Today was great! My family and I visited a small, hidden workshop belonging to Uncle Li, a 58-year-old man who has lived in Xi’an for over 50 years. He is a 21 at making paper-cuts, a famous traditional art in Shaanxi.
When we pushed open the old wooden door of Uncle Li’s workshop, a strong sense of 22 washed over us. The walls there were covered with beautiful paper-cuts — some were in the 23 of tigers, some were flowers, and others showed scenes from ancient stories.
Uncle Li 24 me how to make a simple paper-cut of a pomegranate, the official city flower of Xi’an. His hands moved 25 and skillfully. In just a few minutes, an 26 pomegranate paper-cut appeared in his hand. I tried my best to follow him, but my 27 try was not good. Uncle Li smiled and said, “Practice makes perfect. Paper cutting needs not only skills, but also 28 . You need to be more careful to make it better.” I slowed down and tried again. 29 , the shape of a pomegranate takes form.
After that, Uncle Li shared his 30 of paper cutting — when he was young, his family was very poor. He had to sell his works to 31 his family. And paper cutting helped his family 32 those hard times. “Those times were not easy, but paper cutting was my hope,” he said. “It’s part of our Shaanxi culture, and I want to 33 it to keep it alive.”
Today was a really 34 day. I not only learned how to make a simple paper-cut, but also had a better understanding of this art form, and felt the deep love of a local paper cutting master. This experience has taught me that traditional art is not just 35 we read about in books — it’s alive, full of love, and worth cherishing and passing on.

Everyone knows how important it is for students to sleep well every night. Most experts say the best amount of sleep is about eight hours a night. Many people think so, but the truth is that most students get less sleep than that. This can hurt their school performance.
A teachers’ magazine recently did a study with 848 students in Wales. The results showed that many teenagers now have a new problem. They go to bed at the right time and get up at a normal time, but more and more are waking up in the middle of the night — not to go to the bathroom or get food, but because of something called FOMO: fear of missing out.
The study found that some teenagers wake up just to check social media. They don’t want to miss a message or the chance to join a chat. So even when they should be fast asleep, they are going online instead.
Here are some important facts from the report:
❖Twenty-three percent of 12-year-olds to 15-year-olds wake up almost every night to check social media. Another 15 percent do this at least once a week.
❖One in three students feels tired all the time because of lack of sleep.
❖Students who go online at night are more likely to feel sad or stressed.
So, try to be smart with social media. Be strong — turn off your phone at night. The world will still be there in the morning, and you won’t miss anything important.
39. Which of the following students has the problem of FOMO?
A. Lily woke up at 4 o’clock in the morning yesterday because of headache.
B. Tom often wakes up at midnight to check social media.
C. Sarah wakes up many times at midnight just to go to the bathroom.
D. David often stays up late to finish his homework and feels tired the next day.
40. Who might the passage be written for?
A. Teachers. B. Doctors. C. Parents. D. Students.
41. What’s the best title for the text?
A. FOMO: a way to destroy your social life
B. FOMO: a cause for bad sleep
C. Social media: a fun way to chat
D. Social media: the main cause for bad school performance

Scientists have discovered that floating① solar panels② could produce huge amounts of energy if they were placed on bodies of water across the globe. In addition to producing power, these solar panels could also help save water and protect land resources.
Solar panels are also referred to as “photovoltaic③” panels. They turn sunlight into electricity. Traditionally, most solar panels are placed on land in large groups. In recent years, however, scientists have begun to explore placing floating solar panels on water. Because these panels float on water, they are sometimes called “floatovoltaics”.
China has already built several large-scale floating photovoltaic farms. Floatovoltaics offer a number of clear advantages in producing energy and saving the environment.
Floatovoltaics produce more electricity than land-based ones. Water cools the panels, reducing energy loss and making them produce 5%-15% more electricity. Sunlight reflected off the water onto the panels further increases power production by 2%-12%.
Floatovoltaics can also help save water. They prevent water from evaporating④ in the sun. The water saved in this way could meet the needs of around 300,000 people in a year.
Furthermore, placing solar panels on water also means that there’s no need to clear land. This helps to protect natural spaces for wildlife.
Floatovoltaics aren’t perfect, though. For example, they cost about 25% more than land-based ones. In addition, covering bodies of water with panels could affect the plants and animals in the water. Scientists are working on these problems.
