This was the third fire drill of the year, but students took it seriously. Following the school’s new safety rules in 2025, they covered their mouths and noses with wet cloths—some used handkerchiefs, and others used paper towels (纸巾) from their bags. “Bend down. D
When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him do lots of housework such as taking out the rubbish and sending newspapers. But when he grew up, he was better than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.
This is the finding of a 40-year study following the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who worked hard in childhood had a richer and happier future. Children who worked at home in childhood got more abilities and came to feel they were important members of the society, “said Daniel Brown, the psychologist who made the study.” And because they felt good about themselves, and others felt good about them.
Brown’s study followed these children in great detail. They made the study about the children at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Brown, the researchers compared the children’s mental-health scores with their childhood-activity scores. The children got more points for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
Working hard at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and ability—the underpinnings of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must work together and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live great in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”
48. What do we know about Justin Tong?
A. He enjoyed a happy life. B. He felt sorry for the other kids.
C. He always sold newspapers. D. He hardly took out the rubbish.

A. Children who enjoy happier and richer lives.
B. Children who work at home in childhood.
C. Children who take part in Daniel Brown’s study.
D. Children who feel good about people around them.
50. What does the underlined word “They” refer to in the last paragraph?
A. Responsibility and independence B. Confidence and ability
C. Childhood activities D. Part-time jobs
51. Which best shows the structure of the passage?
A. ①/②③④ B. ①/②/③④ C. ①②③④ D. ①/②③/④
52. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Working is helpful for children’s growth. B. Every child should help work at home.

第1段中介绍“When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him do lots of housework... But when he grew up, he was better than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.”,这说明Justin Tong长大后过上了更幸福健康的生活,所以选项A“He enjoyed a happy life.”正确。
第2段中介绍“Children who worked at home in childhood got more abilities and came to feel they were important members of the society... And because they felt good about themselves, and others felt good about them.”,这说明童年时期在家劳动的孩子未来更可能成功,所以选项B“Children who work at home in childhood.”正确。
最后一段中介绍“Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and ability—the underpinnings of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must work together...”,这里的“They”指代前句的主语“Childhood activities”,所以选项C“Childhood activities.”
A“Working is helpful for children’s growth.”

空格后“You can even offer to take a neighbor’s dog for a walk”暗示先要有外出与人接触的行为。选项F“Instead of checking your phone, go for a walk and chat with someone”直接给出了具体的行动方式,与后文“遛狗”形成递进关系,并列举例说明如何走出去与人交流。
空格前“the Internet can easily bring people with the same interests together”指出互联网的优势,空格后建议“尝试一些安全网站”。选项B“So it is easy to build an online friend community”(所以建立线上朋友社区很容易)承接前文,用“so”引出结果,自然过渡到后文的举例(尝试网站)。
空格前“What subject are they interested in?” A“Find out more about it and discuss it with them”是对该问题的合理回应——先了解兴趣内容,再讨论交流,自然引出“彼此更了解”的结果。
空格前“Helping...will give you a warm feeling and you’ll get to know other volunteers”描述了志愿活动的直接好处。选项E“It’ll also give you something to talk about with friends and family”进一步补充了志愿活动的额外好处——获得社交话题。
空格后“Rather than just suggesting meeting together, carry it out with an exact date and a careful plan”强调计划的重要性。选项D“Everyone’s busy, so getting people together needs a good plan”解释了为什么需要提前计划——因为大家忙,随意邀约难以成功。

This was the third fire drill of the year, but students took it seriously. Following the school’s new safety rules in 2025, they covered their mouths and noses with wet cloths—some used handkerchiefs, and others used paper towels (纸巾) from their bags. “Bend down. Nowadays, more and more teenagers have problems with their mental health. A recent survey shows that about 30% of Grade Eight students feel stressed because of study. Some of them even have sleep problems and don’t want to talk with others.
What causes these problems? First, they have too much homework and too many exams. They have no time for relaxation and exercise. Second, some students don’t know how to get on well with their classmates or family members. Third, many teenagers spend too much time on mobile phones and online games. They don’t have enough sleep and they often feel tired.
How to solve these problems? Here is some advice. First, students should make a plan for study and relaxation. They should finish their homework on time and set aside some time for exercise every day. Second, they should talk with their parents and friends when they feel stressed. Sharing feelings can help them feel better. Third, they should stay away from mobile phones and online games before going to bed. It’s better to read a book or listen to soft music to relax.
Schools and parents also play an important role. Schools should offer more mental health lessons and organize more outdoor activities. Parents should care more about their children’s feelings and not push them too hard in study.
