The mobile phone might be a great gift, but it is stopping young people communicating with the wider world and doing harm to their mental health. Should the young use mobile phones or not? It’s worth deep thinking.
Raleigh International, an adventure programme, has announced that it intends to ban smartphones in order to enable their youthful participants (参与者) to actually get to know each other a bit, instead of spending their evenings under the tent lit by a phone screen.
As people used to say there was a time when the whole point of travel was to come face-to-face with an unfamiliar world. Learning to adapt to that world was “character-building”, and an unfamiliar land was, in a sense, a training ground.
For example, the great twentieth-century explorer Freya Stark was a lone Western woman in far Arab lands without using a GPS and a mobile. Yet through all her years of travelling—and she was someone who travelled even in her 99th year—she learned to measure herself, and she learned to measure those she met.
We live in a time when there are not many people like Freya Stark. For Raleigh International participants, the communal (集体) experience without smartphones is important. A survey during an experiment of its mobile-free policy (政策) found that almost two thirds of them believed their mental health had improved as a result of being without their phones.
Raleigh International said that talking with people face to face leaves good memories on them, because these memories come from responding to the real people and places around them.
Now, going back to the question, it’s clear that with so many smartphones around, we should take advantage of the opportunity for face-to-face communication.
4. What does the underlined word “ban” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Improve the sales of. B. Change the style of.
C. Stop the use of. D. Bring in.
5. Why does the author mention Freya Stark in paragraph 4?
A. To support the author’s opinion. B. To show the uselessness of a GPS.
C. To explain the difficulty of living alone. D. To introduce a new topic for discussion.
6. What is the finding of the experiment about the mobile-free policy?
A. It places more pressure on people. B. It makes people mentally healthier.
C. It leads to more productive work. D. It makes communication difficult.
7. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Why Do the Young Like Mobile Phones?
B. Is It Good for Youth to Use Mobile Phones?
C. What Is the Impact of Mobile Phones on Travel?
D. How Can One Start Face-to-Face Cooperation?
C
The Yellow River is the cradle (摇篮) of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin.
The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices set up along the river collect and transmit information to the command center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions.
One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance (管理) is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped device with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “Upon feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the command center for quick response,” Wang said.
“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiaoxiong from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely, quickly, and accurately.”
And in the sky, drones are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans (泄洪计划) in case we need to batten down the hatches,” said Shen.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligent systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.
8. What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River?
A. To study the wildlife in the Yellow River.
B. To raise public awareness of river protection.
C. To improve flood control and prevention efforts.
D. To provide a virtual reality experience of the river.
9. How do the “smart stones” contribute to the river’s digital governance?
A. They record water quality. B. They enhance the river’s beauty.
C. They monitor and report dike movements. D. They serve as markets for important locations.
10. What is one of the functions of drones in the digital governance of the Yellow River?
A. Providing entertainment for the people living along the river.
B. Collecting data to update a 3D model for flood management.
C. Transporting researchers to remote locations along the river
D. Patrolling and getting first-hand wildlife photos.
11. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. To update the 3D model for accuracy. B. To prepare for a potential flood event.
C. To strengthen the riverbanks and dikes. D. To increase drone monitoring over the river.
12. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. The cultural and historical importance of the Yellow River.
B. The future plans for improving the Yellow River’s construction.
C. The use of smart stones and drones for flood control and monitoring.
D. The development of a digital system for the Yellow River’s management.
Move to the Music
Music helps us exercise, but why does it have this effect? ____13____ The first is simple: Music distracts us. When we listen to a song we like, our brain pays attention to the music. For example, after we exercise for 20 minutes, our body might be tired. But we may not feel this immediately while listening to music. So we exercise a little longer.
Music also motivates us. When we hear dance music, for example, we naturally start to move to the beat. An upbeat song also puts us in a good mood, so we feel happier. This gives us energy and helps us exercise longer. ____14____ Songs in the range of 120-140 beats per minute(BPM)are the best, says sports psychologist Dr. Costas Karageorghis.
____15____. Its leading researcher Fritz put 61 people in small groups. They all then exercised twice. One time, each group worked out while listening to music for six minutes. Another time, they exercised for six minutes on special Jymmin machines. The name Jymmin is a combination of “jamming" and “gym.” Using these machines, each group made music as they moved. The exercisers became the composers and the machines became their instruments. In the end, 53 of the 61 people said the same thing: They felt less tired when they exercised on the Jymmin machines. ____16____
How does Fritz explain this? Maybe people did better on the Jymmin machines because they had more control, he says. People created the beat. They could make it go faster or slower. Also, the activity was social. Each group was making music together and having fun. Fritz believes that Jymmin exercise may have other advantages, too. ____17____ For example, it may be even a good way to treat depression.
A. Experts say there are two main reasons.
B. This also helps relax our body and brain.
C. Music with a quick and steady beat is good for exercising,
D. He wants to find out if it can help with more serious conditions.
E. He expects to take advantage of it to tap into people’s potential.
F. A new study suggests this is only part of the explanation, however.
G. When they exercise and make music, working out seems to be easier.

Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn’t play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no attention to Teddy. However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy’s first grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh.” His second grade teacher wrote that his mother had a deadly illness. His third-grade teacher wrote that his mother’s death had been hard on him. His fourth-grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is withdrawn and doesn’t show much interest in school.”
By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference. When her students brought her Christmas presents, Teddy’s present was clumsily wrapped in heavy brown paper. Mrs. Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a stone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.
Mrs. Thompson, her voice choked up with tears, thanked her students for their presents. And then she showed how she liked Teddy’s presents, putting the bracelet on, and using some of the perfume on her wrist. From then on, Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded and he showed much interest in study. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the excellent children in the class.
Ten years later, Teddy invited Mrs. Thompson to attend his wedding as groom’s mother. She used the bracelet and the perfume which were the presents of that year. At the wedding ceremony, she met the man with good manners. He said to her, “Thank you, Mrs. Thompson.

根据下文“in order to enable their youthful participants (参与者) to actually get to know each other a bit, instead of spending their evenings under the tent lit by a phone screen. (为了让年轻的参与者能够真正地相互了解一点,而不是在电话屏幕照亮的帐篷下度过他们的夜晚)”可知,这个项目为了让参与者互相了解,而非沉迷手机,因此项目会要求参与者停止使用手机,由此推断划线单词的含义是“禁用,停止使用”。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“As people used to say there was a time when the whole point of travel was to come face-to-face with an unfamiliar world. Learning to adapt to that world was “character-building”, and an unfamiliar land was, in a sense, a training ground.(正如人们过去常说的那样,曾经有一段时间,旅行的全部意义就是面对面地面对一个陌生的世界。学习适应那个世界就是“塑造性格”,而在某种意义上,一个陌生的地方就是一个训练场)”和第四段“For example, the great twentieth-century explorer Freya Stark was a lone Western woman in far Arab lands without using a GPS and a mobile. Yet through all her years of travelling—and she was someone who travelled even in her 99th year—she learned to measure herself, and she learned to measure those she met. (例如,20世纪伟大的探险家弗雷娅·斯塔克(Freya Stark)是一个孤独的西方女性,在遥远的阿拉伯土地上,没有使用GPS和手机。然而,在她多年的旅行中——她甚至在99岁时还在旅行——她学会了衡量自己,也学会了衡量她遇到的人)”可知,通过Freya Stark的例子说明没有手机的时代,旅行能促进自我认知和人际理解,即举例的目的是为了支持作者的观点。故选A。
根据第五段“A survey during an experiment of its mobile-free policy (政策) found that almost two thirds of them believed their mental health had improved as a result of being without their phones. (在一项关于无手机政策的实验中,一项调查发现,近三分之二的人认为,由于没有手机,他们的心理健康状况得到了改善)”可知,无手机政策的实验结果是三分之二参与者因不用手机而心理健康得到改善。故选B。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The mobile phone might be a great gift, but it is stopping young people communicating with the wider world and doing harm to their mental health. Should the young use mobile phones or not? It’s worth deep thinking. (手机可能是一个伟大的礼物,但它阻止了年轻人与更广阔的世界交流,并对他们的心理健康造成伤害。年轻人该不该用手机?这是值得深思的)”可知,全文围绕“青少年是否该用手机”展开,先指出现状,再通过案例和实验论证面对面交流的重要性,选项C“Is It Good for Youth to Use Mobile Phones (年轻人使用手机好吗?)?”
