They are gentle creatures, but they may bite when they feel frightened. With a clean cage, fresh water, and proper food, a hamster can be a wonderful friend.

Passing Happiness On
I was standing in the checkout line behind a woman about 60 years old. When it was her turn to pay, the cashier (收银员) greeted her by name and asked how she was doing.
The woman looked down, shook her head and said, “Not so good. My husband just lost his job, and my son is making trouble again. The truth is, I don’t know how I’m going to spend the holidays.”
Then she gave the cashier food stamps.
I felt so upset. I wanted to help but didn’t know how. Should I offer to pay for her food? Should I ask about her husband’s job?
As I walked into the parking lot, I saw the woman returning her shopping cart (手推车). I remembered something in my bag that might help her. Maybe it could make her feel better.
My heart beat fast as I walked up to her.
“Excuse me,” I said, my voice shaking a little. “I heard what you said to the cashier. It sounds like you’re going through a really hard time. I’m so sorry. I’d like to give you something.”
I handed her the small card from my bag.
When the woman read the only two words on the card, she began to cry. Through her tears, she said, “You have no idea how much this means to me.”
I was a little surprised by her answer. I had never done anything like this before, so I didn’t know what kind of reaction I would get. All I could think to say was, “Would it be okay to give you a hug (拥抱)?”
After we hugged, I walked back to my car and began to cry too.
The words on the card?
“You Count.”
A few weeks earlier, one of my working partners gave me a similar card to encourage me on a project I was working on. When I read it, I felt a warm feeling inside me. Deeply touched, I ordered my own box of You Count cards and started sharing them.
24. Where did the story probably happen?
A. At a workplace B. At a restaurant C. At a post office D. At a food store
25. What did the writer give to the old woman?
A. Food stamps B. Some money C. A small card D. A job offer
26. The old woman cried, probably because ________.
A. the words on the card greatly encouraged her B. she could use the card to pay the bill
C. the writer could help her husband get a job D. she could help her son do better
C
Imagine you’re sitting around with a few friends, playing video games, when someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites. “Oh, that game is way too easy. It’s not worth (值得) the time,” one of your friends remarks. The others nod in agreement. Even though you truly enjoy the game, you choose not to argue. Instead, you go along with the crowd.
What you’ve just experienced is commonly known as peer pressure—or peer influence. It means you change your behavior, dress, or attitude just to fit in with a group of people your age. As a teenager, you have likely faced peer pressure in many different areas of your life, whether at school, among friends, or even online.
People of all ages are influenced by those around them. However, for teenagers, school and other activities often take you away from home, so you may end up spending more time with friends than with family. As you grow more independent (独立的), your peers naturally begin to play a larger role in your daily life.
According to Dr. Casey from Cornell University, teens are quite quick and accurate (准确的) when making decisions on their own—especially when they have enough time to think things through. However, when they make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, their choices are often shaped by friends or other people around them. In one recent study, teenage volunteers were asked to play a video driving game. Some played alone, while others played with friends watching. The results were surprising: teens took more than twice as many risks when their friends were watching than when they played alone. This finding suggests that teens may find it much harder to control risky behavior when their friends are nearby or when they are feeling strong emotions, like anger.
Still, peer pressure is not always a bad thing. Just as peers can push us toward unwise choices, they can also encourage us to make good ones. For example, a teen might join a volunteer project simply because his or her friends are doing it, or work harder in school because friends believe good grades count. In fact, friends often encourage one another to study, try out for sports, or develop new skills.
In the end, although we are usually influenced by those around us, the final decision—whether to act or not—is always our own. So when it comes to making choices, the choice is finally yours.
27. According to the passage, Dr. Casey probably agrees that teens ________.
A. enjoy playing driving games with friends
B. prefer to have time to think before deciding
C. find it easy to make decisions when they are alone
D. are more likely (可能的) to take risks when friends are around
28. The words “in the heat of the moment” in Paragraph 4 probably mean “________”.
A. when teens try to avoid dangers B. when teens believe their own opinion
C. when teens feel very angry or excited D. when teens think carefully about the situation
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Teens want to be different from their peers. B. Peer pressure influences both teens and grown people.
C. Peer pressure is always bad for teens. D. Teens find it hard to get good grades at school.
30. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Peer Pressure: Do We Need to Deal with It? B. Peer Pressure: Can We Really Stay Away from It?
C. Peer Pressure: How It Helps Teens Make Friends D. Peer Pressure: How It Affects Teens and Their Choices
六、阅读短文并根据内容回答问题。(共10分,第44-46题每题2分,第47题4分)
Joy Journal
Feeling joy is good for you. It doesn’t just make you happy at the moment. You can also save it and use it again.
When you feel joyful, you are in a good mood (情绪). This helps you deal with problems and find answers. An expert says that feeling joy is good for your health. It can protect you from getting sick. It also helps reduce pain, worry, and stress. Joy can spread (传播) quickly. It helps not only you but also people around you.
A joy journal is a special place to write down anything that makes you happy. It is your own journal, so you can put whatever you like in it. When you take time to write down what brings you joy, you can feel even more happiness from that moment.
The expert also says that a joy journal can help you remember happy times when you feel sad, lonely, or worried. When you turn the pages, those happy feelings can come back. This can make you feel better. It can also tell you that sad feelings will pass, and joy will come again soon.
How do you keep a joy journal? First, choose a notebook and decorate (装饰) the cover. You can decide how often to write in it — every day after school or only on weekends. You can put all your joyful things together or divide your journal into parts like family, friends, school, and hobbies. To best express yourself, you can write, draw, use colorful pens, or stick things in. In your joy journal, you can make lists of your favorite things, such as your favorite food, TV shows, or animals, and why you like them. You can write down a happy moment from each day: who was there, what happened, and what you could see, hear, or smell. This will help you feel that joy again and remember it more easily. You can even make a joy journal with your family to record what makes all of you happy.
Maybe you are very busy so you can’t write in a joy journal every day. Maybe you have other ways to keep happy moments, like posting on social media or making video diaries. These are also good ways. But, if possible, try to write down the things that make you smile in your joy journal.

A
以下三名同学适合饲养哪种宠物?请选出正确的答案,有一个为多余选项。
____21____ Tom lives in a small apartment and works during the day. He often returns home late at night. He wants a quiet pet that does not need much space or outdoor walks. He also hopes the pet is not difficult to look after.
____22____ Lily is a student with lots of free time after school. She loves being outside and wants a pet that can run and play with her. She is ready to spend time and energy taking care of it.
____23____ Mike is very busy with his studies. He wants a pet that is simple to care for. He does not want to walk it or clean its bed often. He just wants to watch it and feel relaxed.
A. Hamster
A hamster is a small and quiet pet. It does not need a large living space and is easy to look after. Hamsters are mostly active at night and sleep during the day. They are gentle creatures, but they may bite when they feel frightened. With a clean cage, fresh water, and proper food, a hamster can be a wonderful friend.
B. Dog
A dog is an energetic and loyal animal. It needs lots of space to run and play, as well as everyday walks outdoors. Dogs enjoy spending time with people and can become true friends. However, taking care of a dog takes a lot of time and effort. You need to be responsible, patient, and ready to give it regular exercise and care.
C. Goldfish
A goldfish is a good choice for beginners. It lives in a fish tank with clean water and does not need to be walked or played with. You simply feed it once a day and clean the tank from time to time. Watching goldfish swim quietly can help you feel peaceful and relaxed after a busy day.
D. Cat
A cat is an independent (独立的) and tidy animal. It does not need a large space or daily walks. Cats sleep for most of the day and enjoy having some time alone. You should clean their litter box every day and provide fresh food and water. Cats can be loving, but they may not always want to play with you.

【26题详解】

【答案】27. D 28. C 29. B 30. D
