“OK. Now it’s time for art class,” Mr Combs says.
“I hate drawing,” Kiyo says to a classmate. “I have no talent for drawing. My pictures look as if a baby drew them!”
Do you feel the same as Kiyo? Most often, people don’t like to draw because their pictures aren’t realistic. There’s a reason you might find it hard to draw realistically. Like many people, you probably draw things the way you think they look. You see people’s eyes all the time, so you might think you know in your mind what eyes look like. But your minds don’t remember all the details. For example, picture in your mind what an eye looks like. Do you just picture it as being a simple oval shape? Now look at someone’s eyes. Real eyes are far more complicated.
Artists have a way to draw realistically. They don’t depend on their minds to know how things look. They use their eyes to see how things look. Artists know that the art of drawing is the art of seeing.
When an artist is drawing a person, she has the person or a photo of the person in front of her. She watches the size and shape of his eyes carefully. She compares the angle of his neck to his shoulder. She also sees where his hands are and how they look. The artist looks at each detail, and then starts to draw the person.
59. What does the underlined word “complicated” in the text probably mean?
A. 隐藏的 B. 复杂的 C. 暗淡的 D. 无神的
60. How do artists draw realistically?
A. They use their talents. B. They depend on their minds.
C. They put a book in front of them. D. They use their eyes to watch carefully.
61. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To offer advice on how to be an artist.
B. To advise people to learn to draw from an artist.

What brought you and your friends together? Was it shared hobbies or similar personalities? Apart from these common reasons, genetics (基因) may also play a role.
According to a US study with 1,932 people, friends have a kinship coefficient (亲缘系数) that is 0.0014 higher than in strangers! The kinship coefficient is an easy way to see how genetically related (相关的) two people are—the higher the number, the closer the relation.
Don’t look down on this number. The kinship coefficient between parents and children is about 0.25. For first cousins, it’s about 0.0625, while for fourth cousins, it’s around only 0.001. This means you might share more genes with your best friend than with some distant (遥远的) family members.
The question is, why are people with a high level of kinship coefficient more likely to become friends? The research team found that many of the top one percent of similar genes are related to the sense of smell. This means that close friends may have a similar sense of smell.
A study in Science Advances also showed that people who become close friends usually have similar body smells. Researchers collected sweat samples (汗液样本) from 20 pairs of friends. They all became close in a short time. Using an e-nose and human volunteers to study the smells, they found that friends’ body odors (体味) were more alike than those of strangers. So, next time you hug your friends, you might notice that they smell a bit like you!
62. What can the kinship coefficient show?
A. How close two friends are related.
B. How close the genetic relation between two people is.
C. How long it takes for two strangers to become friends.
D. How much two friends have in common.
63. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Our best friend might be a distant family member.
B. The kinship coefficient between two friends is 0.0014.
C. Best friends have a higher kinship coefficient than first cousins.
D. Best friends can share more genetic similarities than distant relatives.
64. According to the text, in what way are best friends similar?
A. They like the smell of each other’s body. B. They grow at a similar pace.
C. Their body smells are similar. D. Their sweat is similar.
65. What is the structure of the text?(①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2,)
A. ① | ② | ③④⑤ B. ① | ②③ | ④⑤ C. ①② | ③ | ④⑤ D. ①②③ | ④ | ⑤
【答案】62. B 63. D 64. C 65. B

Hi, David
My favorite teacher left this semester. I won’t see her in class anymore, and I miss her a lot. She is very busy, so I don’t want to bother her. How can I get used to this?
Lily
A
Hi, Lily
The phrase “time heals all wounds” comes to mind. The answer, while not an easy one, is of course, that you will feel better about it with time.
I remember my favorite teacher, Mr. Shaw. He was so funny and kind and he always talked to me like a friend. I still miss him sometimes, even now. But I hold onto those great memories from his classes.
Life changes, just like the seasons. It’s sad when people go out of their lives, but just like spring follows winter, new beginnings come after endings. New teachers and friends will come into your life and bring joy, just like the warmth and brightness of spring.
Try to accept these changes as part of life, much like the changing seasons.
And at some point, go and see your old teacher, too. Or even write her a letter. She may be busy, but I’m sure she’ll be happy to spare a little time to say hello to an old student.
Take care.

Boiling an egg just right is often difficult. It is quite common that the egg white gets cooked while the yolk is still runny. By the time the yolk is completely cooked, the egg white has become rubbery (难嚼的).
Italian scientists have found the best way to cook eggs. They call it “periodic cooking”. It takes 32 minutes and you need to move the egg between boiling water and 30℃ water every two minutes.
The yolk and the egg white are made of different things and cooked at different temperatures, said Medical News Today. The yolk has most of the vitamins and is given to baby chicks as food. The egg white has more protein and water.
The Italian scientists first ran tests on a computer to see how heat moves in the egg. The tests found that changing the temperature between 100℃ and 30℃ can help cook a perfect egg.
The next step was to try the idea with real eggs. With special tools and eight taste experts, the scientists compared the results of the new cooking method with the usual way we make hard-boiled eggs (cooked for 12 minutes) and soft-boiled eggs (cooked for six minutes).
The study showed periodic cooking made both the egg white and the yolk taste best. It was also the best way to help the egg keep the most nutrients, CNN said.
69. What is often hard about boiling an egg?
A. Keeping the yolk runny. B. Making sure the yolk is fully cooked.
C. Boiling it for the right amount of time. D. Cooking both the egg white and yolk just right.

B. The advantages of periodic cooking.

71. Which question can the third paragraph answer?
A. What’s the perfect way to cook eggs?
B. What vitamins do baby chicks need?
C. How does the egg white protect baby chicks?
D. Why do eggs need different temperatures to be cooked?
72. In which part of a newspaper can we probably read the text?

A. To offer advice on how to be an artist.
B. To advise people to learn to draw from an artist.
C. To give an example of how artists draw realistically.
D. To give reasons why artists can draw realistically.

①②③ | ④ | ⑤

Take care.
David
