This is a story about love, hope, and friendship.
In November 2025, an 8-year-old boy, Liu, got badly hurt in a car accident. He suffered a serious brain injury and went into a coma (昏迷). Doctors were not hopeful that he would get better.
Liu's mother refused to give up on him. When she heard some doctors say familiar sounds might help, she started playing recordings of his school bell and morning exercise music for her son. Liu's teacher also organised his classmates to make videos for him. In the videos, children call out Liu's name, share classroom jokes, and sing his favourite songs. "Please wake up. We miss you," the children all say.
Liu's mother played these videos again and again.
After weeks of silence, something amazing happened. On the 45th day, Liu opened his eyes for the first time. Then, on the 51st day, he smiled with his eyes closed when he heard a recording of his teacher's lesson! That moment filled his family with joy and hope. Finally, on the 55th day, Liu woke up! His teacher rushed to tell his classmates the good news. Everyone cheered and celebrated.

①Teaching children to help others is one of the most valuable lessons. Why?
②Encouraging children to help others can make them kind and empathetic (有同理心的). So they are good at understanding and cooperating with others. As a result, they are more likely to build stronger and more meaningful relationships. When children help others, they can also develop a sense of achievement and responsibility. This encourages them to be helpful.
3) There are many ways to get children to practise kindness. They can start learning to help at home by doing chores. For example, after finishing the meal, they can be asked to help clean up the table. It teaches them that being part of a family means sharing responsibilities.
④Schools also provide children with the chance to help their peers in various ways. They can help by sharing stationery (文具), offering learning support, or simply by inviting a classmate to join in a game. The acts of kindness help them build friendships.
⑤What's more, it is necessary to teach children to care for the environment. Encourage them to do little things, such as picking up plastic bottles in parks, planting trees, or saving water. And tell them that they can also help by spreading ideas on green living. For example, they can start a conversation about reducing waste with their friends. @In short, when children learn to help, they first become better people themselves. Then, through their actions, they can make the whole world a better place.
( )23. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. What children can gain from helping others.
B. How children learn to cooperate with others.
C. Why it is necessary to build good relationships.
D. Where children can practise kindness in everyday life.
( )24. Why does the writer suggest children first learn to help with chores?
A. They can improve their life skills by doing chores.
B. They will feel a strong sense of achievement.
C. It teaches them to be helpful and responsible.
D. It is a good way to make their parents happy.
25. What does the underlined word "various" most probably mean?
A. Different. B. Interesting. C. Special. D. Strange.
( )26. How is the text organised?
A. B. C. D.
D
We all make mistakes in our daily lives. For example, we may break a classmate's favourite cup by accident. Or we may say something impolite when arguing with a friend. In such situations, it's important to know how to say sorry and repair the relationship in time. But how do you make sure your apology (道歉) sounds sincere (真诚的)? Well, a recent finding shows that people are more willing to accept apologies using more words.
Not long ago, Shiri Lev-Ari, a professor from the University of London, did two studies about making apologies. In the first one, she searched for 50 apologetic posts online. Then she compared these posts to normal posts written by the same people. She found that their apologetic posts were far longer than the normal ones. However, the words used in apologies were as common as those in the other posts. They weren't unusual or difficult to understand.
In the second study, Lev-Ari asked 49 volunteers to read three different versions (说法) of the same apologetic sentence. The three versions had the same meaning, but they differed in length (长度). The volunteers all agreed the longest sentence sounded the most apologetic. "An apology seems to be more sincere if it takes more effort to say it. When you use more words, it looks like you've put more thought into the apology," said Lev-Ari.
In future studies, Lev-Ari hopes to find if using big words will help. She also wonders if saying sorry face-to-face is better than sending an apologetic message. For now, a sincere apology with enough words is a good way to say sorry.
( )27. How does the writer start the text?
A. By asking questions.
B. By using sayings.
C. By giving examples.
D. By offering numbers.
( )28. What do we know about the two studies?
A. A professor from a British university did them.
B. They are about people's opinions on apologies.
C. Fifty volunteers took part in the second study.
D. The first study shows making apologies online is useless.
( )29. What may Lev-Ari agree with?
A. People had better show their efforts in apologies.
B. Sentences with fewer words are more apologetic.
C. People should use unusual words when saying sorry.
D. The two studies have shown completely different results.
( )30. What is the best title for the text?
A. The power of simple words
B. The importance of saying sorry
C. Making apologies - the sooner, the better
D. More words, more sincerity in "sorry"
