Mark, an eighth-grader felt stressed by schoolwork. One hot afternoon, as he tried to finish maths problems at his desk, the numbers swam before his tired eyes. A failed test paper lay on the floor. Fear filled his heart. He ran to a park and sat on an old bench (长凳).
By a large tree, an old man was feeding birds. Birds flew down freely, and some even landed on his open hand. “Young friend,” the old man said kindly, noticing Mark’s sad face, “why does sadness hang over you like heavy rain?”
Mark shared his worries: there were many tests, sleepless nights, and fear of failing. The old man listened quietly. Picking up a stick, he drew a river in the dirt (泥土). “Notice these bends (弯曲处)?” he said softly. “If water pushes straight forward, it will break against rocks or disappear. But by flowing gently (温柔地流), turning around stones, it reaches the sea.” He told Mark how famous thinkers found their best ideas while resting: Beethoven walking in the woods, Newton sitting under a tree. “Bright minds,” he smiled, “need quiet moments to grow.”
The next day, Mark woke up 30 minutes earlier than before. Instead of studying, he watched the sunrise paint the sky pink and orange. He drew funny cloud shapes in his notebook. During short breaks, he sat under trees, eyes closed, listening to leaves whisper Slowly, his body felt lighter. Surprisingly, difficult maths problems seemed easier, as if his mind was wiped clean.

When I was small, my mum always told me, “I just want you to be happy.” But what exactly is happiness? Is it a place, or a never-ending journey?
Is happiness on social media? It sure seems that way. People love sharing perfect pictures online. But going through posts on the Internet sometimes can actually make you feel worse about your life. Because they mislead (误导) people into thinking that others are better off. Is that true? Of course not. A study shows people spending over two hours daily on social media are twice as likely to feel lonely. ▲ .
But what if we’re the ones posting? When we share a happy moment, we get excited, but after a while, we return to feeling the same as before. Happiness only lasts for so long, and when it ends, we set out looking for new happiness. And social media has made this search harder than ever.
Happily, there’s still hope for us to find lasting happiness. This happens when we allow ourselves to feel and deal with emotions like anger, disappointment, fear and sadness. It’s not easy, but when we are honest about our experiences, we build deeper and more meaningful connections with others. And those friendships bring us smiles that last much longer than any number of “likes” on a screen!
March 20th is World Happiness Day. Take it as a reminder that trying to be happy all the time is like trying to catch a unicorn (独角兽)—it’s just not going to happen. Instead, focus on your own journey and accept different emotions you’ll feel along the way.

根据前文“she saw something on fire on the road, so she stopped her car by the road”,Julie停车后自然会靠近查看情况,get closer意为“走近、靠近”, 符合语境。
结合前文“it was late and there was nobody else around”,深夜独自面对起火的事故现场,Julie的情绪应是恐惧的,scared“害怕的”贴合这种心理状态。
前半句“her little daughter was waiting for her at home”是原因,后半句“she wanted to leave”是结果,前后为因果关系,so“所以”用于引出结果,符合逻辑。
gave up“放弃”、took up“占据/开始从事”、learned from“从……
后文提到“Julie pulled the man out of the car”以及“he kept bleeding, so blood was all over his body”,说明伤者伤势严重,badly hurt意为“伤得很重”,符合语境。
后文明确提到“blood was all over his body”,说明伤者持续出血,bleeding“流血”与这一细节完全呼应。
