The Columbia group, led by Qilong Cheng, designed pleated (walls that can be attached to the outside of conventional buildings. Each section of the pleated wall is angled differently-half facing upward and half downward-and coated with different materials to maximize cooling. A key insight behind the design is that the ground is often significantly hotter than the air in summer. While flat walls can reflect some sunlight, they also absorb heat from the ground. The Columbia team's pleated design addresses this by using a highly reflective mylar film )on downward-facing areas to block ground heat, while the upward-facing sections are coated with a clear silicone polymer(硅酮聚合物)that helps release heat. To test the concept, the researchers built a small-scale model using a pleated frame attached to a plastic wall. They compared its performance against a traditional flat wall over a 24-hour period in New Jersey. On average, the pleated wall was 2.3C cooler, with a peak difference of 3.1C.Computer simulations (indicated that indoor temperatures could also be reduced by about 2.3C,a meaningful improvement for occupant comfort and energy savings. O Newly published research finds that tropical forests can recover up to twice as fast after deforestation with sufficient soil nitrogen ()Scientists from the University of Leeds launched 高二英语试题第5页(共12页) the largest and longest experiment ever designed to examine how nutrients shape forest regrowth in tropical areas cleared for agriculture. They selected 76 forest plots across Central America and monitored them for up to 20 years. Each site differed in age and size, allowing the team to track tree growth and death during forest recovery.Different nutrient treatments were applied to test nutrient roles. Some got nitrogen fertilizer, some phosphorus ()some both, and others none. This allowed direct comparison of forest responses to different soil conditions. The results showed that soil nutrients strongly influence tropical forest regrowth speed: nitrogen-rich forests recovered twice as fast as nitrogen-lacking ones in the first 10 recovery years, while phosphorus alone had no such effect. The findings were published on January 13 in the journal Nature Communications.Lead author Wenguang Tang said,"Our study is inspiring because it suggests there are ways we can boost the storage of greenhouse gases through reforestation by managing the nutrients available to trees." Although nitrogen fertilizer was used in the experiment, the researchers do not recommend fertilizing forests.Widespread fertilizer use could lead to harmful side effects, including polluting rivers and lakes and making the soil too weak for trees to stay healthy.Instead, the team suggests practical alternatives.Forest managers could plant trees from the bean family, which naturally add nitrogen to the soil.Another option is restoring forests in areas that already have sufficient nitrogen due to the effects of air pollution. Tropical forests slow climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and storing it in trees. If young tropical forests worldwide lack nitrogen, they may fail to store about 0.69 billion tonnes of CO2 each year-roughly equal to two years of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas release in the U.K. 28.What is the Leeds experiment targeted at? A.Recovery speed of tropical forests. B.Role of nutrients in forest regrowth. C.Restoration of forests in cleared areas. D.Environmental impact of deforestation 29.What did the experiment find about forest regrowth? A.Nitrogen boosts recovery speed. B.Combined nutrients work better. C.Tropical forests recover naturally. D.Phosphorus aids regrowth indirectly. 高二英语试题第6页(共12页) 30.What can be inferred from the researchers'rccommendation? A.CO2 release should be monitored. B.Bean family trees should be cut down. C.Nitrogen fertilizer should be used widely D.We should turn to nature-based solutions 31.What is the function of the last paragraph? A.To state the ecological significance. B.To put forward practical suggestions. C.To introduce the research background. D.To present specific experiment results. This approach can also save energy. The cooling effect achieved equals 30-67 watts per square meter of the cooling capacity provided by air conditioners. This design serves as an example of how passive cooling can significantly help create a comfortable temperature inside buildings. 32.Why are summer heat and air conditioning mentioned in paragraph 1? A.To highlight the significance of the research. B.To explain the consequence of climate change. C.To introduce a discussion about energy saving D.To get the readers interested in an architectural style 33.What's the function of the downward-facing part of the pleated wall? A.To reflect sunlight into space. B.To protect the outside of the building. C.To absorb the heat inside the building. D.To prevent ground energy heating the wall 34.What's Xiaojie Liu's attitude towards the pleated wall? A.Doubtful. B.Approving. C.Cautious. D.Dismissive. 35.What can be the best title for the text? A.Wall Materials:New Research B.Summer Heat:A Big Problem C.Pleated Walls:Passive Cooling D.Cooling Solutions:Energy Saving 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。 When people want to improve themselves, they usually try to do it directly through deliberate habit building.36 Hobbies are a prime example of how purposeful activities can lead to natural self-improvement.Since better self-discipline is something many people struggle for, this article will focus on how hobbies can deliver that. 37 Take Rot,who joins a Saturday rock-climbing group,as an example. To enjoy the trip,he naturally reduces heavy drinking on Friday nights. In this case, the hobby replaces the unhealthy habit with a fulfilling one. 高二英语试题第8页(共12页) Hobbies can create better routines.Any hobby requiring a new, positive routine will add structure to your life. For instance, having a dog establishes a daily walking habit after supper. In this context, the key point isn't anything to do with walking being healthful. It's that the walking happens at the same time each day.38 Hobbies build tolerance for physical efforts.Sports or intense exercise helps us develop a better sense of what healthy physical efforts feel like.We learn to put up with feelings like increased heart rate without mistaking them for signs that something is wrong.39 Research shows regular exercise relates to better discipline in household chores, spending and study habits. 40 If a hobby makes you see yourself as more responsible, more capable,or more invested in discipline, you're more likely to develop those qualities.Consider hobbies involving leadership or teamwork. They can shift how you see your role in the world and encourage you to act accordingly. Therefore, improving self-discipline doesn't mean forcing yourself into a rigid model. It can be a natural result of finding a hobby you love and allowing it to shape you. A.Hobbies can transform your identity. B.Hobbies make you more capable than others. C.A good hobby can displace negative behaviors. D.Thus, hobbies help teach time management skills. E.This tolerance can also be applied to other areas of life. F.This routine creates a point of organization in your evenings G.However,self-improvement often occurs as a satisfying side effect. 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题:每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 The players on the Academy basketball team knew something was wrong.Their coach, Brendan King, who never 41 them on weekends, urged them back to the gym. They had won the championship the night before, yet now they felt somewhat 42. Panic set in as he remembered the undelivered orders-especially a cup of hot milk tea for Ms.White,a regular customer. His hand trembled as he pressed the voice button, his words laced with sorrow and anxiety as he apologized repeatedly, offering to pay for the undelivered drink. To his great surprise,Ms.White did not respond with anger or complaint, but with gentle kindness.Ms.White told him not to worry and to take his time finding his bike. Her understanding words calmed him,but also deepened his sense of responsibility."She is so kind.I cannot let her down,"he thought. For nearly two hours,he searched every nearby street, but there was no sign of his bike.As night grew darker and the wind bit harder,Jack clenched his fists and made a firm decision. He took out his poor savings, bought a bag of fresh apples and a new cup of hot milk tea, then set off on foot to Ms.White's apartment, several kilometers away. The wind bit into his thin jacket, and his old shoes grew heavy with mud,but the thought of keeping his promise and maintaining his integrity kept him moving forward through the dimly lit urban landscape. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右: 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Finally, breathless,Jack reached Ms.White's doorstep and rang the bell. We could go to the Mexican restaurant around the corner of our street. M: I’d like to try something different this time. W: Then we can go to the Italian restaurant or the French restaurant. M: I prefer the latter. W: It’s fine with me. The restaurant is a bit far. Will we drive or take a taxi there? M: Well, we’ve been a couch potato recently. It’s about a family who lives on a ranch with horses and cattle. W: Why did you watch such a series? It must be very boring. M: Well, it may sound boring to you, but I really love watching it. Though its story is neither exciting nor touching, it tells about the life that I truly want to live. W: You mean you want to live a simple and peaceful life? M: Yes. It made headlines in 1999 when some people arrived there to film the famous Hollywood movie The Beach. Since then, tourists have flooded in this beach with as many as 4,000 visitors arriving on boats every day. W: That’s really hard to believe. M: Yes. Sadly, tourism ruined the natural life there. That is why the Thai government closed the beach to tourists for about four years. W: I didn’t know it was closed for about four years. So when did it reopen? M: It reopened in January, 2022. Now there’s a limit of 300 visitors per day. W: Well, I think it’s a good decision. M: I agree. Scientists there believe that the beach is a natural resource they have to preserve. Actually there’re many other great beaches in Thailand. We don’t have to visit that one. W: You’re right. But I don’t know any other beaches. M: It’s easy. Let’s search for some information on websites and then make a decision. W: Good idea. Text 10 小女孩通过出书为慈善机构筹集资金 W: Ava Milukas is a lovely 8-year-old girl who started to paint when she was 4 years old. She created her first of several books just one year after she started to paint. It contains several chapters, including “Your Home”, “Friends”, “Pets”, and “Places” with the picture she drew on every page, along with her handwritten text. In the “Friends” chapter, she offers this wise advice,“You should always have friends that are caring, helpful and kind.” This soft-cover book is professionally self-published. 100% of the profits are donated to Ava’s choice of two non-profit organizations: A Wish Come True and the Providence Animal Rescue League. She serves as a positive role model for children and a reminder for us adults to recall our early childhood dreams. It’s never too late to try to make our dreams come true and make a difference in the world. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
