Step 1. Lead-in
Activity: Warm-up Discussion
Show the unit's opening photo and ask:
What Chinese cultural elements do you see in the photo?
How do we greet people in Chinese culture?
Step 2. Pre-listening
Activity 1: Match Greetings to Pictures (1a)
Present the greeting vocabulary.
Ask students to match each term to the correct image, then review answers as a class.
Practice pronunciation, focusing on stress in "kiss cheeks" and "rub noses".
Activity 2: Cultural Greeting Brainstorm
Ask students to brainstorm greetings they know from other countries.
Write responses on the board and discuss how greetings reflect cultural values.
Step 3. While-listening
Activity 1: Match Guests to Feelings (1b)
a.Play the first recording of three party conversations. Ask students to listen and match each guest to their feeling.
Review answers and discuss why each character felt that way.
Activity 2: Complete Greeting Table (1c)
a.Play the recording again. Ask students to fill in the table with the common greetings from each country.
Review answers and discuss how greetings vary by culture.
Step 4. Post-listening
Role-play Greeting Scenarios (1d)
Divide students into pairs and assign them characters from 1b.
Ask them to role-play a meeting, using the prompts.
Step 5. Summary
Vocabulary: shake hands, bow, bump fists, rub noses, kiss cheeks, hug.
