Peer pressure feels like a giant wave. Most people think they must be “superheroes” to stand against it. They try to fight the whole group alone. However, science shows a much easier way to stay strong. It is called the “Ally Effect.”
Many years ago, a scientist named Solomon Asch did a famous test. He put one student in a room with a group of actors. The actors all gave the wrong answer to a simple question. Most of the time, the student followed the group and gave the wrong answer too. They didn’t want to be different.
But then, the scientist changed one thing. He told one actor to give the correct answer. Suddenly, the student felt much braver. When the student had just one “ally” (a person on their side), they stopped following the group. The pressure to fit in dropped by nearly 80%.
What does this mean for you? You do not need to change the whole group’s mind. You only need to find one other person who feels the same way. In a tough situation, look around. Usually, there is another person who looks uncomfortable or quiet. They are waiting for a leader.
If you speak up first, that person will likely join you. Once there are two of you, the “spell” (魔咒) of the group disappears. You are no longer an outsider; you are a team. Strength is not about having big muscles (肌肉). It is about finding your “Number Two.”
4. The writer uses the experiment of Solomon Asch to ________.
A. explain what the Ally Effect is
B. show how people give wrong answers
C. teach students how to do scientific tests
D. tell students to work with famous scientists
5. What does the underlined word “tough” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Difficult. B. Easy. C. Boring. D. Strange.
6. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Peer pressure is like a large wave.
B. A great team needs many strong members.
C. People always follow the group in a test.
D. Finding an ally can help you fight peer pressure.

第二段提到“Many years ago, a scientist named Solomon Asch did a famous test.”
第四段提到“In a tough situation, look around. Usually, there is another person who looks uncomfortable or quiet.”,结合语境,在这种让人不舒服、安静的状况下,通常意味着情况不太好,结合选项可知“tough”意思是“困难的”,与“Difficult”意思相符。

Last month, our school held a basketball competition for Grade 8. My class and Class 5 made it to the final. Everyone was excited to show their team spirit.
Our star player was Li Hao. He was tall and scored many points in every game. However, something unexpected happened. On the morning of the final, Li Hao hurt his leg. The doctor said he couldn’t play. We felt very upset and even thought about giving up.
Then, our coach, Mr. Zhang, told us: “A great team is not about one star player. It’s about everyone working together.” His words woke us up. We decided to fight for the team, not just the championship
We quickly changed our plan. Instead of passing only to one person, we passed the ball to whoever was in a good position (位置). Wang Yu guarded (盯防) the other team’s best player, and Zhang Qiang ran harder than ever. I tried my best as a guard (后卫) to pass well. We all worked hard together.
The game was very close. In the last 30 seconds, the score was 45-45. The gym was quiet. I got the ball and passed it to Zhang Qiang. He jumped high and shot. The ball went into the basket! We won!
That day, I learned the true meaning of teamwork. It means using everyone’s strengths and never giving up. This lesson is something I will never forget.
7. Why did the class feel upset at first?
A. Because they didn’t get to the final.
B. Because their best player couldn’t play.
C. Because the coach was strict with them.
D. Because the other class was too strong.
8. Put the following events in the correct order.
① The team changed the game plan.
② Li Hao hurt his leg.
③ The team won the competition.
④ The coach gave them encouragement.
A. ②①④③ B. ②④①③ C. ④②①③ D. ①②④③
9. What made the writer’s class win the game at last?
A. Their good luck. B. Their star player’s help.
C. Their teamwork. D. Their high skills.
10. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Be a Good Team Player?
B. Who is the Star Player in My Class?
C. A Terrible Basketball Final
D. The Importance of Teamwork
B 8. B 9. C 10. D

最后一段提到:“That day, I learned the true meaning of teamwork. It means using everyone’s strengths and never giving up.”
