You may know the saying. “Good manners cost nothing.” But for AI companies like OpenAI, that’s not quite true. Their CEO says people using polite words like “please” and “thank you” with chatbots (聊天机器人) have cost the company tens of millions of dollars.
When you are polite, the chatbot often gives a longer reply. Making these longer answers uses more computing power (算力) and energy. For example, simply asking for “capital of France” gets a short answer. But asking “Please tell me the capital of France” may result in a much longer reply.
Studies show most chatbot users treat smart things as humans. Many people talk to AI politely without thinking because it is a natural habit. Being polite might change the answer you get, but it doesn’t make the AI more human—it just makes it work harder.
This added work uses a lot of energy. Every time we ask AI to do something, like creating a picture or answering a question, it uses power. With more and more people using AI, the total energy use is becoming a bigger problem. So, while being polite is a good habit, with AI, sometimes simple is better-for both the company and our planet.
1.How much have users’ polite words cost OpenAI?
2.What kind of reply does a chatbot often give when you are polite?
3.Why do many people talk to AI politely without thinking?
4.What is becoming a bigger problem with more people using AI?
5.What do you like to do with AI? What change will you make after reading this text?
【答案】1.Tens of millions of dollars. 2.A longer reply. 3.Because it is a natural habit./It is a habit. 4.The total energy use. 5.I like using AI to create pictures. Now, I’ll ask for one good picture instead of many tries./ I like to chat with AI and ask questions. Now I’ll keep my questions shorter and clearer./ I use AI to create cartoon pictures for fun. Now I will use AI less often for fun to help save energy./...
1.首段提到“people using polite words… have cost the company tens of millions of dollars”,直接提取金额即可作答。
2.第二段开头说明“When you are polite, the chatbot often gives a longer reply”,截取关键信息就能得出答案。
3.第三段指出“Many people talk to AI politely without thinking because it is a natural habit”,照搬原文原因即可。
4.第四段讲到“With more and more people using AI, the total energy use is becoming a bigger problem”,提取核心内容作答。
5.本题为开放性试题,先说明自己平时用AI做什么,再结合文章观点写出今后会简化用语、减少不必要礼貌表述或节约使用AI的合理改变,语句通顺即可。

Making Words with Movement
International Day of Sign Languages is on September 23rd.
What is sign language?
Sign language uses facial expressions, hand movements and body language. It is used instead of speaking or writing. There is no one universal sign language. Different countries have their own. Scientists say Koko asked for a kitten for Christmas using sign language.
In the UK, the earliest known use of sign language was at a wedding in 1576. And the first school opened for deaf children in Scotland in 1760. Although it was widely used, signing wasn’t encouraged until the 1970s. And most deaf children were taught spoken and written language instead.

重难语篇练习

For the past 20 years, Reckoning Theater (心目影院) in Beijing has been describing movies—telling about the pictures—to its listeners.
That’s because its listeners are all blind people. Xiao Huanyi is one of the theater’s regular visitors. The 65-year-old man was born blind. “I wasn’t interested in movies at first,” he said. “I used to listen to stories on the radio. Reckoning Theater is different. It describes the pictures. That is important.”
Places that meet blind people’s needs are hard to find. By 2021, over 17 million people in China were blind or nearly blind. Reckoning Theater was started by Wang Weili in 2005. His idea came in 2000, when he described every picture of The Terminator to a blind friend, who enjoyed it a lot. Wang then used his own money to start the theater.
“They have the right to know everything that we know,” Wang said. “The government has provided special schools and sidewalks to meet their basic living needs. But life isn’t made up only of these basic needs.”
According to Wang, it is not easy to describe a movie. Preparations for a two-and-a-half-hour film could take as long as two weeks. He must watch the movie many times to get familiar with the story and its characters. In his description, Wang pays attention to what appears on the screen, instead of what happens.
With the help of a few volunteers, in recent years, Wang has also organized different outdoor activities for blind people. “The world is full of interesting things. I want to keep working to make the difference smaller between us,” he said.
1.Who does Reckoning Theater serve?
2.When was Reckoning Theater started by Wang Weili?
3.What has the government provided?
4.How long may it take to prepare for describing a two-and-a-half-hour movie?

Volunteers check and choose the food carefully. Then they put them into the machines. To keep the food safe, they always make the temperature in the machines below 10℃.
The project gives first chance to people who need help most. People from poor families, elderly people living alone and street cleaners can book food through the “iShenzhen” app before 8:00 pm. After 8:00 pm, any of the rest food is open to all people in the city. This rule makes sure no food is wasted at the end of each day.

Adam is a sixth-grade student. He always fails science tests. Ms. Li asked him, “Why can’t you get good scores in science?” Adam said, “That’s because I think science isn’t very useful in our lives.” But the teacher didn’t agree with him. “We can use science everywhere. You can try to find the science in your daily life.”
One weekend, Adam saw his grandpa throwing away some dry flowers. He asked why these flowers were dry. His grandpa explained, “These flowers weren’t watered for a long time, so they died.” Hearing those words, Adam thought maybe science could help to solve Grandpa’s problem. So he decided to learn science well.
He asked Ms. Li for help. She suggested starting by learning how much water plants need. However, Adam faced many difficulties. He didn’t know how to test the moisture content (水含量) in the soil, nor did he know what kind of tools could water the flowers regularly. But Adam didn’t give up. After several months, Adam successfully invented a machine that could automatically (自动地) water the flowers. This machine watered the flowers regularly at the right times.
Adam completely changed his mind. He learned that science is important, and every small invention can make our lives easier and more convenient.
1.What did Adam think of science at first?
2.Why did Adam decide to learn science well?
3.What advice did the teacher give Adam?
4.What did Adam invent after several months of hard work?
5.What can we learn from the text?

When talking about “good people”, who first comes to your mind? Many Chinese might think of Lei Feng. In China, Lei Feng is a symbol of the giving spirit. People who act selflessly are sometimes talked about as “living Lei Feng”.

Making Words with Movement
International Day of Sign Languages is on September 23rd.
What is sign language?
Sign language uses facial expressions, hand movements and body language. It is used instead of speaking or writing. There is no one universal sign language. Different countries have their own. There are around 300 sign languages in the world. The most common in the UK is British Sign Language (BSL). Like spoken languages, sign languages grow and change. Signs can stand for the whole ideas. They can also stand for individual letters or words.
Who uses it?
Sign language is mainly used by people who are deaf or have hearing problems. Some people are deaf all of their life. They call themselves “Deaf” with a capital “D”. It is an important part of their identity (身份).
The history of sign language
The first evidence (证据) of sign language dates back to the 5th century BC. But historians believe it may be even older than the spoken language. Native Americans have used a sign language called Hand Talk. It has even been taught to animals. In the 1970s, a gorilla (大猩猩) named Koko learned signs for hundreds of words.

3.Who is sign language mainly used by?

There is a public service project called “food banks” in Shenzhen. It uses smart technology to help people who need food and cut down food waste.

Local people support the project. One father said he took his daughter to get bread from the food bank. “This is a good way to teach her not to waste food and to live a healthy life,” he said.
