For most of my life,I treated taste as fixed. There were things I liked and things I didn't,
and that was that.
Sticking to that belief had left me in a bit of a standstill.I stopped making time for new
hobbies or trying anything new.Salsa lessons?No,thanks.Interactive theatre?Not for me.But
my automatic"no"to anything that "wasn't my thing"'only kept me trapped in the same routine
of work, sleep, eating, and that left me feeling listless and a little empty.
So,in an effort to break the boredom,I began to question whether my taste was fixed at
all,or whether it might be something I could train.I had read that children need 8 to 15 tries to
accept a new food. Why shouldn't the same principle apply to social activities for adults?
I started small. When a friend invited me to a book club,I resisted the urge to dismiss it,
despite my longstanding dislike of reading due to dyslexia(阅读障a碍症).But I went anyway..
I listened to the first book on audio book and,to my surprise, enjoyed the discussion and the
people.Now I spend mornings reading.Then came musie and performance:jazz clubs,line
dancing,contemporary performance-all things I had previously ignored.
Trying things you thought you wouldn't enjoy,I found,became oddly addictive.I didn't
love everything straight away, but I stopped saying no before I had even begun. Most recently,
I tried out my local library's chess club.I was easily 30 years younger than everyone else, but
that didn't matter.Honestly, there was nothing quite like being wiped off the board by someone
who had been playing since before your parents met.I felt more of a connection with others
there than at any organized twenty-something social event I've attended.
Putting "try something new"in my diary once a week broke up the work-commute-
collapse cycle I had accidentally built my life around. Now I simply count to five, approach the
friendliest-looking person with a"hello",and any initial awkwardness quickly fades.Next week?
Who knows.Maybe magie-lessons.Maybe life drawing.Maybe both.

"Then would you invest short-term or long-term?"asks Jennifer Varga,a teacher at
Memorial Middle School in New Jersey.
Personal-finance courses targeted at pupils are being popularized across America,
promoted by rules requiring such instruction.Since 2020,17 states have adopted laws that make
taking a financial course necessary for completing high school, bringing the total up to 25.That
figure will probably grow.
Pupils in these classes learn not only how to save their earnings in order to have something
to invest in the first place, but simple economic problems.Courses cover comparison shopping
and the basics of how to properly bank, budget, handle credit and pay for college.Young people
badly need these courses.
Few teenagers score highly on financial knowledge assessments. Are personal-finance
courses the answer?For a long time,the studies said no.Many analyses,including one cited
over 2,500 times, claimed that financial courses were of no avail. The analyses made intuitive
(sense,as many teenagers have yet to work or manage a household. But more recent
findings have shown an opposite picture.Research has gotten better and the courses themselves
have also improved.Studies that use the gold standard of investigation have found the courses
are working well and useful in improving financial knowledge and behaviour.
The newest survey conducted in 33 countries found people who take these courses learn
the content and budget better. And pupils who take personal-finance courses borrow less money.
If they do borrow for college, they choose low-cost options. Some worry about adding one more
graduation requirement to the long list, but schools are willing to remove courses with less
direct bearing on life skills."When I was 20,it would have been nice to have this class,"Ms
Varga says. She got into some financial trouble as a young adult."I want them to be better than
my generation.”
8 What fuels the spread of personal-finance courses?
A.A major demand from schools.
B.The unsteadiness of finance.
C.A new requirement for graduation.

9.What can students learn in personal-financial courses?
A.Long-term investment.
B.Daily finance management.

D.Policies on financial development.
10 What does the underlined phrase"of no avail"mean in paragraph 4?
A.Unfamiliar.
B.Unsystematic.
C.Inaccessible.
D.Ineffective.
11.What do the survey results imply?
A The courses have lasting value.
B.More attention is needed to finance.
C.Fewer students borrow for college.
D.The graduation standards are high.

New technologies tend to cause a cycle of concern, disorder, and conflict before eventually
being accepted.Recent writings about artificial intelligence (AI)and other advances in
computer science suggest that we are preparing to welcome the final stage of this latest round
of invention.
The Last Human Job,sociologist Allison Pugh's new book centered on caregiving and
human connection in the age of automation, warns readers against unreserved acceptance of
these technological advances, citing"connective labor"as valuable human work that will not
be easily replaced by algorithms(算法).“Absent from discussions about Al and automation,”
Pugh argues,"is the impact that these systems might have on the emotional understandings we
build of ourselves and others."
Pugh sets the stage by arguing for the value of human connection and the importance of
both seeing and being seen by others.“Practitioners(从业者)said they gained a sense of
purpose simply from the opportunity of observing people at their most defenseless,"she
observes. She then provides a summary of how care work is being increasingly automated,
showing how quantification and measurement have taken over many aspects of human-facing
jobs, leaving little room for doctors, teachers, and others to build connection.
"When one goes to a doctor or a teacher, the encounter is full of the potential for shame,a
risk that makes it all the more powerful when practitioners show empathic(同理心的)
reflection,"writes Pugh.In chapter 8,she explains how such interactions can be done right.
Research conducted by herself and others identifies three key aspects supporting connective
labor:"relational design,"or how people are set up to interact with one another;"connective
culture,"or shared practices and beliefs that influence how people interact;and "resource
distribution,"which includes time given for interaction,worker-to-client rates, and the extent
of technology and data use, among other factors.
Pugh concludes by arguing that we need a social movement for connection."We need to
fight for what we might call our 'social health',"she maintains.
2.What is the main concern of Allison Pugh's new book?
A.The impact of AI on future employment.
B.The approach to living and working with AI.
C.The increasing role of technology in caregiving.
D.The value of connective labor in the age of automation.
13.Why does the author mention "practitioners"in paragraph 3?
A To explain how to do care work.
B.To argue against the automation technology
C.To prove the significance of human connection.
D.Te discuss the challenges of privacy in caregiving.
14 What does the underlined word"it"in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The encounter.
B.The shame.
C.The risk.
D.The potential.
5.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A The overview of chapter 8.
B.The effective way to interact.
C.The new trend of caregiving.
D.The factors of avoiding shame.

二、七选五供5小题,每小题25分,满分12.5分)
Many of us set goals, but sometimes we fail to achieve them. There are many causes why
we don't manage to realize our goals.
There is a way, though,to help address this
problem:set reminders.People employ a psychological strategy called cognitive (
offloading, where we use a physical action to reduce demands on our brain.Specifically,we
may outsource our intentions from being storea in our brains to reminders outside our head.
1
Understanding the benefits of cognitive offloading can improve our ability to remember
and follow through with our intentions. The biggest benefit is simply that it improves memory
performance. It increases the probability that we will work towards the goals we need to reach.
18 "The more we offload unimportant information, such as items on a shopping list, the
more we can use our brain for those more significant cognitive tasks, such as creativity,"said
Sam Gilbert.professor at the University College London.
19Still,there are potential negative parts for it.We are more likely to forget what
we offloaded if we no longer access our storage, such as when our smartphone dies.We also
tend to offload the important things we most want to remember. In a surprise test where their
reminders were wiped clean, the participants were more likely to forget the important items and
recall the unimportant ones, that is,the more important the intention we want to remember, the
more likely we are to offload it-and to forget it.
We'd better tend to create reminders when we think we need them, but not necessarily
when we do need them.
If our understanding of our memory ability is wrong, this
suggests that we will either overuse or underuse reminders,"Gilbert said."We can learn by
noticing the times that we have forgotten to do something and could have used reminders to
help.”
A.Cognitive offloading has noticeable benefits.
B.One common reason is that we simply forget them
C.Besides,it can free up our fimited cognitive resources.
D.A good example can be documents on our smartphone calendars.
B.The process of cognitive offloading helps us identify false information.
F.Our beliefs about how good our memory is directly intluence whether we set them
G.Other experts say it's too soon to understand how cognitive offloading affects our brains.
