer than standing in the middle of a room. Remember to protect your head and neck with your arms. Stay away from windows, pictures or anything that may fall on you. If you are out of doors, move to clear areas. Get away from buildings and trees.
The danger is not over when the strong shaking stops. There will be some shocks after most earthquakes. We call them aftershocks and they sometimes can be more dangerous than the first earthquake.
When it is safe for you to move around, check the people near you. Some may need help. You may feel afraid, but you should try to stay calm. That is the most important thing to do in the earthquake.
