B In his new book, The Art of Learning, Josh Waitzkin tells his remarkable story of personal achievements and shares the principles of learning and performance that have driven him to the top — twice. Waitzkin knows what it means to be at the top of his game. A public figure since winning his first National Chess Championship at the age of nine, Waitzkin was thrown into a media storm as a teenager when his father’s book Searching for Bobby Fischer was made into a major motion picture. After dominating the scholastic chess world for ten years, Waitzkin expanded his horizons, taking on the martial art Tai Chi Chuan and ultimately earning the title of World Champion. How was he able to reach the peak of two disciplines that, on the surface, seem so different? “I’ve come to realize that what I am best at is not Tai Chi, and it is not chess,” he says. “What I am best at is the art of learning.” With a story that combines heart-stopping martial arts battles and tense chess face-offs with life lessons that speak to all of us, The Art of Learning takes readers through Waitzkin’s unique journey to excellence. He explains in clear detail how a well-thought-out, principled approach to learning is what separates success from failure. Waitzkin believes that achievement, even at the championship level, is a function of a lifestyle that fuels a creative, adaptable growth process. Through his own example, Waitzkin explains how to embrace defeat and make mistakes work for you. Does your opponent make you angry? Waitzkin describes how to channel emotions into creative fuel. As he explains it, obstacles (障碍) are not barriers but challenges to overcome, to motivate the growth process by turning weaknesses into strengths. He illustrates the exact routines that he has used in all his competitions, whether mental or physical, so that you too can achieve your peak performance zone in any competitive or professional circumstance. 4. What do we know about Josh Waitzkin? A. He has a talent for literature. B. He invented a learning method. C. He is better at Tai Chi than chess. D. He is a master of two unrelated fields. 5. What is essential for achieving excellence according to Waitzkin? A. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle. B. Paying close attention to details. C. Pursuing innovation and adaptability. D. Developing strong determination to succeed. 6. What does Waitzkin think of obstacles and challenges? A. They should be avoided at all costs. B. They offer chances for development. C. They are signs of personal weakness. D. They determine a person’s performance. 7. Which of the following can best describe Waitzkin’s book? A. Poetic and relaxing. B. Reflective and practical. C. Complex and theoretical. D. Professional and funny. C “CUT!” barks the director, and chaos erupts at a film studio in Los Angeles. Actors rush off to change their costumes, while crew members hurry to arrange new stage items. It is only the second day of filming and they have already packed in a week’s worth of cliffhangers (悬念). Filming a micro-drama, the latest new-media format to emerge from China, is just as fast-paced as watching one. “It’s soaps on steroids (激素),” a screenwriter explains. Micro-dramas are mini soap operas designed for the smartphone generation. Episodes are filmed in a vertical format and last just over a minute each. The acting tends to be overly dramatic, the story-lines often crazy, with titles like “The Ordinary Student’s Sudden Royal Heritage”. But the bite-sized stories are perfect for China’s many young working professionals: long trips to and from work and tiring schedules leave little time for binge-watching box-sets on the sofa. A single micro-drama can cost over $10 to watch, with the first few episodes free of charge and the rest behind a paywall. Yet viewers have been willing to pay good money for it. This has fueled domestic enthusiasm: larger film companies are stepping in to expand production, while more traditional streaming platforms are setting up their own micro-drama channels. Now many apps are spreading the love, delivering micro-dramas to new audiences outside China. They don’t just translate Chinese series but also create original content with foreign actors, writers and directors. However, due to cultural differences, overseas actors sometimes struggle to understand why Chinese producers insist on sticking to cheesy tropes (俗气的桥段) and over-the-top acting. Nevertheless, micro-drama apps have reached a total of nearly 55m downloads and $170m in receipts overseas, according to iiMedia Research, a data provider. These vertical shorts don’t seem like a flash in the pan. Sometimes less really is more. 8. What is a feature of micro-dramas’ filming according to the text? A. It adopts a high-tech style. B. It requires significant funds. C. It is a highly efficient process. D. It involves numerous instructions. 9. Why are micro-dramas ideal for China’s many young workers? A. They are insightful to watch. B. They fit well with their busy schedules. C. They provide free episodes to viewers. D. They mirror the lives of young people. 10. What might be a challenge for the expansion of micro-dramas overseas? A. Adaptation to local cultures. B. Competition from local dramas. C. High standards in global markets. D. Lack of appropriate foreign actors. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Soap Operas Develop Quickly in Digital Era B. Chinese Film Industry Sees a New Transformation C. Micro-Dramas Bring More Opportunities to the World D. China’s Micro-Dramas Will Enjoy Long-Term Success D For decades “Monday blues” has been a term for the collective groan (叹息) that greets the start of each workweek. Mondays come with higher rates of anxiety, stress and even suicide compared with other days. The stress and anxiety experienced on Monday seems to ease as the week unfolds. But is the stress and anxiety biologically distinct? Furthermore, could the fleeting changes in mood leave a mark on people’s body even after they stop working? To answer these questions, Professor Tarani Chandola from HKU, looked into the phenomenon, focusing on the stress hormone cortisol (皮质醇). When we experience a stressor, the brain activates the release of cortisol, which helps us to manage short-term stress. But constant high levels of cortisol disturb the brain and bodily systems, increasing the risk of anxiety, depression, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Chandola studied 3,511 participants aged 50 and older in England, and the results were striking. Older adults who reported feeling anxious on Mondays had, on average, 23 percent higher levels of cortisol up to two months later, compared with those who felt anxious on other days. And the effect was not limited to those still working; retirees who felt anxious on Mondays also showed higher cortisol. Why might Mondays, in particular, have a powerful effect on the body? One possibility is that the shift from the weekend to the high demands of the week is essentially stressful. Also, some people become anxious on Mondays so routinely that it becomes an automatic bodily response. For some people, Monday blues are constant stressors. Hospitals may need to plan for the increased risk of heart attacks and other health events on Mondays, especially among older adults. In addition, international practices like meditation, mindfulness, regular physical activity or good sleep might help people adapt to the start of the week and have long-term health benefits. Finally, researchers will need to investigate why some people are resilient (适应力强) to Monday anxiety while others are not. That question might open the door to interventions that help people start the week not just with a groan but with greater resilience. 12. What does the underlined word “fleeting” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Extreme. B. Uncommon. C. Short-lived. D. Far-reaching. 13. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3? A. To define a medical term. B. To show ways to handle stress. C. To explain how cortisol helps reduce stress. D. To reveal how stress harms health biologically. 14. What did Chandola’s study find about Monday anxiety? A. Its levels are closely related to age. B. It is a lifelong burden for some people. C. It is the primary challenge people face. D. Its effects are limited among the elderly. 15. Which is one of the author’s suggestions to address Monday blues? A. Researchers doing further studies. B. Hospitals keeping track of the old. C. Individuals seeking help from others. D. Companies reducing Monday workloads. As part of my research for my book, I’m doing an experiment — a “daily visit.” I wanted to visit the same place every day, for an entire year, to see how that experience would affect my perceptions. ____16____ A large place, a beautiful place, and an inexhaustible place. It had been weeks since the last rain; the grass was dry and golden-brown, crackling underfoot. The summer was brutally hot, and local news had warned of high fire risk. Leo was just about to step inside when a faint smell of smoke drifted through the air. He turned toward the forest behind the farm and saw a thin column of smoke rising above the treetops. At first, he didn’t think much of the smoke, figuring it was nothing to worry about. But within minutes, the smoke grew thicker and turned pale gray. A small brush fire was moving slowly but steadily toward the farm. Leo told himself there was probably still time before it became a real threat. Leo’s parents were away in town, leaving him alone with his eight-year-old sister Emma. His heart pounded as he realized he was the only one that could protect Emma. Remembering the emergency drills his father had taught him — grab the bag, get to the truck, and don’t look back, he quickly picked up the emergency bag, threw it into the truck, and called Emma to run. But just as he started the engine, Emma screamed, “Lucky is still in the woods!” Lucky was their old dog, who had wandered off that morning. Leo’s blood ran cold. Though the fire was not intense, it was heading straight toward his home. Through the rear view (后视) mirror, Leo could even see some flames. Emma was crying, pulling at his sleeve. Lucky’s desperate barking echoed from deep in the forest. Leo looked at Emma, then at the forest. His mind raced: if he went in, he might be trapped; if he didn’t, he would never forgive himself. He had a difficult and dangerous choice to make, and only seconds to make it. Leo took a deep breath and made his decision. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When they finally reached the main road, Leo looked back. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2027届高二下学期期中考试试题 英语 命题人:2027届核心备课组 (满分120分,考试时间120分钟。) A Summer Camp Registration Guide-Green Valley Outdoor Center Welcome to Green Valley! Filming a micro-drama, the latest new-media format to emerge from China, is just as fast-paced as watching one.(才拍摄第二天,他们就已经拍完了相当于一周分量的悬念剧情。 根据第二段“But the bite-sized stories are perfect for China’s many young working professionals: long trips to and from work and tiring schedules leave little time for binge-watching box-sets on the sofa.(但这些短小精悍的故事非常适合中国众多年轻职场人士:漫长的通勤路程和疲惫的日程安排让他们几乎没有时间在沙发上一口气看完一整部剧集。)” 根据第四段“However, due to cultural differences, overseas actors sometimes struggle to understand why Chinese producers insist on sticking to cheesy tropes (俗气的桥段) and over-the-top acting.(然而,由于文化差异,海外演员有时很难理解为什么中国制片人坚持使用俗气的桥段和夸张的表演。)” 通读全文特别是根据最后一段“Nevertheless, micro-drama apps have reached a total of nearly 55m downloads and $170m in receipts overseas, according to iiMedia Research, a data provider. 12. C 13. D 14. B 15. But constant high levels of cortisol disturb the brain and bodily systems, increasing the risk of anxiety, depression, heart disease, diabetes and obesity.(当我们经历压力时,大脑会激活皮质醇的释放,帮助我们应对短期压力。 根据第四段中“Chandola studied 3,511 participants aged 50 and older in England, and the results were striking. Older adults who reported feeling anxious on Mondays had, on average, 23 percent higher levels of cortisol up to two months later, compared with those who felt anxious on other days. And the effect was not limited to those still working; retirees who felt anxious on Mondays also showed higher cortisol.(Chandola研究了英格兰3511名50岁及以上的参与者,结果令人震惊。 根据最后一段中“Finally, researchers will need to investigate why some people are resilient (适应力强) to Monday anxiety while others are not. That question might open the door to interventions that help people start the week not just with a groan but with greater resilience.(最后,研究人员需要调查为什么有些人对周一焦虑有适应力,而有些人则没有。 故选A。 As part of my research for my book, I’m doing an experiment — a “daily visit.” I wanted to visit the same place every day, for an entire year, to see how that experience would affect my perceptions. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Possible version: Leo took a deep breath and made his decision. He told Emma to stay in the truck with the engine running and promised to be back soon. Grabbing a blanket from the emergency bag, he wet it with water and covered his mouth and nose. Without a moment’s hesitation, he dashed towards the woods. He called out Luoky’s name again and again, desperately hoping for the dog’s response. Just as he was about to give up, he heard a faint bark. He followed the sound and found that in a small cave laid the dog, which was too weak to move. Leo wrapped the blanket around the dog, and ran back to the truck as fast as his legs could carry him. When they finally reached the main road. Leo looked back. The fire had spread to the farmhouse, and the roof was collapsing in flames. Emma threw herself into Leo’s arms, tears of relief streaming down her face. Lucky, exhausted yet safe, wagged his tail weakly to show gratitude. Leo realized how close they had come to disaster— just minutes more, and none of them would have made it. He called his parents in a shaky voice and updated them on their safety. An hour later, his parents arrived and were proud of what Leo had done. Together, they watched the fire, knowing that while they lost their home, their family and their beloved dog were safe— and that was what mattered most. 3.词汇激活 行为类 ①告诉:tell /inform ②发现:find/spot 情绪类 ①疲惫的:exhausted/stressed out ②颤抖的:shaky/trembling 【点睛】【高分句型 1】He told Emma to stay in the truck with the engine running and promised to be back soon.(运用了 with 复合结构 with the engine running ) 【高分句型 2】Leo realized how close they had come to disaster— just minutes more, and none of them would have made it.(运用了 how 引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
