Back in Grade 6, football became my favorite sport. I hoped to get the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. At first, I was not the best player on the team, but I worked very hard. As the football season went on, we finally got second place in the city. Our team was very good—Tom was the captain and always passed the ball to his teammates, but I scored the most goals in the team. By the end of the year, I thought I was the MVP.
At the end of the year, our school had a sports dinner. People won prizes for their excellent performance. Everyone on the team believed I would get the MVP. At the end of the dinner, the coach announced (宣布) the winners. He said, “The winner of the MVP is—Tom.”
How could that be? I could not believe my ears. After the dinner, the coach came up to me and explained. He said, “You were the best player on the team, but you did not pass the ball. You played for yourself, not for the team. Football is a team sport. It is not about one individual player.”
Now I am in Grade 8 and the captain of the football team. I have learned an important lesson: a team sport is not just about me—it is about “us”. Because of this experience, I am both a better player and a better captain now.

If you are under pressure at school, what can you do to make yourself happy? Some may eat their favorite food or listen to some music. Others may go for a walk or get some exercise. A new study found another great way to lower students’ stress—playing with dogs.
Scientists studied 105 students between the ages of eight and nine. 35 dogs and their trainers also took part in the test. The children were divided into 3 groups. The students in the first group spent 20 minutes with a dog and its trainer a week. They watched the trained dogs perform and even played with them. The second group spent the same amount of time doing exercise to relax. The last group did neither of these things.
During this time, the scientists recorded the students’ cortisol levels (皮质醇水平). Cortisol is a stress hormone (压力激素). The more stressed you feel, the more cortisol you will have in your body. What did the scientists find? Both the second and third groups showed rises in cortisol levels. The first group, however, showed no big increase. And the children in this group had the lowest cortisol levels after playing with the dogs.
According to the study, students enjoy playing with dogs, and it helps them become happier. The stress hormone falls over time this way, and it is good for students’ health. But here comes the next question: Is 20 minutes of playtime with a dog the best amount of time? Scientists are going to keep working to find out the answer.
