阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Are we alone? What’s out there? Since ancient times, people have looked at the stars with wonder. Now that space technology is developing fast, scientists design advanced vehicles 1 (carry)astronauts into space so they can make important discoveries.
Before the mid-20th century, most people thought 2 space travel was nothing more than an impossible dream. Though ordinary people doubted it, scientists were determined to turn the dream into reality. After they 3 (conduct)years of experiments, they finally built rockets powerful enough to escape Earth’s gravity. When 4 October 1957 came, the USSR launched Sputnik 1, the 4 (one)satellite to orbit Earth successfully. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space. Eight years later, Neil Armstrong 5 (step)onto the moon and remarked that it was “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Voyager 1 6 (send)study deep space in 1977, and it still transmits data to Earth today. Since 1998, the International Space Station has provided a home 7 astronauts from many countries.
Space exploration has seen bitter tragedies because several space crews lost 8 (they)lives in the Challenger and Columbia disasters. Even though exploration is full of dangers, the human desire to explore never faded. China started its space programme later, yet it has achieved rapid 9 (breakthrough): Yang Liwei completed Earth’s orbit in 2003, the Zhurong rover began its exploration on Mars, and the Tiangong Space Station was fully completed in 2022. As more countries realise 10 value of deep-space research, they are planning new missions to Mars and farther places. No matter what risks lie ahead, scientists hold the belief that new discoveries will help humanity survive far into the future.
第二节 阅读 (共8小题;每小题3分,满分24分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Before the mid-20th century, most people saw space travel as nothing more than a fantastical dream, far beyond the reach of human capability. Yet driven by relentless curiosity and scientific ambition, scientists refused to accept this limitation. After decades of rigorous trials, risky tests, and iterative breakthroughs, including the development of liquid-fuel rockets and life-support systems, they finally mastered the technology to build rockets powerful enough to break free from Earth’s gravitational pull, opening the door to the cosmos.
The first historic milestone came on 4 October 1957, when the USSR launched Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite, into orbit, marking humanity’s first permanent presence beyond our planet. The 83-kilogram beeping sphere orbited Earth every 98 minutes, sending a clear signal that the space age had begun and triggering a global push for investment in space research and education. Four years later, on 12 April 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to journey into space, completing a 108-minute orbital flight in Vostok 1 and proving humans could survive and operate in the harsh vacuum of space.
The United States soon matched this feat, culminating on 20 July 1969, when NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface during the Apollo 11 mission, uttering his iconic words: “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” This achievement ignited a new era of deep-space exploration: in 1977, NASA launched Voyager 1, which continues to transmit faint data from interstellar space today, carrying a golden record of Earth’s sounds and cultures for any extraterrestrial life it might encounter. By 1998, the International Space Station (ISS) became a testament to unprecedented global collaboration, hosting astronauts from 15+ nations and maintaining an unbroken human presence in low Earth orbit since November 2000. These milestones transformed the once-impossible dream of space travel into a shared reality, paving the way for humanity’s ongoing journey to explore and understand the stars.

B
China’s space programme started later than those of Russia and the US, but it has made extraordinary progress in just a few decades, driven by long-term national investment, rigorous scientific research, and a firm commitment to independent innovation. From the early 1970s, China began developing its own Long March rockets, gradually building a full, self-reliant industrial chain for satellite launch, crewed flight, and deep-space exploration. After decades of unpublicized trials and breakthroughs, China became the third country in the world to independently send humans into space in 2003, when Yang Liwei successfully orbited Earth in the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft, completing a 21-hour mission that marked the historic start of China’s human spaceflight era.
Then Shenzhou 6 and 7 completed a second multi-day manned orbit and the first Chinese extravehicular spacewalk, respectively, testing critical technologies for life support, mobility, and multi-person crew operations. This was followed by the Jade Rabbit rover, part of the 2013 Chang’e 3 mission, which landed on the moon and sent back the first high-resolution images of the lunar surface captured by a Chinese probe, paving the way for future lunar exploration. On 23 July 2020, China launched Tianwen 1, its first independent interplanetary mission to Mars. The probe entered Mars orbit in February 2021 and later deployed the Zhurong rover, which explored the Utopia Planitia region, collecting valuable data on Martian geology, soil composition, and climate patterns.
From 2021 to 2022, China completed a series of high-stakes, precision rocket missions to assemble its modular space station, launching the core Tianhe module, two laboratory modules (Wentian and Mengtian), and multiple cargo resupply craft. In late 2022, the successful docking of the Mengtian module signalled the basic completion of the Tiangong Space Station, a fully operational, permanently crewed outpost in low Earth orbit. This modern station hosts astronauts for long-duration stays, enabling cutting-edge experiments in microgravity medicine, materials science, and fundamental astronomy, greatly furthering our understanding of the universe and laying critical groundwork for future deep-space exploration.

第二部分 拓展阅读
China's Space Station: Tiangong
The construction of China's space station, Tiangong, follows a three-step strategy that has lasted for nearly 30 years. In 2003, Shenzhou V sent astronaut Yang Liwei into space, making China the third country to master independent manned space technology. 19 China started almost from scratch, yet scientists and engineers worked day and night to overcome one challenge after another.
Key technologies were gradually mastered in the process. In 2008, Shenzhou VII completed China's first extravehicular spacewalk. In 2011, Shenzhou VIII successfully docked with Tiangong-1, helping China master the key rendezvous and docking technology. The year 2021 marked the start of the space station's in-orbit assembly. The Tianhe core module was launched, and the first three astronauts entered China's own space station. 20 That year, the first "Tiangong Classroom" came into being, a live space science lesson that inspired millions of teenagers. In 2022, Chinese astronauts set a new record of staying in space for six months. Two groups of astronauts also met in space for the first time and finished the first in-orbit rotation.
21 In 2023, the Tiangong space station officially entered regular operation, and the national space laboratory was fully put into use for long-term space scientific research. In 2024, China announced that in 2022 it had achieved the world's first full life cycle cultivation of rice in space, from seeds to fully grown plants, marking a major breakthrough in space life science.
22 In 2025, China signed an astronaut cooperation agreement with Pakistan and launched the selection and training of the first foreign astronauts, promoting international cooperation in manned spaceflight. In April 2026, China confirmed its first foreign trainee astronauts, with two Pakistani candidates starting training in Beijing to deepen global space cooperation.
Today, Tiangong serves as a national space laboratory in stable operation and is fully open to international cooperation. 23 It also reflects China’s spirit of perseverance and exploration.
