If you feel stressed at school, what can you do to make yourself happy? Some may eat their favourite food or listen to music. Others may go for a walk or get some exercise. A new study found another great way to lower students’ stress—playing with dogs.
Scientists studied 105 students between the ages of eight and nine. 35 trained dogs and their trainers also took part in the study. The children were divided into three groups. The students in the first group spent 20 minutes with a dog and its trainer. They watched the trained dogs perform and even played with them. They did this twice a week for four weeks. The second group spent the same amount of time doing exercise to relax. The last group did neither of these things.
During this time, the scientists recorded the students’ cortisol levels (皮质醇水平) . Cortisol is a stress hormone (激素) . The more stressed you feel, the more cortisol you will have in your body. What did the scientists find? Both the second and third groups showed rises in cortisol levels. The first group, however, showed no big increase. And the children in this group had the lowest cortisol levels right after playing with the dogs.
According to the study, students enjoy playing with dogs and it helps them become happier. The stress hormone falls over time this way, which is good for students’ health. But the next question is: Is 20 minutes of playtime with a dog the best amount of time? Scientists plan to continue researching to find the answer.

Officer Stine said, “Steven is a very brave boy. I’ll try to ask him to work for us later because we need brave people like him.” Steven’s mother, Emma, explained, “Kids learn about fire safety at school and know how to act carefully. A little stream (小溪) ran down from a high mountain far, far away through many villages and forests, until it reached a desert. The stream then thought, “I’ve been through countless difficulties. I should have no trouble crossing the desert!” But as she started her journey, she found herself slowly disappearing into the sand. After many tries, she still failed and was very unhappy. “Maybe I can’t reach the ocean in the end,” she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice came, “If a breeze (微风) can cross the desert, then so can a river.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream replied, “That’s because a breeze can fly, but I cannot.” “That’s because you can’t give up what you are. If you would like to do it, and let yourself evaporate (蒸发) into the breeze, it can take you across, and you can reach the ocean,” said the desert.
“Give up what I am now and disappear into the breeze? No! No!” The little stream could not accept this idea.
After all, she had never experienced anything like it before.
“The breeze can carry the vapor (水蒸气) across the desert and let it fall as rain. The rain will form a river again to continue its journey,” explained the desert very patiently. “And whether you are a river or vapor, your nature never changes,” continued the desert.
