After a brief stop in Istanbul, I found myself traveling alone through the Maldives. It was the last stop: Velaa Private Island, a palm-covered (长满棕榈树的) dot of sand in the middle of the impossibly blue Indian ocean.
The thing everybody knows about the Maldives is the over-water bungalows (平房). They are just as gorgeous as they look in photos — fantastic in design and breathtaking in view. My room had a wall of windows that opened onto a private deck (露台), overlooking the ocean, the calm and blue sea stretching into the horizon (地平线).
One of the underrated joys of traveling alone is doing exactly what you want, whenever you want. I am absolutely one of those people who can sit and “do nothing “ on vacation for a week, supposing I have a comfortable chair and a good book — or seven. But this dreamlike place has a way of drawing you outside. I decided to try a Jet Ski trip. The scenery was picturesque, with dolphins and rainbows and water so blue it looked digitally edited.
Ocean life is a highlight of a trip to the Maldives, and many of the eco-friendlier resorts have strong preservation programs. Remote Lands can set up a custom experience that includes sea turtle rehabilitation and manta ray research with a biologist. There are plenty of ways to feel like an explorer, not just a guest.
One of the most surprising highlights of the trip was an encounter with a doctor visiting from India. We talked about my energy, my sleep, my digestion, and the cycles of stress I’d been stuck in. He offered insights into how those things were showing up in my body and gave me small but thoughtful recommendations for rebalancing.
I didn’t leave the Maldives with a suitcase full of souvenirs, but with something far more lasting — a sense of calm I hadn’t felt in years. Sometimes, the best journeys don’t take you to new places — they bring you back to yourself.
4. What does the underlined word “gorgeous “ in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Deeply private. B. Extremely beautiful.

A. Enjoying a Jet Ski trip.
B. Reading a total of seven books.

D. Staying completely indoors for relaxation.
6. What does the author say about eco-friendly resorts?
A. They avoid contact with wildlife.
B. They focus on recycling programs.
C. They offer guests chances to do research.
D. They provide experimental sites for researchers.
7. What lasting impact did the trip have on the author?
A. She became friends with a doctor.
B. She learned how to travel more efficiently.
C. She returned home with a deep sense of calm.
D. She discovered her love for a healthy lifestyle.

What comes to mind when you hear the term “classical music”? For some, it’s just relaxing background music; for others, it touches something deep within their hearts. In fact, classical music is full of layers and surprises, so there are countless ways to enjoy it. As a music teacher, I encourage everyone to try “conscious listening” — paying full attention to uncover the fun and creativity hidden in the music.
The first step to a conscious listening experience is learning mindfulness: being fully attentive in the moment. Mindfulness is more than letting the sound wash over us; it’s about opening up to the big picture with a nonjudgmental mind, which in the long term enhances our capacity for complex concepts and problem-solving, leading to better judgment and decisions.
Finding mindfulness in daily life is not always easy. An audience member whispering or flipping pages from a booklet during a live performance can throw the musicians off and frustrate others. Noise pollution and social media also create disturbance to our listening powers that can threaten our health, gradually increasing our anxiety and emotional disconnection.
Breathwork is one of the most common methods of developing mindfulness. A better way to ease in is to first engage emotionally with rich music. Then, allow the flow of energy to lead to tension and release, creating expectation and then fulfilling it, naturally causing inhales (吸气) and exhales after multiple listens. This is exactly what listening to musical harmony (和声) does. Research shows that music pleasure emerges from the interaction between our expectation of upcoming sound through our reward system and the actual pleasing sound itself.
Forget easygoing simple background music. Try following the multiple voices in J. S. Bach’s compositions that inspire mental calm and clarity through their interactions. Or sense the emotional tension and release patterns in the harmonies of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Classical music demands a higher level of awareness and offers richer rewards. Then, the surrounding noise melts away.
Listening to music can feel like having a companion on a journey who is guiding you through each moment of mindfulness. It is easier to become mindful when focusing on the flow of the music instead of seeking absolute quiet.
8. How does long-term mindfulness practice benefit listeners?
A. By enhancing relaxation effects. B. By improving social interaction.
C. By increasing musical appreciation. D. By strengthening advanced reasoning skills.
9. What major challenge to mindful listening is highlighted in paragraph 3?
A. A critic mentality about music. B. The capacity for complex concepts.
C. Performers inappropriate behaviors. D. Distractions from noise and technology.
10. Why does the author recommend Bach and Rachmaninoff’s works?
A. They are universally considered easygoing music.
B. Their works are the most accessible for beginners.
C. They represent the most technically demanding pieces.
D. Their compositions best demonstrate emotional patterns.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To enable music listeners to engage deeply. B. To highlight the advantages of mindfulness.
C. To convey personal views on classical music. D. To introduce a new method for concentration.
D
You might be leaving some happiness on the table by doing your everyday activities all by yourself. Happiness, it seems, is not just a state of mind — it’s a shared enterprise. A new study has found that almost any activity, from the ordinary to the profound, becomes more enjoyable when done with others. Whether pumping gas, or cooking dinner, the company of another person appears to make life’s routines a little brighter.
The study, published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, drew on data from more than 40,000 Americans who collectively reported over 100,000 daily activities. “Participants consistently rate every common daily activity as more enjoyable when they’re interacting with somebody else,” said Elizabeth Dunn, the study’s senior author. Even seasoned experts on social behavior were taken aback by the consistency of the findings. “I was surprised by the extent and extremity of the effects,” admitted Nicholas Epley, a behavioral scientist who was not involved in the research.
Unsurprisingly, the biggest boosts were linked to activities already social by nature — eating, drinking, walking, running, and playing games. Yet even solitary (独自的) pursuits such as reading, or crafting also saw a happiness bump when shared. While in-person interactions provided the strongest benefits, even phone calls produced measurable mood improvements. Dunn notes that if it can’t be in-person, having some element of voice seems to be important.
The study did not include personality data, leaving unanswered how individual characteristics might influence outcomes. Previous studies, however, suggest that social connection reliably enhances wellbeing across personality types. Researchers identify “undersociality” — the tendency to underestimate how warmly others will respond to social initiatives — as a primary barrier to seeking connection.
The practical implications are clear; we should intentionally create more opportunities for social engagement. Simple strategies such as working alongside friends at coffee shops or conversing by phone while completing chores can transform ordinary activities into sources of joy. Ultimately, the research convincingly demonstrates that happiness arises not merely from what we do, but fundamentally from who we do it with.
12. How was the research mainly conducted?
A. By analyzing massive activity reports. B. By conducting laboratory experiments.
C. By comparing different personality types. D. By interviewing experts in social behavior.
13. What did the study find about social interactions?
A. They require face-to-face communication. B. Their effects vary greatly among individuals.
C. They enhance enjoyment of various activities. D. They bring greater joy in independent activities.
14. Why does the author mention previous studies in paragraph 4?
A. To stress the limitation of the new study. B. To introduce a different research method.
C. To provide supporting evidence for a claim. D. To question the findings of the new study.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Alone or Together: A Social Dilemma. B. Social Activities: Relationship Builder.
C. Personality Differences: A Factor in Social Joy. D. Shared Moments: The Social Key to Happiness.

As a student of Chinese language and culture, I was introduced to many fascinating aspects of the country’s culinary (烹饪的) heritage. One dish that particularly stood out in my studies was Crossing Brıdge Rice Noodles, a specialty from Yunnan Province. In 2024, when I traveled to Yunnan, I finally experienced this famous dish firsthand. ___16___
Walking into a traditional Yunnan restaurant and settling down, I felt anticipation that only a long-awaited experience can bring. ___17___ Each ingredient was presented separately, allowing me to assemble my bowl according to my preference. The waiter placed a large bowl of hot broth (肉汤) in front of me, followed by thinly sliced meats, fresh vegetables, quail eggs, tofu skin, and herbs. Then, the most exciting part came: white, smooth, and silky rice noodles.
Following the traditional method, I first added the raw meat slices into the hot broth, watching them cook instantly. Then, I added the vegetables, tofu and eggs, letting them blend into the broth. ___18___ As I lifted the noodles with my chopsticks, their delicate texture was evident — soft, yet firm enough to hold their shape.
___19___ The broth, made from slow-simmered chicken and pork bones, was rich and deeply comforting. The rice noodles were incredibly smooth, almost jellylike, yet with a satisfying chewiness. The combination of fresh ingredients created a balance of textures — tender meat, crisp vegetables, and silky noodles, all coming together harmoniously.
Trying the dish in Yunnan was an experience that connected me to China’s rich culinary heritage and reaffirmed (再次确定) the deep bond between food and culture. This dish, with its rich broth, silky noodles, and heartwarming service, is a representation of the beauty of Chinese cuisine. ___20___
A. The first bite was an explosion of flavors.
B. The dish was served in a traditional manner.
C. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary.
D. While studying in Beijing, I often heard about the dish.
E. Finally, I carefully placed the rice noodles into the bowl.
F. What amazed me the most was how familiar the flavors felt.
G. And now, it holds a special place in my personal journey as well.

“I can do this,” I thought to myself, looking at the math test paper with the disappointing result 65. In junior high, I had been among the top students, and math was my strongest subject. I never struggled with it, and I even got full marks on some tests.
But now, as a first-year high school student at this famous school, the first math exam made me sad. The numbers on the paper seemed to laugh at me. That evening, I pushed the test paper into the bottom of my schoolbag, fearing my parents’ disappointment. In the following days, the bad feeling was always around me. I avoided the teacher’s eyes in class and buried myself in note-taking. The more I struggled alone with math, the more difficult the questions seemed.
One rainy afternoon, as I sat alone in the canteen, my math teacher, Mr. Lin, appeared. “Mind if I join you?” he asked calmly. My heart sank, ready for criticism (批评). Instead, he said, “I’ve noticed you work very hard. But sometimes, the way we learn needs to change when we come into a new stage.” He took out a small notebook across the table. “My senior-year notes,” he smiled. “I wasn’t always good at math either.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为80个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Holding the notebook, I felt confident again.

【答案】The Beauty of Xiamen
If you are about to pay a visit to Xiamen, I recommend the scenic spots of Kulangsu in Xiamen.
You must know Zheng Chenggong, who was a great navigator in the history of China. The statue of Zheng Chenggong stands at the Fuding Rock on the southeastern tip of Kulangsu, which looks like a man facing the magnificent sea, wearing armor and holding his sword in his hand. His image is strong and imposing. Apart from this beautiful scenery, a unique local snack street there also attracts visitors from all around the world. If I were you, I would go to the night market where not only can you experience local eating habit but also you can taste many street foods.
There are many places worth visiting in Kulangsu. I hope my recommendation will make you want to pay a visit here.

【答案】
Holding the notebook, I felt confident again. As I opened the notebook that Mr. Lin had given me, I found that it was filled with detailed explanations and examples which helped me understand the concepts better. I realized that what I needed was not just hard work, but also the right approach to learning. What Mr. Lin said, which was that sometimes we need to change our learning methods when entering a new stage, really encouraged me. From then on, I began to try new methods and actively solve difficult problems. Gradually, I made progress in math and regained my love for the subject.
