The Bear family lived in a big tree house. They had a happy life. But Brother Bear and Sister Bear never said “please” or “thank you” at home, and sometimes called each other names like “Silly head!” At the dinner table, things got even worse. They fought for food and reached food across the table in front of others without asking.
Mama Bear tried many ways to correct her kids’ behavior, but nothing seemed to work. Then she thought, “The best way to break bad manners is by building good ones. What if I make learning manners fun?” So she came up with a great idea. She created an adventure (冒险) game about manners.
“Our tree house is a magical (有魔力的) kingdom. Here, you’ll get a golden key for every polite word or action. Collect enough keys, and you’ll get a special surprise,” Mama Bear explained.
At first, Brother Bear and Sister Bear played along just for the golden keys. But as they went on playing along, something changed. When Brother Bear helped Sister Bear pick up her toys, he felt warm inside. And when Sister Bear said “Thank you” with a big smile, Brother Bear couldn’t help but smile brightly back.

Last Sunday afternoon, the weather was sunny and warm. I decided to take my dog Lucky for a walk in Central Park. We were walking along the lake when I noticed an old woman sitting on the grass. She looked very afraid with a photo in her hand. She kept looking around and shaking her head sadly.
I walked over and asked politely if she needed any help. She looked up at me with tears (眼泪) in her eyes. She told me that she had come to the park with her 7-year-old grandson Tom. She had stopped to buy an ice cream for him at a nearby shop, but when she turned around, Tom was gone. She looked for him for almost an hour, but couldn’t find him anywhere. She didn’t have a phone with her and couldn’t remember her home address clearly.
I helped her up and took her to the park office. The worker turned on the radio to ask others to find Tom together. About ten minutes later, a little boy ran into the office, crying loudly. When he saw his grandma, he ran to her gladly and hugged her at once. The old woman thanked me again and again and wanted to give me some money, but I refused.

On the first day of summer vacation, my friend Lily invited me to climb Purple Mountain. Just as I got excited, Xiaolan messaged me excitedly about her Hawaiian vacation—the trip I had always dreamed of. A pang of envy (嫉妒) stung me.
Then Lily canceled our plan as her cousin was moving to Sanya. I forced a smile while hiding tears behind my phone screen.
Feeling down, I went to Grandma Zhang’s house. Her garden was overrun with weeds (杂草). “This wisteria vine (紫藤) made the roses grow slowly,” Grandma said sadly, handing me a big pair of scissors. While I was pulling weeds, she explained, “Poison ivy (毒葛) grows fast but destroys everything around it—just like negative thoughts.”
Suddenly Grandma shouted, “Don’t touch that!” I looked back and saw a plant with red spots. “I need to cut it down immediately!” she said. “Your mind works the same way. It’s okay to feel sad, but feed your soul with positive things!” She handed me a watering can. “You are just like this rose—it grows beautifully because of sunlight and care, but not weeds or poison ivy.”
As I watered the roses, their sweet smell lifted my spirits. “Joy isn’t found in faraway places,” she said. “It grows right here when you nurture (滋养) life with kindness.”

When I was in Grade Seven, I was very shy and afraid to speak in class. I usually sat quietly in my seat and never put up my hand, even when I knew the answer clearly. One day, our teacher asked us to prepare a two‑minute speech about our favorite hobby and share it in front of the whole class.
I wanted to keep silent and even thought about asking for leave, but my teacher noticed my nervous look and encouraged me to have a try. She said my thoughts were worth listening to. I chose my hobby—collecting stamps, since I had kept this hobby for many years and had hundreds of beautiful stamps from different countries.
I practiced again and again at home every evening, reading the script line by line and correcting my pronunciation. However, on the day of the speech, my hands shook heavily and my voice was very low. I forgot several sentences and almost gave up halfway.
To my surprise, my classmates cheered for me quietly and gave me warm smiles instead of laughing. Their kindness gave me enough warmth and courage. I took a deep breath, calmed down and finished my speech smoothly. After that, my teacher praised me for my courage and patience.
From this experience, I learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but acting in spite of it. Trying our best is far more important than being perfect. Now I am much more confident and willing to express my ideas in public. I will always remember this meaningful lesson in my life.

On a rainy afternoon, I was on my way home from school when I saw a little bird lying on the wet ground. Its wings were hurt, and its feathers were soaked by the rain, making it unable to fly. It kept trembling slightly, as if it was scared and cold. I felt so sorry for it that I immediately took off my school coat, gently covered it, and carefully picked it up in my hands. The bird was very small, so light that I was afraid of hurting it.
When I got home, I asked my mother for help. She found a clean cardboard box, put some soft cotton in it, and made a warm “home” for the bird. We dried its small body with a clean towel, prepared some cooked rice and warm water, and put them beside the box. At first, the bird was very afraid, huddling in the corner of the box and refusing to eat or move. But every day after school, I would sit beside the box, talk to it quietly, and feed it a little rice patiently. After a few days, it gradually let down its guard, started to eat actively, and even jumped around in the box.
One sunny Sunday morning, I noticed that the bird’s wings had healed. I opened the window, gently took the box to the window sill, and let it fly into the sky. It fluttered its wings, sang happily, and flew around my window twice as if to say “thank you” before flying away into the blue sky. Watching it fly freely, I felt warm and proud in my heart. That experience taught me that life is valuable and every small kind act matters. When we show love and care to small lives around us, we can not only help them get out of trouble but also get endless happiness and peace in return.

3.What can we learn from the story?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.Kindness brings warmth and joy.

重难语篇练习
Our school started a month-long environment-protection activity last month, which was themed “Green Campus, Happy Growth”. All the students in Grade 7 to 9 took an active part in it, and even some teachers joined the activity to set a good example for us. The activity included three meaningful parts: picking up rubbish, planting small trees, and making posters to call on people to love nature and protect the environment.
Each class was given a small area of the school campus to clean, including the playground, the corridor and the garden. Students took gloves and rubbish bags, bent down to pick up plastic bags, empty bottles, paper scraps and other waste things. They also carefully sorted the rubbish into recyclable and non-recyclable groups, so that it could be recycled and reused, reducing environmental pollution. On a sunny Saturday morning, some students went to the hill near our school with young trees, shovels and water buckets, and planted over 200 young trees on the hillside. They worked hard, digging holes, putting in the trees, filling the holes with soil and watering the trees, hoping the young trees would grow up quickly and help make the air fresher.
Besides, other students drew colorful and creative posters with warm messages like “Love our earth, start from small things” and “Save every drop of water, protect our home”. These posters were put up around the school campus and in the nearby community, attracting many people’s attention. The head teacher said in his speech that the activity was not just to clean the school and plant trees, but to raise students’ awareness of protecting the environment and let green ideas take root in everyone’s heart. Most students said they learned a lot from the activity and would keep doing small things in daily life to help protect the environment. The school also announced that it would hold such an environment-protection activity every term to make green ideas part of students’ daily life.

A.To make something higher.
B.To make people know and care more.

A.The school pays much attention to students’ sense of environmental protection.

People have told stories about Robin Hood for over 700 years. Nobody knows if he was a real person or an invented character. In the legends, Robin was extremely smart and humorous, he helped strangers, and later his kindness paid off.
In The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, Robin was just a young man, who was good at archery (射箭术). One day he was walking through Sherwood Forest, a royal hunting forest near Nottingham in England. There he got into trouble with a group of men. Among them, he killed the cousin of the Sheriff (郡长) of Nottingham. Robin became a legendary (传奇的) outlaw, and soon the leader of one hundred outlaws, known as his “Merry Men”.

A group of us were drawing on the ground with chalk when Rafael passed by. He was my parents’ friend who had a bakery with the most delicious food.
“Wow! These drawings are cool!” he said, trying not to step on them as he walked. He thought for a while and said, “I’m going to have a cookie sale to raise money to save the rainforests. And I need some artworks for the bags. Would you like to help?”
“Of course.” we said excitedly. Rafael had to leave but promised to be back soon. We read a little about the rainforests and began to draw. After everyone finished, we decided to look at the works of each other.
“Daniel, your drawing is wonderful. It seems that your drawing should be in a museum.” We were all surprised at Daniel’s picture. However, I felt something strange. Before that, I was proud of my drawing. But after comparing it with Daniel’s, I felt like the worst artist ever.
Rafael was back. He looked at our works and said, “I truly love all your drawings. Each style is special. Maybe you could work together in an eye-catching way. I’ll use a program on my computer to put all of them together in one picture, like a collage (拼贴画).”
“But my drawing is not as good as Daniel’s.” I said.
“Your drawing is great, too. There’s no right or wrong way to make art. Everybody has different styles and tastes.” Rafael said to me.
“Really?” I looked at our drawings closely again. “You are right. Each piece is actually different in its own way—just like each of us. Every person is unique and has his or her own value.” I said happily.

“Why do I live? Why do I wish for anything, or do anything? Is there anything in my life that will not be destroyed by my death?” Like Leo Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer, many people ask these difficult questions. Tolstoy spent his whole life trying to answer these difficult questions.
As a young man, he thought people could achieve perfection if they tried hard enough. So he worked very hard to be the best in everything. He thought that he would find meaning and truth in success.
In the 1850s. Tolstoy wrote his first stories. He wrote about his life in the army. He also told stories about his childhood. These works were published and Tolstoy became a well-known writer.
He earned the respect he always wanted. Many rich and smart men met and talked with Tolstoy. Some of them were writers like him. They talked a lot about faith (信仰) and the meaning of life. But soon Tolstoy recognized that these men were not perfect. Now he knew they could not answer his questions about faith.
So in the 1860s, Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning of life. He opened a school for the children of his serfs—the people who worked on his land. These workers were very poor. He wanted to help them because he thought they were more honest than the rich people he knew.
Tolstoy learned a lot from his workers. He understood how hard they worked to support their families. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning. So in 1862, Leo Tolstoy married a young woman named Sonya Behrs.
The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy’s life. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous books—War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Many experts say that War and Peace is one of the greatest books ever written. In these books, Tolstoy believed humans should live a simple life and take care of their families. Tolstoy thought this would satisfy him and bring him happiness.
Leo Tolstoy is still a very respected writer today. His faith and writings have influenced many people all over the world.

Happiness is important for everyone. Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Here is a story to help you.
Once a bird lived unhappily. So it traveled far away to look for its happiness.
It flew and flew. Suddenly it saw a spider climbing up a wall. The spider fell off the wall halfway. But it kept climbing again and fell off again. Even so, the spider didn’t give up. The little bird asked the spider in surprise. “Why don’t you have pain but happiness on your face though you fail again and again?”
“Because I keep making my efforts. I’m happy,” said the spider.
Then the little bird saw it: happiness is a will in the heart.
The bird continued flying and saw a lame duck help a little duck who got lost to find the way back home. Although it was disabled, it had a smiling face.

As soon as I arrived at my grandparents’ home, I felt relaxed. How lovely and peaceful the village was! The green and yellow plants were more beautiful than you could possibly imagine. From then on, I started living a comfortable village life. During the day, I watched ants under trees, went fishing, rode a bicycle everywhere and ran after the kids. In the evening I cooked dinner for my grandparents in person. Although there was no phone or Internet, I felt so joyful.

A long time ago, there was a small village. In the village lived a young farmer. He worked very hard every day, but he often felt unhappy and worried about his future. One day, he found a small egg in the grass. It looked different from other eggs, so he took it home and put it carefully in his chicken house.
Several days later, a beautiful swan came out of the egg. To the farmer’s surprise, this swan could lay a golden egg every day. Soon, the farmer became rich. But he was not satisfied. He thought that if he cut the swan open, he could get all the gold at once instead of waiting for one egg each day.
So he killed the swan. However, there was no gold inside. He lost the swan that brought him wealth. From then on, he became poor again. The farmer felt very sorry for what he did.

He often shared his food, toys and even his small pocket money with poor children around him.
One cold winter, the village had a terrible snowstorm. Crops were broken and there was little food left. Many villagers had to go hungry, and children looked weak and sad. Tom had only a small piece of bread for his own lunch. On his way home, he met an old man shivering in the cold. The old man said he had walked for a long time and hadn’t eaten anything for two days.

1.When did the school start the environment-protection activity?

People have told stories about Robin Hood for over 700 years. Nobody knows if he was a real person or an invented character. In the legends, Robin was extremely smart and humorous, he helped strangers, and later his kindness paid off.

The Sheriff of Nottingham was Robin’s greatest enemy. He was cruel (残忍) and treated the poor badly. It was his job to keep the woods safe and to make sure that nobody stole the king’s deer.
