C When you first hear about the Dead Sea, it might sound scary, but the truth is quite different. Let’s get closer to the Dead Sea and learn more about it. The Dead Sea is located in southwest Asia. It is about 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide. It sits at about 430 meters below sea level, making it the lowest lake on Earth’s land. What’s interesting is that the Dead Sea isn’t actually a sea. It’s a lake with a salt concentration (含盐度) of more than 30%, which is about eight times saltier than common seawater. This makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth. The Dead Sea stays so salty because of its special natural conditions. Each year, it receives very little rainfall, and only a small amount of fresh water runs into it. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea causes the fresh water to evaporate (蒸发) quickly, which makes the salt concentration even higher. For these reasons, it is also known as the Salt Sea. If you were to swim in the Dead Sea, you wouldn’t see any sea life-- no plants or animals. The high salt concentration makes it impossible for them to live there. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea. However, don’t let the name of not having any sea life scare you. Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can’t swim, you won’t die. The high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea allows anyone to float well, without the need for life buoys (救生圈). In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea every year on vacation. If you walk along the lakeside, you’ll likely see many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines. 8. What do we know about the Dead Sea? A. It is the largest place in Asia. B. It is the widest sea in the world. C. It is the deepest point in America. D. It is the lowest place on Earth’s land. 9. Why do people call it the Dead Sea? A. It is a lake with very high salt concentration. B. No fresh water runs into it and water evaporates fast. C. It is not very safe for people to swim in it. D. No sea animals can stay alive in its water. 10. What does the underlined word “float” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. 下沉 B. 漂浮 C. 潜水 D. 游泳 11. What is the main idea of the text? A. It shares some interesting facts about the Dead Sea. B. It explains why people enjoy visiting the Dead Sea. C. It gives advice on safe swimming in the Dead Sea. D. It encourages people to take a trip to the Dead Sea. D Kindness is necessary and important. As parents and teachers, we teach children to be kind to others from a young age. Research has shown that kindness can not only help us to have a better relationship with others but also make it possible for us to live more happily. According to the Mayo Clinic, when we perform acts of kindness, the pleasure centre in our brain becomes active, giving out the stress-reducing hormone (激素). That’s why volunteers often feel strong satisfaction (满足感) after helping others. And what is even greater is that kindness seldom stops with just one person. People will also be glad to help others after they receive an act of kindness. But can kindness be harmful? Let’s see. As a new team member, you want to be well-liked and respected by your teammates. “Let me know how I can help you; I’m always ready to help.” Though you may truly mean this, there are some people in the world who will see your kindness as a weakness. A year later, you’ll find teammates keep asking for your help, but they only talk to you when they need something, and hardly ever give anything back. In most cases, it is wonderful to be kind to others, and your kind acts will be thanked for and, perhaps, paid off. However, you need to be willing to say “no” when realizing that your plate is already too full. When people ask you for a hand, think it over if you have the time, energy, and attention to give to them. To truly be kind, sometimes you need to be more comfortable saying “no” to others and saying “yes” to yourself. 12. What does the Mayo Clinic think of kindness? A. It does good to our mind. B. It makes us feel more stressed. C. It helps us receive more help. D. It stops people from helping others. 13. What might the new team member in Paragraph 2 feel one year later? A. Thankful. B. Lucky. C. Disappointed. D. Helpful. 14. What does the underlined part “your plate is already too full” in the last paragraph mean? A. You’re too full to eat anything. B. You have too much food. C. You need to ask for a hand. D. You’re really busy and tired. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Never Fail to Offer Your Kindness! B. Be Kind, but Know When to Say No! C. Kindness Is the Most Important Quality! D. Say No to Unkind Requests from Others! 第二节任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分;满分10分) 阅读下面材料,从下面所给的A-E五个选项中选择正确的选项 (其中一项是多余选项),将其序号填入1-4题,并回答第5题。 We may hear of an old saying which says “Health is wealth (财富)”. 【答案】8. D 9. D 10. B 11. A 【解析】 【导语】本文主要介绍了死海的相关情况,包括它的地理位置、特点、含盐度高的原因、被称为死海的缘由以及人们在死海中可以漂浮的特点等有趣事实。 【8题详解】 结合文章第二段“It sits at about 430 meters below sea level, making it the lowest lake on Earth’s land.”,死海位于海平面以下约430米,是地球上陆地上最低的湖泊。 【9题详解】 结合文章第四段“If you were to swim in the Dead Sea, you wouldn’t see any sea life-- no plants or animals. The high salt concentration makes it impossible for them to live there. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea.”,死海里没有任何海洋生物,高含盐度让它们无法在那里生存,这就是它被称为死海的原因。 【10题详解】 结合后文“without the need for life buoys”和“many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines”,不需要救生圈,人们还能在水里看书看杂志,可推断“float”意为“漂浮”。 【11题详解】 通读全文可知,文章围绕死海展开,介绍了它的地理位置、含盐度特点、被称为死海的原因以及人们能在其中漂浮等有趣事实。 D Kindness is necessary and important. 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15.
