How to Use a Modern Public Library
Has it been a while since your last visit to a public library? If so, you may be surprised to learn that libraries have changed for the better. It’s been years since they were dusty little rooms with books. They have transformed themselves into places where you can develop your love of knowledge, meet interesting people, or find out how to start a business.
Check out a book. While libraries still loan out (出借) books, you’ll find it easier to get a copy of whatever you’re looking for, thanks to a cooperative network of area libraries. Via such networks, libraries share their books with each other through the use of delivery vehicles. Once the book you’ve requested is delivered to the nearest branch, they will inform you by e-mail, so you can pick it up.
Check out other items. The library is now a multimedia zone, loaded with information in many formats You can borrow movies on DVDs, music on CDs, and popular magazines. Some libraries even loan out toys and games. If a popular magazine you want isn’t offered and the library keeps a list of such requests, they may bring it in when enough interest is shown.
Join targeted reading groups. Libraries will often hold reading-group sessions targeted to various age groups. Perhaps you’d like to learn a language or improve your English. The library may sponsor a language group you could join. If you have difficulties reading, ask about special reading opportunities. Your library might be able to accommodate you. And you might find it relaxing to bring your small kid to a half-hour Story Time while you sit quietly in a corner with a good book.
Start a business using the help of your local library. If you want to have a business of your own, your local library can become a launch space for it. In library books and computers, you can find information on starting a business. Many libraries will help you with locally supplied information about business management shared through chambers of commerce (商会) and government agencies, and they will offer printing, faxing and database services you need.
36. Public libraries connected by a cooperative network benefit readers by______.
A. sharing their books on the Internet B. giving access to online reading at a library branch
C. sending a needed book to a library branch nearby D. making the checkout procedures diverse
37. According to Paragraph 3, what items may be checked out from a public library?
A. A magazine and an e-book. B. A music CD and a kid’s toy.
C. A game and an oil painting. D. A DVD and a video player.
38. As is described in Paragraph 4, taking a small kid to a half-hour Story Time allows ______.
A. the kid to learn a new language B. the parent to enjoy quiet reading
C. the kid to overcome reading difficulties D. the parent to meet their program sponsor
39. Your local library can help you start a business by ______.
A. arranging meetings with government officials
B. offering professional advice on business management
C. supplying useful information of your potential buyers
D. providing relevant information and supporting services
40. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To point out the importance of public libraries.
B. To encourage people to work in public libraries.
C. To introduce the improved services of public libraries.
D. To call for the modernization of public library systems.

At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me clearly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and gave up my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby improving your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably straightforward comments on me. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke (笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must imagine the word as it is to be written and leave a little bit of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural limits. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is flat, it carries rich meaning, showing the strength you’ve applied, the energy of your hold, the curve of your back.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your thoughts, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
41. What did the author think of her name “Chen Yiwen” at first?
A. It was lucky so she gladly accepted it.
B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C. She thought the characters were beautiful.
D. She understood the intention but still disliked it.
42. The author decided to learn calligraphy to ________.
A. protect cultural heritage B. understand a new culture
C. reconnect with her roots D. fit in with local community
43. What did the author find difficult when learning calligraphy?
A. Copying the old masters’techniques exactly.
B. Accepting and understanding her real cultural identity.
C. Writing with confidence and bold strokes.
D. Understanding her teacher’s straight comments.
44. From the teacher’s words, the author learns that calligraphy ________.
A. mirrors the creator’s spirits
B. comes from creative energy
C. highlights the design of strokes
D. depends on continuous practice
45. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Fortune favors the bold.
B. Accept who you truly are.
C. A great teacher leads you to truth.
D. Planning is good, but doing is better.
C
Many parents worry that showing negative emotions in front of their children will cause them to suffer. For example, children may end up thinking it's their fault or simply "catch" the emotion. Indeed, this worry has a sound basis — the phenomenon of “emotional contagion"(情绪感染)is real, and one recent study found that parents can transfer their fear of going to the dentist, for example, to their children.
On the other hand, there is the natural idea that we should “be real" with our children, and that they will benefit from watching a parent who struggles and eventually deals with their negative emotions like any other human being.
There are three concepts to consider when it comes to emotional display in front of children: suppression (压抑),"uncontained" expression, and talking about emotions. Suppression of emotion is when you hide the outward signs of an emotion. Unfortunately, it doesn't work very well — the act of suppressing your emotion actually increases your blood pressure. Observers can pick up on your distress despite your efforts to hide it, making them feel stressed. The recent research has also found that when parents feel negative emotions and keep them from their children, they experience lower relationship quality and decreased responsiveness to their child's needs.
On the other hand, “uncontained" expression of anger and sadness by the parent is also not salutary for the child. Uncontained means high intensity emotion, with no attempts to regulate or take ownership of it. Shouting, smashing (摔)things and blaming someone else for "making you angry" are all example of this .
So, what is the middle ground? That would be talking about emotion taking ownership of them and showing your child that you are trying to deal with them. Classic research found that six-year-old kids had better emotional understanding and perspective-taking skills if their mothers had talked to them about their emotions at the age of three. In fact, the more the mothers had talked, the better the outcome would be.
So next time you feel sad, angry or frustrated and your child is watching you expressing emotion, do explain what's going on in terms they can understand.
46. The author uses the example of going to the dentist mainly to _______.
A. explain parents' common fear
B. introduce the topic of negative emotions
C. show children may catch parents' emotions
D. present the consequences of transferring negative emotions
47. If a mother suppresses ((压抑))her emotions, .
A. she will not make her kids feel stressed
B. she can hide her emotions from her kids
C. she will often shout at her kids for no reasons
D. she can't respond effectively to her kids' needs
48. What does the underlined word "salutary" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Enough. B. Beneficial.
C. Necessary. D. Reliable.
49. What is the author's intention of writing this text?
A. To encourage parents to "be real" with our children.
B. To call on parents to develop a positive attitude to life.
C. To inform parents of the consequences of negative emotions.
D. To recommend parents to talk about negative emotions with children.
50. What's the structure of the text?
A. B.
C. D.
My family had moved into a new house with big back yard. For some time, my older brother and I had been expecting a family pet. Finally, we managed to persuade our parents that the time had come for keeping one.
Though my brother and I were of like minds about the goal of having a family member, what exactly it meant to each of us was entirely different. I was excited and happy when my parents brought home the dog, Snoopy. Despite the fun of playing with him,I knew it was really more my brother’s pet than mine. I really, really wanted a cat! I tried to show my joy for getting a pet while trying to hide my disappointment that he wasn’t a cat. My parents must have known how I was feeling because they suggested that I could make a wish about it.
Running to my bedroom, I made a wish sincerely that I would have a cat. Not more than a minute or two passed when I heard a faint scratching sound(轻微的抓挠声) coming from the front door. Curious, I stood up, approaching the open front door. There, sitting calmly before me was a large, white cat.
I was absolutely amazed! I went close to the white cat, and it began walking towards me. I gathered his mass into my arms and then I went into the back yard where my parents and brother were playing with Snoopy. So, Snowball joined our household that day, too.
Although my parents always denied having anything to do with Snowball's arrival, I guessed they might have. However, even if they did somehow arrange for him to appear at the front door at the very moment when I was making a wish for a cat, it would not reduce the miracle of a cat doing in my life.

D 42. C 43. C 44. A 45. B

As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.

I can see the choices you made, your thoughts, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”

A. B.
C. D.

Indeed, this worry has a sound basis — the phenomenon of “emotional contagion"(情绪感染)is real, and one recent study found that parents can transfer their fear of going to the dentist, for example, to their children.( 事实上,这种担心有坚实的基础——“情绪传染”现象是真实的,最近的一项研究发现,例如,父母可以把他们去看牙医的恐惧转移给孩子。)可推断,作者使用看牙医的例子是为了说明孩子可以感染父母的情绪。故选C。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的Suppression of emotion is when you hide the outward signs of an emotion. Unfortunately, it doesn't work very well — the act of suppressing your emotion actually increases your blood pressure.
Uncontained means high intensity emotion, with no attempts to regulate or take ownership of it. Shouting, smashing (摔)things and blaming someone else for "making you angry" are all example of this .( 不包含意味着强烈的情绪,没有试图调整或拥有它。
So next time you feel sad, angry or frustrated and your child is watching you expressing emotion, do explain what's going on in terms they can understand.
Uncontained means high intensity emotion, with no attempts to regulate or take ownership of it. Shouting, smashing (摔)things and blaming someone else for "making you angry" are all example of this .( 不包含意味着强烈的情绪,没有试图调整或拥有它。

I’m Li Jin, a Senior 1 student from Chenguang Middle School.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I’m Li Jin, a Senior 1 student from Chenguang Middle School. I think this topic is very meaningful. As teenagers, we can also make a difference to the world with our own efforts.
There are many things we can do. To begin with, we should always keep a kind and warm heart. Reach out to the elderly, help classmates in trouble, and volunteer in community services. A simple smile or a helping hand can light up someone’s life. Moreover, protecting our planet is our shared responsibility. We can save electricity, sort rubbish properly, plant more trees, and say no to single-use plastics. Living a green lifestyle helps build a cleaner and healthier world. Most importantly, what counts most is that we must value our time at school and study hard. By gaining knowledge, developing skills and building a strong sense of responsibility, we will be well prepared to contribute to society and our motherland in the future.
In fact, every small effort counts. No act of kindness is too small, and no step of progress is too tiny. Let’s take action right now, start from daily life, and keep moving forward. Together, we can make the world warmer, more beautiful and more hopeful.
