For any nine-year-old, being crowned Queensland’s under-10 singles and doubles tennis champion in the same week would likely be the greatest achievement of their young life. But Chase Hoogsteden has already achieved more than a lot of kids of his age for Chase was beating leukaemia (白血病).
Proud mum Tatum Hoogsteden said her family could never have imagined Chase competing again, let alone so soon after his battle against deadly blood cancer. “He works hard and he’s brave and strong-willed. He just gets on with life and gets the job done so we’re super proud of him.”
Five years ago, Chase became very ill after he was diagnosed with leukaemia. For the next 30 months, the Saint Stephen’s College student endured a brave battle against the cancer that left him so weak that he had to stay in bed. “He had to teach himself how to walk again. Now he wins cross-country competitions and tennis tournaments.”
Every 12 weeks, Chase has to go back to hospital for further blood testing because there is a 10 per cent chance that his leukaemia might return. “You just had to tell him what was happening and he’d go. OK, he’d given himself some time to sort it out in his head; then say, ‘I’m ready, go.’”
That bravery throughout Chase’s leukaemia fight has shone through into his tennis. The nine-year-old plays without fear, charging around the court like he knows how precious every second is spent with a racquet (球拍) in his hand. “Even when Chase was in the hospital bed unable to walk, we got video footage of him hitting tennis balls with his racquet.”
Chase won the Queensland final 6-3, 6-0 against a player who had beaten him two weeks earlier. “Rafa Nadal is his idol (偶像) and he wants to be just like him. He wants to travel the world with his brother Hudson; they want to do it together. He wants to win all the Grand Slams.”
24. Why was Chase’s success in tennis extraordinary?
A. He won two titles in a week. B. He was battling with leukaemia.
C. He trained harder than other athletes. D. He beat an older, stronger competitor.
25. What does the underlined word “endured” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Forgot. B. Avoided. C. Reminded. D. Waged.
26. What does Chase’s behavior in hospital show?
A. He dislikes treatment. B. He is fond of tennis.
C. He loves watching videos. D. He misses his family.
27. What can we know about Chase from the last paragraph?
A. He has great confidence in his sport. B. He longs to get on well with his brother.
C. He aims to tour globally alongside Nadal. D. He is going to travel globally with his family.

From 1990 to 2020, the world became hotter and most land areas became drier. According to a United Nations report, dry regions have expanded by an area almost three times the size of India. Climate changes affect rainfall patterns, increasing rain in some places but decreasing it in others. This creates problems for agriculture, as plants suited to one climate may not survive in changing conditions.
The situation is serious, with 77.6 percent of Earth’s land area being drier in 2020 than thirty years earlier. The UN Convention to Combat Desertification reports that over 40 percent of Earth’s land, not counting Antarctica, is now classified as dry land. This doesn’t always mean desert, but includes areas where water evaporates (蒸发) faster than rainfall can replace it.
The human impact is significant, with 2.3 billion people now living in dry lands, up from 1.2 billion in 1990. By 2100, this number could reach 5 billion. Many people are trying to leave increasingly dry areas, but other countries are not making it easy for them to move. The report shows that some semi-dry areas are becoming arid (干旱), and arid areas are becoming extremely dry.
There are several causes for this drying trend. Besides greenhouse gases trapping heat, cutting down forests reduces rainfall because trees release water vapor that helps form rain clouds. Using too much groundwater for farming both results from and contributes to increased dryness. The effects are worst for poor countries, with Africa particularly affected. By 2040, the world could lose 60 million tons of major food crops yearly.
While the report describes these serious problems, it also suggests solutions, including better ways to collect and use water, restoring damaged land, and building stronger communities. However, as Nichole Barger from UNCCD says, “The question is not whether we have the tools to respond — it is whether we have the will to act.” Most solutions require countries to work together, which has proven difficult.
28. Why is India mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce a UN report.
B. To show India’s dry weather.
C. To explain agriculture problems.
D. To help readers know the scale of dry regions.
29. Which is NOT a cause of the global drying trend?
A. Greenhouse gases. B. Deforestation.
C. Overuse of groundwater. D. The growth of poor countries.
30. What is the most important now according to Nichole Barger?
A. Practical solutions. B. Professional tools.
C. The determination to act. D. Funding and technology.
31. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Global Food Shortage B. Earth Is Getting Drier
C. Tech-driven Sand Control D. Drought-Tolerant Plant Cultivation
D
A small cut could cause infection 100 years ago, yet since the mid-20th century we have had antibiotics (抗生素) such as penicillin to fight disease-causing bacteria (细菌). But over time, the bacteria have developed ways to become less responsive to treatment.
This growing resistance to antibiotics poses a threat to global health. The strength of antibiotics is weakening as many types of bacteria become immune (免疫的) to the drugs we use. One recent forecast estimates that by 2050, 39 million people worldwide could die as a direct consequence of not finding new and efficient weapons against bacteria.
But there is good news as well: US researchers have found a promising place we could look for the antibiotics of the future: inside our own bodies. “Our discovery emphasizes the human microbiome (微生物组) as a previously unexplored source of antibiotics,” Cesar de la Fuente tells Science Illustrated. His team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania’s Machine Biology Group examined collections of gut microbes (肠道微生物) from 1773 people, using AI to screen thousands of proteins.
In this way, they found hundreds of possible substances that, according to Cesar de la Fuente, could be the antibiotics of the future. “One of our promising candidates — prevotellin-2, taken from the gut microbe Prevotella copri — showed efficiency in animal models,” says Cesar de la Fuente.
According to the research, which was published in the journal Cell, the wealth of candidates found in the gut may be due to a particularly highly competitive environment in that part of the body. “To survive, bacteria must have produced some special substances that will kill other bacteria,” says Cesar de la Fuente. In a study, the researchers found the special substances produced by some bacteria can either make their competing bacteria die, or affect their important activities, causing them to stop working and die.
32. What is the main problem mentioned in the text?
A. Treatment is often delayed and weak. B. Existing antibiotics cause side effects.
C. Bacteria are growing more resistant. D. Disease-causing bacteria are increasing.
33. What can we learn about the antibiotics of the future?
A. They will be created by AI systems.
B. They may come from the human microbiome.
C. They can stop different bacterial competitions.
D. They’ll solve the problem of antibiotic resistance by 2050.
34. What can be inferred about prevotellin-2 from the text?
A. It has cured many patients. B. It has replaced existing antibiotics.
C. It is a widely-used antibiotic now. D. It proves effective in animal models.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The method of testing new antibiotic drugs. B. The importance of antibiotics for global health.
C. The cause of the gut’s rich antibiotic candidates. D. The role of diet in producing antibacterial substances.
When people want to improve themselves, they usually try to do it directly through deliberate habit building. ____36____ Hobbies are a prime example of how purposeful activities can lead to natural self-improvement. Since better self-discipline is something many people struggle for, this article will focus on how hobbies can deliver that.
A good hobby can displace negative behaviors. Take Rob, who joins a Saturday rock-climbing group, as an example. To enjoy the trip, he naturally reduces heavy drinking on Friday nights. ____37____
Hobbies can create better routines. Any hobby requiring a new, positive routine will add structure to your life. For instance, having a dog establishes a daily walking habit. In this context, the key point isn’t anything to do with walking being healthful. It’s that the walking happens at the same time each day. ____38____
Hobbies build tolerance for physical efforts. Sports or intense exercise helps us develop a better sense of what healthy physical efforts feel like. We learn to put up with feelings like increased heart rate without mistaking them for signs that something is wrong. ____39____ Research shows regular exercise relates to better discipline in household chores, spending and study habits.
____40____ If a hobby makes you see yourself as more responsible, more capable, or more invested in discipline, you're more likely to develop those qualities. Consider hobbies involving leadership or teamwork. They can shift how you see your role in the world and encourage you to act accordingly.
Therefore, improving self-discipline doesn't mean forcing yourself into a rigid model. It can be a natural result of finding a hobby you love and allowing it to shape you.
A. Hobbies can transform your identity.
B. Hobbies make you more capable than others.
C. Thus, hobbies help teach time management skills.
D. This tolerance can also be applied to other areas of life.
E. This routine creates a point of organization in your evenings.
F. However, self-improvement often occurs as a satisfying side effect.
G. In this case, the hobby replaces the unhealthy habit with a fulfilling one.

It was a typical Tuesday in early autumn. At 6 am, Emma and I jumped out of bed, excited for the history museum trip — yet worried about the unfinished history project due on Wednesday. After a quick breakfast, we ran to school, backpacks bouncing, the project weighing on our minds.
The bus ride was joyful with jokes flying, Emma sang pop songs, and for a while, we forgot the project. At the museum, the grand stone building drew us in. The first exhibit, Roman coins, made us gather closely, the guide’s tales of empires pulling us into history. A brief thought: Could these stories help the project? But we pushed it aside. By noon, hunger hit. We discussed which was cooler; ancient pottery or medieval armor while eating in the cafeteria, and the project stayed fresh in our minds. — “We’ll deal with it later,” we lied to ourselves.
The afternoon brought more exploration. We wandered into a dimly lit room filled with Egyptian relics. The hieroglyphics (象形文字) on the walls seemed to whisper secrets, and Emma pretended to figure out what they meant, making up funny “translations” that had us laughing hard. With each step, the reality of the unfinished history project on Wednesday came to mind a little more, but the appeal of the museum kept us distracted. But as the hours passed, our feet hurt, and our eyelids grew heavy. When the bus finally rolled homeward, we were little more than two sleepy, drooping (耷拉下来的) figures, the weight of the unstarted history project on Wednesday now feeling like a heavy burden we’d been trying to ignore.
We got home at 6 pm, tired to the bone. Without even changing out of our clothes, we collapsed onto the couch for a few minutes. The thought of the history project on Wednesday weighed on us, but we were totally won out, and we tried not to think about it. Then, we dragged ourselves to bed earlier than usual, hoping to recover from the long day, as if sleep could magically make the project disappear.

B 25. D 26. B 27. A
根据第一段最后一句“But Chase Hoogsteden has already achieved more than a lot of kids of his age for Chase was beating leukaemia (白血病).(但蔡斯·霍格斯特登已经取得了比许多同龄孩子更多的成就,因为他正渐渐战胜白血病)”以及第二段第一句“Proud mum Tatum Hoogsteden said her family could never have imagined Chase competing again, let alone so soon after his battle against deadly blood cancer.(骄傲的母亲塔图姆·霍格斯特登说,她的家人从未想过蔡斯能再次参赛,更不用说在他与致命血癌作斗争之后这么快就参赛了)”可知,蔡斯在网球上取得成功之所以非同寻常,是因为他当时正在与白血病作斗争。
根据第三段“For the next 30 months, the Saint Stephen’s College student endured a brave battle against the cancer that left him so weak that he had to stay in bed.(在接下来的30个月里,这位圣斯蒂芬学院的学生勇敢地endured与癌症的斗争,这场斗争让他虚弱到不得不卧床休息)”。A.
根据第五段最后一句““Even when Chase was in the hospital bed unable to walk, we got video footage of him hitting tennis balls with his racquet.”(“即使蔡斯躺在病床上无法行走时,我们还拍到过他拿着球拍击打网球的画面。”)”
根据最后一段第一句“Chase won the Queensland final 6-3, 6-0 against a player who had beaten him two weeks earlier.(蔡斯在昆士兰州决赛中以6-3、6-0战胜了两周前曾击败过他的对手)”以及最后一句“He wants to win all the Grand Slams.(他想赢得所有大满贯)”可知,蔡斯在决赛中取得压倒性胜利,并且梦想赢得所有大满贯赛事,这表明他对自己的运动能力充满信心,有着远大的目标。
C
D 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据第一段第二句“According to a United Nations report, dry regions have expanded by an area almost three times the size of India. (根据一份联合国报告,干旱地区已经扩大了几乎三倍于印度国土面积的区域)”可知,作者在此处提到“印度”,是通过“几乎三倍于印度面积”这种比较,让读者更直观、具体地理解干旱地区扩张的规模。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段第二、三句“Besides greenhouse gases trapping heat, cutting down forests reduces rainfall because trees release water vapor that helps form rain clouds. Using too much groundwater for farming both results from and contributes to increased dryness. (除了温室气体捕获热量外,砍伐森林也会减少降雨,因为树木会释放有助于形成雨云的水蒸气。农业中过度使用地下水既是干旱加剧的结果,也是其原因)”可知,温室气体、砍伐森林、过度使用地下水均在文中被明确列为全球变干趋势的原因。D选项“The growth of poor countries (贫穷国家的增长)”并未被列为导致全球变干的原因。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段第二句“However, as Nichole Barger from UNCCD says, “The question is not whether we have the tools to respond — it is whether we have the will to act.”

F 37. G 38. E 39. D 40. A
上文“When people want to improve themselves, they usually try to do it directly through deliberate habit building.(当人们想要提升自己时,他们通常会试图通过刻意培养习惯来直接实现这一目标)”说明人们提升自我的常见方式是直接且刻意的培养习惯。
上文“Take Rob, who joins a Saturday rock-climbing group, as an example. To enjoy the trip, he naturally reduces heavy drinking on Friday nights.(以加入周六攀岩小组的罗布为例,为了享受这次攀岩活动,他自然而然地减少了周五晚上的酗酒行为)”用罗布的具体事例说明爱好会让人主动减少自身的不良行为,空处需要承接这个具体例子并对其进行总结提炼。选项G“In this case, the hobby replaces the unhealthy habit with a fulfilling one.(在这种情况下,这个爱好用一种充实的行为取代了不健康的习惯)”中指示代词This case精准指代前文罗布参与攀岩减少酗酒的事例,句子内容是对该事例的直接总结,明确体现了爱好对不良习惯的替代作用,与前文衔接紧密,符合语境。故选G。
上文“Any hobby requiring a new, positive routine will add structure to your life. For instance, having a dog establishes a daily walking habit. In this context, the key point isn’t anything to do with walking being healthful. It’s that the walking happens at the same time each day.(任何需要养成新的积极日常习惯的爱好都会为你的生活增添条理。例如,养狗会让人养成每天散步的习惯。在这种情况下,关键不在于散步有益健康,而在于每天都在同一时间散步)”可知,前文提到爱好能建立更好的日常惯例以养狗为例,关键在于每天同一时间散步,强调的是这种固定时间的routine带来的作用;结合选项可知,E项承 接的"the walking happens at the same time each day”,用“This routine”指代前文的固定遛 狗时间,说明这个固定时间点让夜晚的安排更有 条理。故选E。
【39题详解】
上文“Hobbies build tolerance for physical efforts. Sports or intense exercise helps us develop a better sense of what healthy physical efforts feel like. We learn to put up with feelings like increased heart rate without mistaking them for signs that something is wrong.(爱好能培养人对身体付出的忍耐力。 D“This tolerance can also be applied to other areas of life.(这种忍耐力也能应用到生活的其他方面)”中指示代词This tolerance精准指代前文提到的“对身体付出的忍耐力”,副词also体现出语义的递进,完美衔接后文忍耐力延伸到生活其他领域的内容,符合语境。故选D。
空后“If a hobby makes you see yourself as more responsible, more capable, or more invested in discipline, you're more likely to develop those qualities. Consider hobbies involving leadership or teamwork. They can shift how you see your role in the world and encourage you to act accordingly.(如果一个爱好让你认为自己更有责任感、更有能力或更注重自律,你就更有可能培养出这些品质。想想那些涉及领导力或团队合作的爱好,它们能改变你对自己在世界中所扮演角色的看法,并鼓励你做出相应的行动)”说明爱好能改变人们对自我的认知和定位,进而让人们培养出相应的优秀品质,空处作为本段的段首句,需要起到总领全段的作用,概括本段的核心内容。选项A“Hobbies can transform your identity.(爱好能改变你的自我认知)”精准概括了本段“爱好改变自我认知、塑造自我定位”的核心内容,能总领后文的所有表述,符合语境。故选A。

Since 2025, billboards in over 2,300 Chinese railway stations have changed greatly. Posters of popular stars have been replaced by photos of national heroes like Yuan Longping and Huang Xuhua, plus border and anti-epidemic pioneers. From my perspective, this change is truly meaningful.
These heroes have made great contributions to our nation, so they definitely deserve public respect and remembrance. Besides, this change guides young people to form right values, letting them learn from real role models instead of chasing empty celebrity glamour. 67.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Nighttime suddenly woke Emma up.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As the first light of dawn appeared, we finally completed the project.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nighttime suddenly woke Emma up. “The history project!” she cried out. Panic filled the room. We’d totally forgotten it was due the next day! We jumped out of bed, hearts beating fast. Turning on the lights, we searched through our backpacks in a hurry. Papers fell all over as we tried to remember what we’d done. Time went by quickly as we worked, our tired minds trying hard to focus. Just when we thought there was no hope, we found the important notes from the museum. New determination helped us finish the job.
As the first light of dawn appeared, we finally completed the project. We sank back into our chairs, smiling tiredly at each other. Our eyes looked tired but were full of pride. Extreme tiredness covered us completely, yet a strong feeling of success surrounded us. This experience taught us that even when things seem really bad, not giving up can lead to success. It also made us understand that sometimes, unexpected problems can turn a tiring day into a chance to learn about being tough.
