When Mike Coots was 18, he lost his leg to a shark bite. It was near his home on Kauai — a typical fall morning with friends. The waves were really good. Suddenly, a large shark came up under Mike and sank its teeth into Mike’s lower leg. As he struggled, the shark bit down harder. He beat the shark in the face, again and again, until the shark let him go. As Mike swam back to shore, he realized the shark had bitten his lower right leg off. Mike’s friends rushed to his aid. The doctors later told Mike that’s probably what kept him alive during the drive to the hospital.
As soon as Mike was given the OK by his doctors, he started riding the waves again. In fact, his first time back was near the site of his attack. Mike was unshaken. He was curious — why was he attacked?
His curiosity led him to research sharks, and while he never figured out why he became a target, Mike did learn something that would change his life: Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around. “I watched a documentary, and I learned about the fact that 70 million sharks a year are killed for their fins (鳍) alone.”
He began working with the Hawaii state government to help pass a ban on shark-derived products. He also likes using his photos to spread the message about what’s happening to sharks and why it matters. “Sharks are here on earth for a very important reason, holding together the web of biodiversity, and without them, our seas cannot survive.”
5. In the doctors’ opinion, what helped Mike Coots survive?
A. His quick decision to swim back. B. His struggle with the shark.
C. Timely treatment by doctors. D. The help offered by his friends.
6. What does the underlined word “unshaken” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Nervous. B. Determined. C. Excited. D. Panicked.
7. What did Mike Coots do after his recovery?
A. He worked hard to protect sharks.
B. He was curious about many things.
C. He found out why he was attacked.
D. He made documentaries on sharks.
8. Which of the following words can best describe Mike Coots?
A. Curious and humorous. B. Honest and confident.
C. Brave and caring. D. Patient and adventurous.
【答案】5. D 6. B 7. A 8. C

For lots of kids, toddlerhood (幼儿期) is an important time for friendship. Studies show the earlier kids learn to form positive relationships, the better they are at relating to others as teenagers and adults. Playing together also helps these kids practice social behaviors, such as kindness, sharing, and cooperation.
Even so, how quickly your child develops into a social creature may also depend on his temperament (性格). Some toddlers are very social, but others are shy. In addition, the way that toddlers demonstrate that they like other children is obviously different from what adults think of as expressions of friendship. Research at Ohio State University in Columbus found that a toddler’s way of saying “I like you” during play is likely to come in the form of copying a friend’s behavior.
This seemingly unusual way of demonstrating fondness can result in unpleasant behavior. No matter how much they like a playmate, they may still grab his toys, refuse to share, and get bossy. But experts say that this is a normal and necessary part of friendship for kids this age. Through play experiences, toddlers learn social rules. That’s why it’s so important to take an active role in your toddler’s social encounters by setting limits and offering frequent reminders of what they are. When you establish these guidelines, explain the reasons behind them.
Begin by helping your child learn sympathy (“Ben is crying. What’s making him so sad?”), and then suggest how he could resolve the problem (“Maybe he would feel better if you let him play the ball.”). When your child shares or shows empathy (同理心) toward a friend, praise him (“Ben stopped crying! You made him feel better.”).
Another way to encourage healthy social interaction is by encouraging kids to use words — not fists — to express how they feel. It’s also important to be mindful of how your child’s personality affects playtime. Kids are easy to get angry when they’re sleepy or hungry, so schedule playtime when they’re refreshed.
9. What does it indicate when toddlers copy their playmates’ behavior?
A. They want to lead the play.
B. They are too shy to express themselves.
C. They are fond of their playmates.
D. They are competing against each other.
10. What does the author suggest parents do for their kids?
A. Design games for them. B. Find them suitable playmates.
C. Play together with them. D. Help them understand social rules.
11. What is the function of the quoted (引用的) statements in paragraph 4?
A. Giving examples. B. Explaining concepts.
C. Providing evidence. D. Making comparisons.
12. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. How Children Adapt to Changes
B. How to Be a Role Model for Children
C. How Toddlers Learn Social Skills

【12题详解】

Classics are the gems (宝石) of the literary world. For years, people have read them to gain knowledge. But now, an increasing number of people enjoy these classics in online video series.
According to a 2023 report by the Chinese short-video platform Douyin, the views for book-related videos jumped by 65.17 percent year-on-year. As people become busier in competitive social environments, the brief literary explanations provided in short videos enable some to experience stories from a fresh perspective in fleeting (短暂的) moments. “I watch them on the subway, in a queue or before bed. Short videos combine text, images and expressions, providing a better experience than just reading text alone,” a man surnamed Yang told Xinhua.
The fearsome length and complexity (复杂性) of classics are also reasons why some people, especially teenagers, are turning to literature vloggers (video bloggers) for help. A Dream of Red Mansions is well-known for its detailed description of Chinese society, colorful characters and poetic language. It explores themes like family, society and human nature. However, these very qualities make the novel challenging for some students, who find it boring or even sleep-inducing (困倦的). “There are so many characters in the novel, which confused me a lot,” said 12-year-old Shao Xinyan from Hubei. “Some vloggers use a mind map to clearly show their relationship.”
While reading with videos helps many people, some express different opinions and concerns. For Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing, reading is a journey in which people form a personal connection with the text, not just absorbing facts. “Books that inspire my imagination, like fantasy adventures and historical stories, demand a deeper connection. Videos, although convenient, can’t fully present the small details of a well-written story,” said Zhang. Wang Hongjie, an 18-year-old girl, from Sichuan agreed, saying, “It may decrease readers’ ability to read independently and think deeply.”
13. Why do more people turn to short videos for classic literature?
A. Short videos save time and offer a better reading experience.
B. Classic books are often too out-of-date to be popular.
C. They’re not interested in reading independently.
D. Video platforms provide more book-related content.
14. What makes A Dream of Red Mansions challenging for some students?
A. Its detailed descriptions and social qualities.
B. Its focus on ancient social culture in China.
C. Its elegant language and various characters.
D. Its unique writing features and target readers.
15. What can be inferred about Wang Hongjie from the last paragraph?
A. She thinks videos help readers understand classics better.
B. She disagrees with Zhang Boren’s opinion on videos.
C. She suggests readers watch videos for a deeper connection.
D. She believes reading independently is a skill worth keeping.
16. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. “Update” the Videos B. “Watch” the Classics
C. “Read” Literature D. “Play” with Vlog
【答案】13. A 14. C 15. D 16. B
【解析】

【14题详解】

【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Wang Hongjie, an 18-year-old girl, from Sichuan agreed, saying, “It may decrease readers’ ability to read independently and think deeply.”(来自四川的18岁女孩王红洁也表示同意,她说:“这可能会降低读者独立阅读和深入思考的能力。”)”可推知,王红洁认为独立阅读是一项值得保持的技能。

The search for beauty lasts centuries and goes across continents. Paintings of Egyptians, dating back over 4,000 years, show both men and women painting their nails and wearing makeup. In 18th-century France, wealthy noblemen wore large wigs (假发) of long, white hair to make themselves attractive. Today, people continue to devote a lot of time and money to their appearance.
There is at least one good reason for the desire to be attractive: beauty is power. Studies suggest that good-looking people make more money, get called on more often in class, and are regarded as friendlier.
But what exactly is beauty? It’s difficult to describe it clearly, and yet we know it when we see it. And our awareness of it may start at a very early age. In one set of studies, six-month-old babies were shown a series of photographs. The faces on the pictures had been rated for attractiveness by a group of college students. In the studies, the babies spent more time looking at the attractive faces than the unattractive ones.
The idea that even babies can judge appearance makes perfect sense to many researchers. In studies by psychologists, men consistently showed a preference for women with larger eyes, fuller lips, and a smaller nose and chin while women prefer men with large shoulders and a narrow waist. According to scientists, the mind unconsciously tells men and women that these traits — the full lips, clear skin, strong shoulders — equal health and genetic well-being.
Not everyone thinks the same way. What is considered attractive in one culture might not be in another. Look at most Western fashion magazines: the women on the pages are thin, but is this “perfect” body type for women worldwide? Scientists’ answer is no; what is considered beautiful is subjective and varies around the world. They found native peoples in southeast Peru preferred shapes regarded overweight in Western cultures.
For better or worse, beauty plays a role in our lives. But it is extremely difficult to describe exactly what makes one person attractive to another. Although there do seem to be certain physical traits considered universally appealing, it is also true that beauty does not always keep to a single, uniform standard. Beauty really is, as the saying goes, in the eye of the beholder (观看者).
17. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To demonstrate the idea of beauty has changed over time.
B. To argue beauty standards vary across different cultures.
C. To show the desire to look good is common across time and place.
D. To describe different ways people have to make themselves attractive.
18. In paragraph 3, the babies in the study _______.
A. were rated for their appearance B. preferred women with larger eyes
C. were shown photos of college students D. could tell attractive and unattractive faces apart
19. We can learn from the passage that _______.
A. the standards of beauty vary as people grow up
B. the search for beauty makes people powerful
C. the standards for beauty come from scientific researches alone
D. the understanding of beauty is rooted in cultural backgrounds
20. What can be a suitable title for the text?

C. The Varieties of Beauty D. The History of Beauty

18. In paragraph 3, the babies in the study _______.
