(Text 2)

(Text 6)
M: Sorry to interrupt, but would you mind switching seats with me? I’d like to sit next to my wife.
W: I’m sorry, but I specifically chose this seat during booking.
M: I understand, but it would mean a lot to us. It’s our wedding trip.
W: I’d really like to help, but I have a medical condition and need easy access to the restroom.
M: My seat is just a few rows back. It’s actually closer to the restroom on the other side.
W: Oh, in that case, sure.
(Text 7)
M: Excuse me. I got here at eleven thirty and it’s already twelve ten. I feel I’m being ignored.
W: I’m really sorry about the wait, sir. We’re seating people as tables become available.
M: But I just noticed that several customers after me had already been shown to their seats. Can you explain why?
W: Oh, they are a group and we happen to have a spare large table. I’ll check with my fellow staff and make sure you’re next in line. Please allow me a few more minutes.
M: Thank you.
(Text 8)
M: Hi, Lisa. Any plan for the weekend?
W: Nothing yet. Any ideas?
M: The city gallery is hosting a range of exhibitions, including calligraphy, painting, sculpture and so on.
W: I am a fan of painting. What is the theme of the painting exhibition?
M: Let me check it on my phone. Oh, they’ve got a special Monet exhibition featuring rarely shown Water Lily series. They even created a virtual garden bridge in the center of the hall. Would you like to go with me this Saturday afternoon?
W: I’d love to. How do we get there?
M: I’ll take the underground to Elm Street Station. It’s just two stops from my place. We can meet at the bookshop on Elm Street at three thirty. It’s just a five - minute walk from the gallery.
W: That’s perfect. I can take Bus No. 5 and get there in fifteen minutes.
(Text 9)

W: Yes. We always try to do quality work. Now, tell me about yourself.
M: I completed a master’s degree in environmental biology and got a job in the field. But I soon realized I wasn’t cut out for the job and decided to take the path of a software developer.
W: So what led you to make such a career shift?
M: I’ve had a great enthusiasm for computer programming since an early age. I took online courses and obtained a few official software certificates. Luckily, I landed a job at an international company, Soft Solutions, where I have already worked for two years.
W: Well. Why do you want to leave that job?
M: I’m looking for a company where I can contribute and develop more. I’ve researched your recent projects and I’m impressed by your latest developing system.
W: You’ve done your homework. Thanks for your time and we will give you a call tomorrow.
(Text 10)
M: Welcome to Sports World. Today I’d like to introduce a sport to you all, golf. In many countries, golf is a sport for the rich, but not in Scotland. You can see all sorts of people participating, including rubbish collectors, business people and celebrities. This means that anyone can play and it doesn’t depend on your bank balance or how famous you are.
The game itself was invented by farmers and has always been hugely popular and addictive. In fact, King James Ⅱ, once banned it because his soldiers were playing golf instead of training for war.
Golf is a serious game that has been around for about five hundred years, and respecting traditions is central to playing it. Even these days golf remains a very decent game. It is very important to be respectful towards your fellow players and towards the course itself. In fact, most golfers carry little forks to repair damage to the course. And heated discussions have been known to take place in golf clubs concerning the rules of golf and how to interpret them.

One possible version:
Just then, the headmaster appeared at the door, holding a black smartphone. “Mr. Wells,” he said with a warm smile, “I believe this is yours.” Mr. Wells checked his pockets and asked in surprise, “How did you get it?” The headmaster then explained how Sally had found the phone near the school gate, and finally sent it to his office just before the bell rang. “I tried to call you, and then the phone on my desk rang.”
Realizing what had happened, Mr. Wells stood there in silence for a few seconds. It seemed that he was searching for proper words. Then he turned to Sally and said, “Sally, I'm really proud of you. I know it was not an easy choice for you to wait at the gate. I'm sorry I did not give you a chance to explain. I still plan to call your parents later. I will tell them not only about your effort to be punctual, but also your honesty and good heart.”

Fendouzhe is a full-ocean-depth submersible. During the sea trial, it reached a depth of 10,909 meters at the bottom of the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench in November, 2020. The Challenger Deep is the deepest known point on Earth.
In December 2024, it successfully concluded a groundbreaking dive to the Puysegur Trench. The mission, which involved 68 scientists from eight countries, including New Zealand, Malaysia, Denmark, Germany, France, Brazil, India, and China, marked the first international scientific dive exploration of the trench. Despite extreme sea conditions, the team completed 32 dives, setting a new Chinese record of 75 hours across 5 dives.
This joint mission follows the first manned deep-sea scientific voyage by Chinese and New Zealand scientists in late 2022, which explored the Scholl Deep, the deepest point of the Kermadec Trench, located north of New Zealand, approximately 10,000 meters below sea level.

Each year during the Dawson City Music Festival, everybody’s mind is on one thing: singing. For three days (July 19-21 this year), Dawson, which is about 150 miles south of the Arctic Circle, turns into a music box. I come to the city to hear the songs of the Tr’ondêk Hwëch’in, who lived here for centuries before more than 100,000 people arrived in 1899 to dig in the dirt for shiny rocks during the so-called “Klondike Gold Rush”.
I first stop in front of the main stage in a huge tent. There’re plenty of benches inside the tent and plenty of room on the grass in the back for girls with hula hoops (呼啦圈) and little kids learning to dance.
The tent is only one of the festival’s five official sites, but really, any room big enough for a couple of people is bound to have at least one of them playing an instrument. And with the midnight sun shining, the music never stops.
I stay there and watch a supergroup of five guitar players playing a Neil Young song for over an hour in the main tent before they go over to the Grand Theatre to compete with a violin player.
The Grand Theatre, which was built in the high days of the Klondike Gold Rush, has been a showcase for Yukon music as well as international acts since 1975. Over the years, everybody from Bruce Cockburn to Buffy Sainte-Marie to Barenaked Ladies has shown up. This summer, the headliner will be Bonnie Billy, who mixes rock, punk, traditional Appalachian sounds, and brutal honesty with something all his own.
And I have no idea who the woman performing on the stage is, but her music flows like a roller coaster thanks to the Grand Theatre’s fantastic sound effects. And when she’s done, I clap my fingernails off.
24. Why did so many people come to Dawson in 1899?
A. To search for gold. B. To attend the festival.
C. To settle down here. D. To collect unique shells.
25. Who will be starred at the festival this summer?
A. Barenaked Ladies. B. Bonnie Billy.
C. Buffy Sainte-Marie. D. Bruce Cockburn.
26. What does the author think of the woman’s performance at the Grand Theatre?
A. Loud. B. Strange. C. Boring. D. Beautiful.
27. Which of the following best describes the music festival?
A. It was first celebrated in 1975.
B. All performers are local musicians.
C. It goes round the clock for three days.
D. Performances are just allowed at five sites.
C
Flowers will do anything to attract the attention of insects that help them reproduce. That means spending precious energy on bright colors, unique smells and appealing patterns. Now, a team of researchers led by Daniel Robert have just uncovered a whole new element that contributes to flowers’ attraction: their distinct electric field.
That’s right — electric field. It turns out that flowers can produce a slight negative charge relative to the air around them. Bees have a charge, too.
“When a bee is flying through the air, the friction of the air and the friction of the body parts on one another causes the bee to become positively charged,” explains Daniel Robert. “When a positively charged bee lands on a flower, the negatively charged pollen (花粉) naturally sticks to it.”
The team wondered if bees were aware of this electric interaction. So, the researchers designed an experiment. They built a small tent full of artificial flowers. Each flower was simple — a stick with a small steel dish at the top. Half of the “flowers” held delicious sugar water. The other half held quinine, a substance that is bitter and disgusting.
When the bees explored these false flowers, they moved around randomly. They landed on sweet flowers just about as often as bitter flowers. But when the sweet flowers carried a small charge, the bees learned pretty quickly to choose the charged flowers. And when the electric charge was removed? They went back to their random landing.
“But that’s not all,” Daniel Robert says. “We found that the electric field just occurred in some plants. And once the bee left, the field stayed for 100 seconds or so. That’s long enough for the electric field to serve as a guide for the next bee that might fly by.”
28. What does Daniel Robert’s team discover about bees?
A. They dislike bitter flowers. B. They are very sensitive to colors.
C. They are positively charged. D. They can recognize different patterns.
29. What does the underlined word “disgusting” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Bright. B. Unpleasant. C. Dry. D. Hard.
30. What does Daniel Robert suggest about the flower’s electric field?
A. It is caused by the friction with the air.
B. It can’t be detected by other insects.
C. It disappears as soon as the bee leaves.
D. It can be switched on and off by the plant.
31. In which section of a newspaper may this text most probably appear?
A. Science. B. Technology. C. Environment. D. Agriculture.

Criticizing teenage girls for the way they speak is nothing new. But Gretchen McCulloch has a bone to pick with those critics. She argues that the female teens should be praised for their long-time language innovation.
“William Shakespeare has long been seen as the poster boy for introducing new words into the English language,” she declares. “But young women may have been linguistic revolutionaries of Shakespeare’s day, too. To use a modern metaphor, they are the Uber of language.”
McCulloch notes that in the 2003 book Historical Sociolinguistics, University of Helsinki linguists Terttu Nevalainen and Helena Raumolin-Brunberg surveyed 6,000 letters from 1417 to 1681. They found that female letter-writers changed the way they wrote faster than male letter-writers, and that they helped the adoption of new words and abandoning words like “doth” and “maketh”.
“Their studies even showed that women are consistently responsible for about 90 percent of linguistic changes today,” adds McCulloch.
Why do women lead the way with language innovation? Linguists aren’t really sure. But McCulloch argues that women may have greater social awareness, bigger social networks, or even a gift for that.
“A 2009 study estimated that when it comes to changing language patterns, men fall behind women about a generation,” notes McCulloch. “’That’s largely due to the fact that females have traditionally taken care of children,’ as Chi Luu wrote for JSTOR Daily in February. ‘Thus, men learn from their mothers, and women tend to learn new words from other women.’”
Though Gretchen McCulloch might never be able to silence all those critics, she has made a good argument that women have been revolutionizing language for a long time. It is not bad for a group of kids that get lots of criticism for adopting new words faster.
32. Why is Shakespeare called “the poster boy”?
A. To show doubt about his talent.
B. To highlight his family background.
C. To describe his role more vividly.
D. To tell how he learned the new words.
33. What does the author feel about Gretchen McCulloch’s conclusion?
A. Convinced. B. Confused. C. Disturbed. D. Unconcerned.
34. What is the best title for the text?
A. Experts Say Shakespeare Is Not a Language Innovator at All
B. Teenage Girls Have Led Language Innovation for a Long Time
C. Increasing Evidence Shows Men Fall Behind in Language Innovation
D. It’s Time That We Stop Criticizing Teenagers for the Way They Speak
35. How does Gretchen McCulloch mainly support her argument?
A. By conducting surveys. B. By analyzing ancient texts.
C. By interviewing experts. D. By citing published studies.

“How do you save money on groceries?” We sent this question to our audience and received various money-saving tips from them. Here’s a selection of their responses.
36
If you must visit multiple stores, make sure they are close to your home or else the gas expense will eat away at the money saved at the stores.
Buy inexpensive cuts of meat
If your dish is going to cook for a long time, the cut of meat may be unimportant. So buy the least expensive one in the store. 37 . But add an extra 40 minutes and it will turn out great.
Make your own bread
Learn how to make bread. 38 : About $8 worth of ingredients makes about eight to ten loaves of basic bread and it doesn’t have preservatives.
Cook creatively
Instead of planning a meal and then buying overpriced ingredients, try to do the opposite: 39 . If ground beef is on sale, make fried burgers or hamburger steak. In addition, have a few meal options that include a variety of flavors and different cooking methods. You probably wouldn’t want to eat deep-fried food three days in a row.
Get a little help from AI
I recently started using ChatGPT to help use up food in the kitchen. For example, this weekend, I had a tomato, half an onion, a half dozen sweet potatoes and leftover roasted chicken in the fridge. I told ChatGPT I wanted to make something for breakfast and dinner using these ingredients. 40 .

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The significance of the renewables revolution in China is almost too vast for the human mind to grasp. By the end of last year, the country 56 (reach) 887 gigawatts of solar-power capacity — close to double Europe’s and America’s combined total. Thanks to this capacity, China has exceeded, 57 is on course to exceed, most of the commitments it has made under the Paris Agreement since it signed it ten years ago.
More 58 (important), China is exporting its revolution to the rest of the world. America’s current government rejects renewable 59 (technology). In Europe, voters oppose expensive green policies. So it is in developing countries that the fight against climate change will be won or lost, and it is there that China’s renewables will make the most difference by providing ever greater amounts of clean-energy capacity at prices 60 are lower than any alternative, including coal and natural gas. If you doubt 61 appeal, count those solar panels on Pakistani roofs.
And the benefits could be enormous. Although the 62 (possible) of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions so dramatically as to limit the increase in global temperatures to just 1.5°C is likely to fail, solar and wind offer the best hope of 63 (limit) further rises. And even if climate change is not the priority, we should be excited at the prospect of cheap, clean energy and its promise 64 (improve) billions of lives in developing countries. In short, the world needs 65 China has to offer. And it should take it.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sally was a bright and hardworking student, but she had a bad habit: She often arrived late at school, much to the annoyance of her teachers.
One morning, Sally entered her English class long after the bell had rung. Mr. Wells, her teacher, warned her that if she were late again the following day, he would have to call her father. Sally, knowing that her strict parents would be deeply disappointed, promised to be on time.
Having made up her mind to keep her word, Sally went to bed early that night and woke up at dawn. She dressed quickly, grabbed her schoolbag, and hurried out without even eating breakfast. When she reached school, the grounds were still quiet. When the morning bell rang, she was already seated at her desk, being pleased with herself.
To her surprise, however, it was not Mr. Wells who walked into the classroom, but Miss Jones. Sally soon learned that Mr. Wells was away on a business trip. Although disappointed, Sally made up her mind to stick to her new routine.
The next morning, Sally woke up even earlier. However, as she approached the school gate, something on the ground caught her attention: a black smartphone. She picked it up and decided to wait for the owner. When no one showed up to claim it, she hurried to the headmaster’s office to hand it in before rushing to class. As she reached the classroom, Mr. Wells, who had returned from his trip, had already begun the lesson.
“You have broken your promise once again!” Mr. Wells said sharply.
Sally tried to explain, but Mr. Wells cut her off and said, “I don’t want to hear your excuses. I’ll talk to your parents later.”
