I worked with Dr. Smith, the one who planned activities for the old. I read their children’s letters to them. Besides, I helped them on special days like Ice Cream Day, Summer Picnic Day and Clown Around Day. I also took the old people for walks or had birthday parties for them.

In the city of Zhengzhou, there is a hotpot (火锅) restaurant, Shengyousheng, is doing something very special. It gives jobs to people who are hearing-impaired — that means they can’t hear well or at all.
The restaurant’s name includes (包括) the words “more” and “sound”. It shows its hope to bring more voices into the world. About half of the workers there have trouble in hearing, including 31-year-old Deng Wei, who works as the kitchen manager. Shengyousheng is a self-service hotpot restaurant. Customers choose their own food and make their own sauces (调味汁), so there’s not much need to talk. This makes it easy for hearing-impaired workers to do their jobs. To help with communication, the restaurant uses big posters on the walls. These posters show simple hand signs, like how to say “thank you” by placing one hand near your chin (下巴) and moving it forward (向前). There are also signs for “food”, “hello”, and “wait for a while”. Next to each picture, there are easy-to-read words, so customers can understand what the hand signs mean. Each table also has cards that customers can use to write to the workers if needed.

In the city of Zhengzhou, there is a hotpot (火锅) restaurant, Shengyousheng, is doing something very special. It gives jobs to people who are hearing-impaired — that means they can’t hear well or at all.

Next to each picture, there are easy-to-read words, so customers can understand what the hand signs mean. Each table also has cards that customers can use to write to the workers if needed.

Useful Shared Stations in Our City
If you walk on the streets of our city in 2026, you will find many new small stations on the sidewalks. 1 They are called “city shared stations” and they bring great convenience to people’s daily life.
2 First, they have free drinking water and disposable cups for passers-by. Second, there are charging ports for mobile phones—both wired and wireless. Third, you can find raincoats, umbrellas and small first-aid kits here for free use.
Last Saturday, I went out to play with my friend. It suddenly rained heavily and we had no umbrella. 3 We used the raincoats from the station and didn’t get wet at all. We were so thankful for this great design.

Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” These are certainly words that millions of volunteers around the world could agree with.
In the US, April is National Volunteer Month, to praise and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, and support to what they care about.
1 People who volunteer spend their time doing things they feel strongly about. For example, animal lovers may volunteer at an animal centre to help improve the treatment of animals.
Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people, try out new skills and explore career choices. 2
Take Andrew Makhoul, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, as an example. Andrew didn’t spend his last spring break relaxing. Instead, the 19-year-old boy decided to do something for people who were less lucky than himself. He travelled to an orphanage (孤儿院) in Guatemala in Central America. 3 And it depends on volunteers to stay open.
Andrew doesn’t speak much Spanish, but he found communication wasn’t a problem, “You communicated with love,” according to an article on his university’s website. And what he gave out, he got back, “ 4 ” Andrew’s first time as a volunteer only lasted a week, but by the end of that week, he knew he’d be back soon—because he saw love and hope.
US author Sherry Anderson once wrote, “ 5 ” And this is perhaps why volunteers all around the world keep doing what they do—their work is “priceless”.

Volunteering is a great way to help others and make the world a warmer place. In our community, a group of high school students started a volunteer activity to help the elderly people.
1 The activity is called “Love for the Elderly”, and it has been going on for six months. Every Sunday morning, the students come to the community’s elderly activity center. 2 Some students help the elderly clean their rooms and wash their clothes. Some talk with them and listen to their stories. Some even teach them how to use smartphones—many elderly people want to learn how to video call their children or use WeChat.
3 Mrs. Wang, an 82-year-old grandma, lives alone. Her children work in other cities, so she often feels lonely. Since the students came, she smiles every day. “They are like my grandchildren. They talk with me and help me do housework. I don’t feel lonely anymore,” she said.
The students also hold small activities for the elderly on some festivals, like the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. 4 They sing songs, dance and play games with the elderly. The elderly people also tell the students stories about the past, which lets the students learn a lot.
5 They say they will keep doing the volunteer activity and invite more students to join in. They hope more people can care about the elderly and help them. Volunteering is not just about helping others; it’s also about growing up and learning the meaning of life.
