24-year-old Zhao Qian had never entered a concert hall until the week of the audition ()She
borrowed money for a three-hour bus ride to the provincial capital in Guizhou, practicing finger exercises
on the back of the seat in front of her.
第3页共1页
The audition room was full of mirrors and judgement. One by one,the other candidates played fast,
per pleces. When Qian's tu came, she found her bamboo flute (had cracked during the joumey:
a hairline split ran aoross the embouchure ()The tone that emerged was breathy;as if the wind
itself were sobbing.
She thought of giving up,but the judges-six city musicians-were already staring.Instead of the
cequired musio,Qian closed her eyes and played the lullaby (her mother used to hum after iong
hours'work. It had no composer, oniy.the rhythm of shuttie iooms and smail pauses where her mother
caught her breath.
When she finished, the room was silent. Then the youngest judge,a blind woman with silver earrings,
asked,"Can you play it again, but this time answer the flute when it questions you?"Qian lifted the
cracked flute and discovered the crack had lowered every note slightly, creating a gentle crying sound. She
played the lullaby again, letting the melody break and then heal itself in the music. The judge smiled, tears
in her eyes.
Two weeks later,a letter arrived at the textile mill.It was written in both Chinese and Braille."We
have heard many flawless performances,"it read,"but only yours remembered the sound of a mother
coming home tired. The orchestra needs that memory."
Zhao Qian became the city's first bamboo flutist.During concerts, audiences sometimes whispered
that her solo passages smelled of mountain mist. They did not know that after each performance she
returned to the quiet bamboo wood, pressed her ear to the newest bamboo shoots, and listened for the next
question the wind might ask.

As India's most important festival of the year,Diwali is a time to celebrate the victory of light over
darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.Widely celebrated among more than a billion
people from a variety of beliefs, the five days of Diwali are marked by prayer, feasts, fireworks, family
gatherings, and helping those in need. For some,Diwali is also the beginning of a new year.
So widely is it celebrated that it has no single origin story. In Ilinduisu()alone,there are
several versions of tales about the Hindu god Vishnu, who brings back the balance of good and evil in
times of trouble.Even other religions in India have their own Diwali stories too.
But Diwali is perhaps best known for the brightly buring clay lamps that people line up outside
their homes on the night of the new moon to invite the presence of Lakshmi, wife of Vishnu, the goddess
of wealth. What a scene to have a sea of lamps lit and placed in rows along the walls of temples and
houses, and floating on rivers and streams.Homes are decorated, and floors inside and out are covered
with beautiful designs made of colored rice, sand,or flowers. The doors and windows of houses are kept
open in the hope that Lakshmi will find her way inside and bless the residents with wealth and success.
Diwali is generally a time for visiting, exchanging gifts, wearing new clothes, feasting, feeding the
poor, and setting off fireworks.Among others, card games are encouraged as a way of ensuring good luck
in the coming-year.Traditionally,in honor of Lakshmi, the female player always wins.
The spirit of Diwali extends beyond a single tradition. However it is celebrated, the spirit of Diwali
is universal-the belief that, eventually, light will overcome darkhess.
38.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A.Diwali centers on family parties and charity.
B.Diwali symbolizes a new year for all Indians
C.Diwali is celebrated by people of the same faith.
D.Diwali is India's key festival with rich celebrations.
39.Why do people play card games during Diwali according to the passage?
A.To pray for good fortune.
B.To win money for the poor.
C.To test their personal fortune.
D.To celebrate family reunions.
40.What can be inferred about the core spirit of Diwali?
A.It attaches great importance to personal wealth
B.It encourages kindness and the victory of goodness.
C.It values family unity more than cultural traditions.
D.It mainly focuses on religious performances and prayers.
41.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To record the historical development of Diwali.
B.To show different origin stories of Diwali in India.
C.To introduce customs and spiritual values of Diwali.
D.To explain the importance of goddess Lakshmi in India

It is well known that leaming a musical instrument benefits the brain, enhancing fine motor skills
and memory. But can this training also change how musicians experience pain?
Pain triggers vital reactions in our bodies and brains, like pulling a hand from a hot pan. However,
prolonged pain can be detrimental,If an injury causes the brain to send persistent"don't move"signals,it
can disorganize the brain's“body map”一the area that controls movement一leading to increased
longterm suffering and reduced mobility.Yet,individuals experience pain differently. Some people can
better handle pain.
To understand why,a study investigated whether musical training, with its intense practice of fine
motor skills, could influence pain response. The study compared young, healthy musicians and
non-musicians.To safely copy temporary muscie pain, researchers injected (a harmless substance
into a hand muscle, causing aching for several days, especially during movement. They mapped each
participant's brain representation of the hand before the injection, then again two and eight days later,to
observe any changes caused by pain.
The results revealed a clear difference.Even before the pain, the musicians'brain hand maps were
more detailed and refined than those of non-musicians.After the pain was induced ()the musicians
reported feeling less overall discomfort.Crucially, while the non-musicians'brain maps shrank (
greatiy after two days of pain, the musicians'maps remained stable and unchanged.Furthermore,a direct
connection was found:the more hours a musician had spent practising, the less pain fhey felt.
Although this was a small study of 40 people,it clearly showed that musicians'brains respond
differently to pain.Their long-term training appears to provide a buffer()against pain's typical
negative effects, both in their subjective experience and in their brain's motor control areas. This does not
suggest music is a cure for chronic pain. However,it demonstrates that long-term,skilled training can
fundamentally shape our insight of pain. These findings help explain why pain resilience varies between
individuals and could inform new strategies for pain management.
42.What does the underlined word "detrimental"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Helpful.
B.Curable.
C.Bearable.
D.Harmful.
43.How did the researchers conduct the experiment?
A.By collecting daily pain data from participants.
B.By testing musicians'pain tolerance in truining.
C.By recording musicians'daily practice intensity.
D.By comparing participants'brain responses to pain.
44.What was concluded about musicians'brain hand maps after the experiment?
A.They shrank to a large extent.
B.They showed unnoticeable changes.
C.They weren't linked to musical training.
D.They matched non-musicians'post-pain.
45.What is the author's attitude towards the result of the study?
A.Supportive.
B.Indifferent.
C.Critical.
D.Doubtful.
