Seven children line up, awaiting their turn on a slide. As each child rushes down, the ones behind laugh and cheer. Such scene is rare in Lagos, one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, with a population of about 17 million. But on the city’s outskirts, a garbage-site-turned-park is providing room for kids to play. The project is the brainchild of 17-year-old Amara Nwuneli, who wants to prove that even in Lagos’ most crowded corners, children can have fun.
For Amara, the path to building parks began when a terrible flood struck her hometown in 2020. Heavy rains swallowed entire neighborhoods, leaving thousands of families homeless. “People just said it was government failure or bad luck.” Amara recalls. But, later, she realized it was what was called Nigeria’s “climate apathy”: the tendency to view floods, heat waves, and droughts as isolated (孤立的) incidents rather than consequences of a warming planet.
“I wanted to change the mindset,” Amara says. “If people don’t feel connected to nature, they won’t fight to protect it. And I knew that had to start with creating spaces people could actually see and feel.”
It was no easy task. Amara first approached the Lagos State Government, which offered land but imposed (施加) restrictions that made long-term construction impossible. After months of dead ends, she shifted strategy and started looking for alternative spaces that were accessible to high-risk communities. Eventually, Amara secured a garbage site. She then mobilized a team of artists, volunteers, and small donors to clear the trash and rebuild the site with recycled materials. Three months later, the park opened.
Amara is now planning two more parks. She says communities from across the country have been reaching out to her team for advice on how to reclaim abandoned spaces for public use. “That creates a kind of cycle,” Amara reflects. “I take action, others notice, they want to take action, too. And together, it grows.”
4. What might be a problem Lagos is facing?
A. Insufficient public areas. B. Poor garbage management.
C. Limited recreational activities. D. Uncontrolled population growth.
5. What made Amara determined to build parks?
A. Losses from natural disasters.
B. People’s ignorance of climate change.
C. Disappointment in government failure.
D. Nigeria’s inadequacy in public education.
6. What quality does Amara demonstrate when completing the project?
A. Integrity. B. Optimism. C. Flexibility. D. Confidence.
7. What does Amara want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Small steps make a big difference. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. All roads lead to Rome. D. It is never too late to act.

If you see an enormous, deadly funnel-web spider sitting on her egg sac (卵袋), your first instinct might be to run away.
But the Australian Reptile Park (ARP) in New South Wales is urging residents of nearby Sydney to suppress that fear, remain calm, and carefully collect both the spider and her eggs in a secure container so they can be used to make life-saving antivenom (抗毒血清).
Funnel-webs, whose most dangerous species lives in and around Sydney, are known for their deadly, fast-acting venom. Before the antivenom was introduced in 1981, 13 people died as a result of funnel-web bites. Since its introduction, there have been no fatalities.
The Australian Reptile Park issues this callout to the public every November when the spiders’ breeding season begins and stresses its importance in helping to save lives. The zoo is the sole supplier of funnel-web spider antivenom, which it produces by milking the spiders collected.
“With breeding season upon us and the weather creating ideal conditions, we rely on spider donations more than ever,” the zoo’s spider keeper, Emma Teni, said in a statement. “Male funnel-web spiders have short lifespans, and with approximately 150 spiders required to make just one small bottle of antivenom, we need the public’s help to ensure we have enough venom to meet demand.”
The spiders frequent cool, damp areas with dense leaves, though the zoo warned that they can also be found in homes — especially in places like piles of laundry, shoes left outside, swimming pools and debris in gardens.
People whose lives had been saved by the antivenom also urged the public to participate in the program. “ARP and your antivenom program saved my life in 1994,” Nicole Webber commented on the Australian Reptile Park’s Facebook post. “I can only thank you all. Please do support the program with safely captured spiders and finance.”
8. What is the ARP asking residents to do with funnel-web spiders?
A. Protect their endangered habitats. B. Run away from them.
C. Collect them in a container. D. Use them to save lives.
9. The underlined word “fatalities” in paragraph 3 most probably means __________.
A. serious accidents B. permanent disabilities
C. recorded deaths D. successful rescues
10. What can we learn from Emma Teni’s words?
A. The zoo may lack antivenom without public help.
B. The breeding season is the best time to study spiders.
C. The public has shown less interest in donating spiders.
D. The zoo has had enough spiders for antivenom production.
11. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Funnel-Web Spiders: Most Dangerous Spider Species.
B. Australian Reptile Park: A Call for Community Reflection.
C. Saving Lives: Funnel-Web Spider Antivenom Production.
D. From Fear to Rescue: The Urgent Spider Collection Drive.

Drug development has long been known as a high-risk and high-cost process. On average, only one in every ten drug candidates that enter human trials eventually reaches the market. The journey from initial discovery to a marketable drug often spans 10 to 15 years, and the cost for a single drug is estimated at roughly $2.8 billion. This high risk and cost, coupled with the eventual loss of patent protection, creates constant pressure on drug companies to find the next breakthrough treatment.
In recent years, generative AI has begun to change this picture. The drug industry is rapidly adopting AI technologies that can analyse massive biological data sets. These AI tools can identify promising drug targets and propose novel molecules (分子) that might interact with them. They can also screen libraries of data to predict the effectiveness and safety of candidates before any lab work begins. In addition, they can improve clinical trials by analysing health records to identify patients most likely to benefit from new treatments. Although the technology is still developing, early signs suggest it could make drug discovery faster, cheaper and more competitive.
One encouraging result is seen in early-stage trials. AI-designed molecules have shown success rates of 80-90% in early-stage safety tests, far higher than the historical average of 40-65%. AI is also improving efficiency in other areas of the industry, from clinical paperwork to human resources. Some analysts estimate that the drug industry can gain up to $110 billion each year if AI is fully used.
The rise of AI is transforming how the drug industry works. AI-native biotech businesses are emerging, especially in the U. S. and China. Drug firms are partnering with these biotech companies and also with tech giants like Amazon, Google and Microsoft. Some tech firms are even developing platforms to design drugs entirely through computer simulations. For instance, Google’s AlphaFold has already solved complex problems regarding protein structures.
However, challenges remain. Governments may need to speed up regulatory reviews as the number of drug candidates increases. Patient data sharing must also be encouraged in privacy-protecting ways. Furthermore, patent rules may require adjustment if AI reduces the cost and risk of innovation. AI brings good news for medicine, but ensuring it benefits both drugmakers and patients requires the industry and regulators to adjust to this new reality.
12. What is the primary challenge for traditional drug companies?
A. The shortage of breakthrough treatments.
B. Inability to discover effective drug candidates.
C. Limited access to cutting-edge research technologies.
D. Long duration and economic burdens of drug development.
13. From paragraph 2, how does AI benefit clinical trials?
A. By designing new molecules. B. By helping select suitable patients.
C. By discovering new effective drugs. D. By detecting proper drug targets.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. AI-driven changes in the drug industry. B. The rise of AI-native biotech firms.
C. Google’s achievements in protein structures. D. Tech giants’ partnerships with drugmakers.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Patent rules are fixed for AI innovation.
B. Faster reviews can protect patient data privacy.
C. Policies should be revised for the benefits from AI.
D. Advanced systems are essential for drug innovation.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Every day, students move through school carrying not just textbooks but a collection of different identities. In one moment, a student may be a responsible class leader. ____16____ Each role demands a different tone, attitude, and level of confidence. Challenges emerge when these identities conflict. However, what many teenagers don’t realize is that the constant switch between these roles shapes much of their emotional experience at school.
____17____ For example, a student who enjoys helping others may feel comfortable acting as a group organizer during projects, yet the same student may feel uncertain when stepping into a role that requires public speaking or taking the lead in a debate. This contrast can be confusing, making students wonder which version of themselves is real.
But teenagers should bear in mind that identity is not a fixed label. ____18____ The ability to shift roles is a skill that grows stronger with practice. Each role presents a different piece of who they are becoming.
Learning to navigate the challenging transitions begins with self-awareness. Students who take time to reflect — asking themselves why a particular role feels easy or difficult — often develop greater emotional resilience (韧性). ____19____ They recognize when to step forward, when to step back, and when to simply observe.
Eventually, students come to understand that they are not defined by a single identity. Instead, they are shaped by all the roles they play. Mastering the art of switching roles is not about performing for others. ____20____
A. Later, she becomes a supportive friend.
B. Indeed, it is more like a flexible framework.
C. They gain clearer insight into their classmates.
D. Some roles come naturally, while others require effort.
E. Shifting roles isn’t necessarily challenging for everyone.
F. Over time, they learn to adjust without losing themselves.
G. Instead, it is about discovering a complete version of oneself.

Frank had just adapted to his new life in China. Among the many exciting experiences, he struck up a close friendship with Li Ming, a local student.
One Saturday, Li Ming invited Frank to try traditional Chinese food, steamed dumplings, for lunch. Eager to experience the local culture, Frank delightedly accepted the invitation. The moment Frank arrived, Li Ming, along with his mother, Mrs. Zhou greeted him warmly at the door. Inside the house, a cute cat was playing, adding a touch of liveliness to the already joyous occasion.
Then they gathered in the kitchen to make steamed dumplings together. Li Ming prepared the filling, while Mrs. Zhou taught Frank how to make dumpling wrappers. Mrs. Zhou gently instructed Frank, “The dough should not be too wet or sticky, and rolling the dumpling wrappers requires most care to ensure the same thickness.” Everything going smoothly, the steamed dumplings were ready.
Suddenly, an unexpected incident occurred when Frank offered to set the table in the dining room. As Frank put a plate on the table, his hand slipped. With a loud crash, the plate fell onto the floor, scattering dipping sauce everywhere. In panic, Frank stood rooted to the spot with his mind completely blank. Mrs. Zhou rushed out of the kitchen. With Mrs. Zhou’s caring eyes fixed on him, Frank was too ashamed to tell the truth. Seeing the cat nearby, Frank stammered, “It was the cat. ” Mrs. Zhou smiled gently, “It happens. The cat is always energetic and naughty.” Li Ming laughed, “Never mind.” Mrs. Zhou quickly cleaned up the mess with her son.
The steamed dumplings were delicious. Li Ming and his mother were trying their best to make Frank feel at home. However, it was hard for Frank to really enjoy the food, because he lied to his good friend’s mother and his friend! Finally, Frank said goodbye to the friendly family and left with his secret.

【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. A

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

【答案】范文
On the bus back home, Frank’s heart over flowed with mixed feelings. It was an accident, right? And it was only a plate. But it was not the cat that was to blame! It was the people who treated him with kindness and delicious food that he had lied to! He was torn between telling the truth and letting it go. Frank’s heart raced as he replayed the scene in his mind. So ashamed did Frank feel that he could feel his face burning. Thinking of Mrs. Zhou’s gentle smile, Frank finally decided to do the right thing.
The following morning, Frank knocked on the door of Li Ming’s house. Mrs. Zhou opened the door with a welcoming smile. With blood pounding in his ears, Frank gathered all his courage to tell Mrs. Zhou that he broke the plate by accident instead of the cat. Smiling broadly, Mrs. Zhou patted him on the shoulder, saying, “It’s ok, dear. Accidents happen. I’m so proud of you!” Hearing this, Frank felt a weight lifted from his mind. He sighed with relief, his face lighting up. Not until then did he realize nothing is more important than honesty.
