“It is normal (正常的) for you to want only the best for yourselves, which is the source (源头) of your problems and stress. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups. What’s worse, you were eyeing each other’s cups.”
“Now if life is coffee, then the jobs, money, and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold life, but the quality (品质) of life doesn’t change. Sometimes, by focusing only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it.”

Teens (青少年) will have a duty to care for the environment. However, according to a new study, teens’ low interest in nature may be something we should worry about.
The study finds that teenagers’ interest in nature wanes. Researchers asked 1,269 students, aged 8 to 14, to take part in an online survey across four weeks in March 2021. The questions were designed to help researchers tell how much the kids’ interest is in nature. The findings show that for children aged 8 to 11, one out of two felt very close to nature. However, in the older age group, only one in five felt the same closeness.
How did this happen? Natural reasons, such as the beginning of puberty (青春期) and hormonal changes, could lead to teens’ changing interests. Experts note other reasons could include teens’ activities, such as sports and spending time with friends, which could take more of teens’ attention. And of course, computers and technology also take their attention.
The effects (影响) of nature on our health are too many to be told. The findings said that spending time in parks, forests and other green spaces as a child lowered the risk (降低风险) of developing a number of health problems. Kids’ interest in nature is not just good for themselves, but to others, and the world as a whole.
So it is important to help kids keep an interest in nature. There are many ways that parents can play a part. You can encourage kids to spend time outdoors doing fun activities or visit places that focus on the beauty of nature. You can also set an example for your teens. Recycling and volunteering to help clean up the community show that you are interested in protecting the environment, and that will influence (影响) teens as well.
28. What does the underlined word “wanes” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Goes up. B. Gets larger. C. Stays unchanged. D. Becomes weaker.
29. What can you learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Computers take most of teens’ attention.
B. Teens spend too much time doing sports.
C. Natural reasons could change teens’ interest in nature.
D. Teens’ activities are the main reason for their problems.
30. Paragraph 4 mainly talks about ________.
A. the ideas about nature protection B. the effects of nature on the world
C. what places are important for health D. why kids’ interest in nature is helpful
31. Why does the writer write this passage?
A. To tell kids some ways to solve natural problems.
B. To advise parents to help teens keep an interest in nature.
C. To ask teachers to help students protect the environment.
D. To encourage children to learn more about the environment.

September is a big month for students in China since the new term begins from now on. In ancient China, the school entrance ceremony (入学典礼) was one of the most important ceremonies.
Children began school between the ages of 4~7 in ancient China. Since there was no certain time to begin a new term at that time, the most important thing for parents was to choose a lucky day for their children to enter school. Next, parents would prepare some school things for their children, including desks, chairs and four treasures of the study.
In ancient times, teachers were usually very knowledgeable local persons. Parents would prepare many gifts, and then write a letter of invitation to ask a knowledgeable man to be their children’s teacher.
On the day their children entered school, parents would take them to take part in the First Writing Ceremony. Before that, children would kowtow (叩头) to the statue of Confucius nine times and then to their teacher three times in order to show their deep respect. During the ceremony, the teacher would put a red point on each student’s forehead (前额) as it meant opening the wisdom eye. Children would also ring a certain bell to start a new term. After that, they could finally sit down in their seats and begin to study. The First Writing Ceremony was a very important ceremony for every student.
Every day, students would arrive at school earlier than their teacher, and kowtow to the statue of Confucius, and then go back to the seats. Usually the teacher would give every student a new name which was used for future Imperial Examination (科举考试).
Today, some schools are starting to hold an entrance ceremony like ancient schools did. Students put on traditional clothes and bow to the statue of Confucius and their teachers. This means that from this moment, they take a step in the life-long journey of learning.
44. At what age did children begin school in ancient China?

46. What did the teacher usually give to every student for the Imperial Examination?
