Most people think fast delivery (快递) is new, but it’s actually very old. As early as the Shang and Zhou dynasties (商周时期), governments already had a way to send orders and news. This way was called yizhan. It was most developed in the Tang dynasty and continued to be used for hundreds of years.
The yizhan was built to help pass documents far and fast. Riders would stop at these places to change horses or rest. Sometimes, they passed the messages to the next rider. Because of this, news, food, and even money for the emperors could travel quickly across the land.
The yizhan was also built in a very ingenious way. These places were about 30 kilometers from each other. That was just right for a horse to go without stopping. Each place usually had houses for horses, rooms to keep things, kitchens, and beds for riders. Bigger places could hold many people and even had offices. Some had tall towers or flags so people could see them easily.
Later, the yizhan took on more new roles. When the Mongols (蒙古人) ruled, it also helped foreign officers and official visitors who came for work. This way helped the government, business, and the sharing of culture. Even the famous traveler Marco Polo said it worked very well.

Many students use apps to do many things every day. They always focus on what to buy, who to chat with. But they often don’t care more about the data privacy (数据隐私) on it. Data privacy means knowing what information you are sharing online and who can see it.
To help students learn more about data privacy, researchers in Germany created a game called Let’sProtectDATA.In this game, students play as a worker in a company. They need to solve different data privacy problems. For example, they have to learn how to find out the cheating emails and how to set strong passwords (密码).
The researchers tested the game with 181 students from six schools. One group of students played the game. Another group learned from books and instructions. The study found that students who played the game learned more about data privacy. They also felt more confident in protecting their information online.
The game is easy to use. Teachers can use it in class without much preparation. The researchers say that playing games can help students learn difficult topics in a fun way. When students enjoy learning, they remember more and get more knowledge.

The honeybee is one of the most important and interesting insects in the natural world. Unlike other insects, honeybees live in large groups called colonies. Each group has a queen bee, male bees and thousands of worker bees. They work together in a strict order to keep the colony alive.
Worker bees are all female. They do most of the work: looking for food, making honey, building the honeycomb and taking care of the young bees. They fly long distances to collect nectar from different kinds of flowers. During their flight, they also help pollinate plants, which helps flowers and crops grow well.
Honeybees communicate with each other by dancing. Different dance shapes show different messages, such as the direction and distance of food. Although they are small, they have a strong sense of smell and sight.
In recent years, the number of honeybees has become smaller because of pollution and human activities. Scientists suggest that people should plant more flowers and reduce the use of pesticides to protect these helpful little insects.

Have you heard of Pi Day? You may think it is all about having pies. That’s only partly right. Pi Day is actually about maths! Every year on March 14th, maths lovers and scientists celebrate Pi Day to honor (纪念) the special number pi.
▲ It was founded in 1988 by Larry Shaw, who worked at the Exploratorium, a science museum. He started the Pi Day celebration. During the first event, both workers in the Exploratorium and the public walked around one of the circular (圆形的) spaces in the museum while eating fruit pies. Later, the celebration became a yearly tradition at the museum and more visitors joined in. In 2019, the UNESCO set the day, March 14th, as the International Day of Mathematics.
There are many kinds of celebrations of Pi Day. Some people choose to remember as many digits (数字) of pi as they can, while some take part in a pi party, enjoying delicious pies and dancing to music. Besides, people use a writing style called Pilish to celebrate Pi Day. In a Pilish sentence, the number of letters in each word matches the digits of pi. The first word has three letters, the second has one letter, the third has four letters, and so on. An engineer Michal Keith, even wrote a book called Not A Wake by using Pilish.

Sometimes animals are so badly injured (受伤的) that common medicine cannot help them. However, animal lovers can still come to save them. In Brazil, a group of them uses their knowledge of medicine and computer technology to create man-made body parts for injured animals.
The technology is called three-dimensional (3D) printing, which can create all types of objects from a cup to a toy truck. It takes a lot of plastic. Now, a Canadian company has solved this problem. It has invented the ProtoCycler, which can turn waste plastic, such as bottles, into plastic that can be used in a 3D printer.
Last year, the Brazilian team used 3D printing to help a poor tortoise (陆龟), Freddy. A forest fire had burned 85% of her shell (壳), the hardest part of her back. In other words, her shell was nearly gone. The whole team worked together to save her life.
First, they took photos of Freddy and of a healthy tortoise with a complete shell. Then, they used a computer program to design a new shell that would fit her exactly. Later, a 3D printer created the new plastic shell. After that, the finished shell was attached to (贴附于) Freddy’s body. The new shell fit well, but the white plastic did not have a natural look. Plants are very important for all living things on the earth. Life could not go on well if there were no plants around us. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight through a special process. Animals and humans cannot make food in this way, so they have to depend on plants directly or indirectly.
Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals that feed on plants. Humans get meat, vegetables, fruit and many other daily foods from plants, too. Besides providing food, plants also help keep the air clean and fresh. They take in carbon dioxide that humans and animals breathe out and produce enough oxygen for us to breathe every day.
However, every year, people cut down millions of trees for wood or land, and some even destroy forests for farming. This makes the air dirtier, the weather warmer and the whole environment worse. To solve these problems, many countries make strict laws to stop cutting down young trees and protect forests.
Some people set up special nature parks to save rare plants that are in danger of disappearing. Students can also help a lot by planting trees on hills, saving paper in daily life and telling others the importance of plants. The pollution around us is becoming more serious, but small and kind actions can still make a big difference. If everyone tries to love, care for and protect plants, our earth will certainly become greener and more beautiful for everyone to live in.

How do you consider failure? Most of us avoid it and consider it a sign of not being smart or hard-working enough. But Ben-Ari, the maker of the Failure Toy, wants people to see failure not as a problem but as a learning experience.
The Failure Toy asks players in teams of five to build structures (结构) on a moving game wheel (轮盘). The team members get points by building balanced structures. But whenever the game pieces fall, the teams lose points. After each round, the players change teams. In other words, teams are made up of players with different points. Finally, each player fills out a card to show their guess of the winner. The winner might not be the person with the most points, but the one who has best supported their team’s success.
The Failure Toy follows Ben-Ari’s first product, the Empathy Toy. It was first used to help blind students and those who could see communicate with each other. Ben-Ari herself learned about failure during the process of making the Failure Toy.
After her third try to finish the Failure Toy, Ben-Ari took a break from the project for a year. Then a company called her and asked if she could hold a class to show them how to use the Failure Toy. Ben-Ari consented and got to work on the project. This time she and her team had grown, and they finished the work on time. The Failure Toy was a success!

Every 14 days, another language dies. There are many reasons for this. Some people think more common languages have more economic (经济的) power. Because of this, young people choose to learn a common language as they think it is more useful. Another reason is that some languages aren’t written down. Guujaaw is a leader of the Haida Nation, whose people have lived on the Queen Charlotte Islands, Canada, for more than 10, 000 years. Their language is endangered. Traditionally, it wasn’t written down, and, as a result, some people are worried that it will die one day. Guujaaw replies to this , “ We talk to each other, listen, visit, and believe in the spoken word. Expressing yourself without writing is natural. ” However , if Guujaaw’s language and others like it are going to stay alive , writing may have to become part of their lives.
When a language dies, a lot of knowledge dies with it. To begin with, language is a huge part of the culture of the people who speak it. Language allows speakers to say certain things: words that describe a cultural idea may not translate exactly into another language. Furthermore, many endangered languages have rich spoken cultures. Stories, songs and histories are passed on from older people to younger generations (一代) . Elizabeth Lindsey, a language researcher, emphasizes (强调) this. “When an elder dies, a library is burned,” she says.
Also, language death affects our knowledge about nature. Local people often have a deep understanding of plants, animals, and the relationship between them. David Harrison, a researcher on endangered languages, reflects, “80% of plant and animal species (物种) have been undiscovered by science. But that doesn’t mean they’re unknown to humans. ”
Many languages are endangered. However, it’s not too late. Children often grow up speaking two languages. “ No one ... becomes richer by giving up ... one language to learn another ,” Harrison said. If children feel both languages are important, they will use both. So, it is necessary that children realize how useful their local language is.
1.In Paragraph 2, the writer mainly tells us ________.
A.how cultures are passed on B.how cultures are discovered
C.why languages are written down D.why languages are important to cultures
2.The underlined word “ affects ” in the passage means “________” .
A.waits for B.depends on
C.is different from D.has an influence on

A.People need to use common languages more often.
B.The spoken word is more important than the written word.
C.Children are the hope to stop the local language from dying.
D.Many animals and plants are in danger because of dying languages.
Have you ever watched a seed sprout? Inside that seed lies an embryo (胚胎), a tiny but powerful structure that grows into a new life.
How does it grow? First, the seed needs water. When it gets wet, the seed’s outer shell, called the seed coat, becomes softer and the seed becomes bigger. Next, the seed begins to wake up. Inside, a tiny baby plant, called the embryo, starts to grow. It pushes against the seed coat, trying to get out. This is called “sprouting”. Then, a tiny root, called the radicle (胚根), pops out first. This root will help the plant find water and hold it in the ground. Soon after, a tiny stem (茎) and leaves, called the shoot, start to come out. The shoot will help the plant make food from sunlight.
Studies show that the way this embryo grows can inspire other fields. In agriculture, understanding how seed embryos develop helps farmers grow better crops. By studying how embryos use nutrients (营养物) and respond to the environment, scientists can create seeds that withstand(经受住) droughts and pests. These improved seeds mean better harvest and better food security for everyone.
Materials scientists seek inspiration from seed embryos, too. The way embryos push through soil and grow upwards is a wonderful achievement of engineering. Engineers use this understanding to create materials that can self-repair or change shapes in response to (作为对……的回应) the environment. Imagine clothes that mend themselves or buildings that can adjust to extreme weather!
Seed embryo growth is not just about plants, but also a source of inspiration across many fields. It shows us that even the smallest things in nature can have big impacts on our world. So next time you see a sprouting seed, remember—it’s a tiny wonder with endless possibilities!
1.What is the first thing a seed needs before it starts growing?

B.The way seed embryos grow is not important in other fields.
C.Scientists have created seeds that can grow in any environment.
D.The improved seeds can lead to better harvest and food safety.
4.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The importance of planting seeds for food security.
B.How seed embryos grow and inspire different fields.

D.Engineering achievements inspired by plant growth.
Yingge dance, a mix of drama, dance and martial arts (武术), is a Chinese national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) and is very popular in Chaoshan, Guangdong Province. Over a century ago, some Chinese people brought the dance to Thailand (泰国), and it has become an important local cultural symbol, deeply rooted in Thai society ever since.
From February 28 to March 1, 2026, the second Phanat Nikhom Yingge Dance Festival was held in Chonburi, Thailand. Seven teams took part in it, including one from Puning, Guangdong and three local Thai teams. The local government hopes the festival can help with cultural exchanges between China and Thailand. What’s more, Yingge dance has even been added to local school courses to pass on this cultural art.
Chinese and Thai performers danced together in the streets of the city. The Chinese Nigou Yingge Team, with about 40 members, came to Thailand for the first time. The team’s coach said it was a valuable chance for Chinese and Thai performers to learn from each other.
A team member with 15 years of experience in Yingge dance was deeply moved by the Thai performers’ strong interest and love for this art form. They talked a lot about face painting and performing skills, even without a common language.
The lively performance drew many local people and tourists. A 17-year-old Thai performer said he was happy to see so many people coming to watch. A local person said Yingge dance has become one of the most famous traditional arts in her hometown.

Chemistry is usually thought to be more difficult than other subjects, at least for the beginners. There are some reasons for this idea. For one thing, chemistry has a very specialized vocabulary (学科专用词汇). At first, studying chemistry is like learning a new language. Also, some concepts (概念) of chemistry are hard to understand. However, with hard work and careful study, you can finish this subject successfully—and even enjoy it. Here are some suggestions to help you.
Firstly, attend classes on time. Listen to your teacher and take careful notes in class. If possible, always review the topics you learn in class, and review your notes on the same day.
Secondly, think carefully whether you really understand the meaning of a term or the use of an equation (方程式). A good way to test your understanding is to explain a concept to a classmate or someone else.
Thirdly, pay attention to things which have something to do with chemistry in life. Watch or do experiments in class carefully.
Fourthly, question often and do not be afraid to ask your teacher or classmates for help.
You will find that chemistry is much more than numbers, formulas (公式) and equations. It’s often used in daily life just like math and physics. Once you fall in love with it, you’ll get lots of fun.

重难语篇练习
Should I go for a hamburger or a piece of bread? Do I paint my room blue or pink? People make choices every day but it can sometimes lead to feeling scared and unsure. When you’re able to make decisions, accept and learn from them.
Some decisions, like what to buy or when to go out, aren’t very serious, but others can influence your health, school and relationships. It is important to take time to make a decision, especially if it makes you feel nervous. However, if you ignore (忽视) decision-making, you will be in trouble.
When it comes to making difficult decisions, it can be helpful to break down your thinking. You could start by listing the different options—for example, whether to join a club or not, or which friend to ask for help. Then, think about the good and bad sides of each choice.
Teacher and health expert, Anita Garai says, “Listen to your body, especially if your thoughts are not clear or you feel worried.” Garai says people should follow their true feelings and listen to their hearts. Although considering other people’s feelings can be a part of decision-making, you shouldn’t make wrong decisions in order to please others.
Many people worry if they can make the “right” decision. Garai says, “There is not always a right or wrong choice. Different ways lead to different experiences.”
If your choice leads to disappointment (失望), try to think about whether you would make a different decision in the future.
