Windows are an important part of traditional Chinese buildings. They often have special patterns (图案) and beautiful designs. These windows not only let in light, but also show Chinese culture. Recently, Beijing No.166 High School held a window design competition. Students used wood pieces to make models and added their own creative ideas.
It was not an easy project. Students first studied how traditional Chinese windows were made. They also learned about different patterns and skills. One student, Fan Ruhao, said they used the hui pattern in their design. This pattern stands for harmony (和谐) and continuity (持续性). His team got their idea from the Mid-Autumn Festival. They thought the pattern was just what they needed.
Some students also tried new ideas. They combined traditional beauty with modern technology. Li Muyang and her team used computer programming to control a small door on their work. The door could open and close. They believed that traditional culture is never out of date. With the help of technology, it can shine in a new way.
Through this activity, students learned more than just design skills. At first, some students did not understand the purpose of the competition. But after working for two months, they found it helped improve their creativity, practical skills, and teamwork.
21. Students used bamboo pieces to make window models.

Phoebe Snetsinger’s doctors told her that she had cancer (癌症). She had less than a year to live. Phoebe was 50. As soon as she heard the news, she decided to spend the rest of her life doing what she loved most—watching birds.
She immediately went to some of the world’s most amazing natural places. Her trips were hard. But Phoebe surprised her doctors and her family as she kept on travelling. A year came and went, and she was still alive. She was doing something that she loved and that helped her to be healthy for another ten years. At the age of 61, when she had seen 7,530 species, she was named ‘the world’s No.1 bird watcher’ by the Guinness Book of Records (吉尼斯世界纪录). Four years later, during a trip to Mexico, she set a new record when she spotted (发现) species number 8,000.
Sadly, when Phoebe was 68, she died in a car accident on the island of Madagascar. She was there enjoying the hobby that saved her life. Four years after she died, the American Birding Association published her book, Birding on Borrowed Time. Many people have enjoyed reading this moving book. It isn’t just a story about a bird watcher’s travels, but a touching story of how her hobby helped her to live much longer than expected.

Death Valley is one of the world’s hottest areas, but the place with the record for the highest temperature is El Azizia in Libya. There, the temperature reached a record of 57.8℃ in 1922. Death Valley’s highest temperature on record is 56.7℃. That’s not a lot cooler!
Antarctica is the most fascinating (迷人的) place for extreme (极端的) weather. It’s the world’s coldest place. And it’s not only the wettest, but also the driest place. Are you surprised? Well, here are the facts. People cannot live in Antarctica all year round because it’s too cold. In 1983, scientists recorded the lowest temperature ever: -89.4°C! It’s also the wettest place on earth, but not because it’s got the most rain or snow. It’s the “wettest” place because 98% of Antarctica is covered in ice. But it’s also the driest place because it never rains there—it only snows! Antarctica holds another record too—there is a place there with the world’s thickest ice; it’s 2,555 m deep!
So where are the best and worst places in the world for weather? That’s the most difficult question. What’s good for one person may be bad for another. In 2012, an organization named “International Living” tried to answer this—their number 1 for the best weather was Italy, their number 2 was France, and Mexico was number 3! Where do you think your country would come?
36. Which place has the record for the highest temperature in the world?
A. Italy. B. Antarctica. C. El Azizia. D. Death Valley.
37. Which of the following describes Antarctica according to the text?

A. The best and worst places in the world.
B. The coldest and hottest places in the world.
C. The most beautiful and sunniest places in the world.
D. The most extreme and dangerous places in the world.
39. In which part of a newspaper can you probably read the text?

例文
The Person I Want to Thank
The person I want to thank most is my English teacher, Ms. Wang.
Last year, I was afraid to speak English in class and almost gave up. She noticed my problem and always encouraged me to speak up. She even stayed after class to help me practice every week. Little by little, I became confident and made great progress. She taught me that hard work and courage can make a difference.
I will always remember her kindness and be thankful to her.
