I was scared of flying. Not just a little. Whenever I got on a plane, I was scared to death. I couldn’t move forward. I used to cry on planes. More than once. The fear wasn’t reasonable, but it was not something I was in control of either. I read about a virtual reality (VR,虚拟现实)therapy that helped people like me, so I decided to try it.
STEP 1: GET A REAL DOCTOR
If you want to try this therapy, you’ll need a doctor. That part is real, not virtual! During my therapeutic sessions (治疗期), however, we spent a lot of time in the virtual world.
STEP 2: PANIC
The first time I put on VR glasses, I was surprised by how my body reacted (起反应). When you’re in a VR environment, your mind can’t tell what’s real or not real. Just in a few minutes, I was in great panic. My heart beat (规律作响) really fast. And it was difficult for me to breathe. The doctor taught me how to be in control of myself again by using a breathing skill.
STEP 3: REPEAT
At my first session, my fear level (水平) was especially high. There was still a lot of fear the second time, but I felt much better than before. With careful breathing, I calmed down. By my third session, I felt almost relaxed.
STEP 4: FLY
Noise rising and ground disappearing — and all without the fear. I still felt nervous — a real plane is stronger than a VR plane, but I got over my fear. The VR therapy worked! I may even take flying lessons if the therapy continues to work so well.
( )23. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. A plane.
B. The writer’s body.
C. The fear.
D. The VR therapy.
( )24. How did the writer’s body react when she put on VR glasses the first time?
A. She cried out right away.
B. She couldn’t move forward.
C. She felt difficult to breathe.
D. Her heart stopped beating.
( )25. What does the writer think of the VR therapy?
A. Challenging. B. Hopeful.
C. Creative.
D. Boring.
( )26. Why does the writer write this text?
A. To tell us why she is scared of flying.
B. To show how to be in control of oneself.
C. To encourage people to take a plane.
D. To show us her experience of the VR therapy.

① PUA means “Pick-up Artist”. It started for people who used clever ways to influence their interactions (交流) with others, especially between lovers. This idea develops, and now it also means people use tricks to control others in the workplace (工作场所) and online. It’s very helpful to know about PUA because it can deeply influence how you feel about your self-improvement. Here are some common actions to be careful of.
② Sometimes people who use PUA tricks criticize a lot. One of the tricks is that they might tell you that you’re always doing things wrong. It is just a way to make you feel sorry about yourself instead of helping you improve. They may also try to keep you away from your friends and family. This makes you depend on them, and gives them more control over you.
③Another trick is called gaslighting(煤气灯效应). For example, you remember something clearly, but they keep saying it didn’t happen. They hope you aren’t sure what you know is true.
④ To avoid PUA, there are several steps you can take. First, learn to tell what healthy friendships and relationships look like. Being confident is also important because it will be not so easy for others to trick you. Besides, you shouldn’t be scared to say no when something feels wrong. What’s more, talking to someone you trust like a teacher can be very useful.
⑤ Knowing these signs and how to deal with them can help you have better relationships. It’s like building a strong foundation (基础) for happy and healthy relationships as you get older.
( )27. Which of the following sentences shows the underlined word “criticize”?
A. If you have any problems, you can ask me for help.
B. Sorry, it didn’t happen. I think you didn’t remember well.
C. You are always making mistakes! What you do is wrong!
D. Keep away from your friend, or you will become a bad student too.
( )28. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Steps to use PUA to control others.
B. Reasons for why students can’t use PUA.
C. Ways to build a healthy relationship.
D. Advice on how to avoid PUA.
( )29. What is TRUE about PUA?
A. PUA only happens between lovers.
B. People may use PUA to control others in workplace and online.
C. PUA can help you have better relationships when you get older.
D. PUA will influence what other people think of you.
( )30. Which of the following shows the structure of the text?
