When I was a kid, I loved climbing tall trees to enjoy the view from up high. I grew up in Florida, a flat place, so I couldn’t climb high things often. But in high school, I fell in love with climbing again. Now I really can’t live without this hobby.
At first, I was impatient. I tried to climb the wall as fast as I could and made quick decisions. But I soon got very tired. Then I knew I had to change my way. Now, before climbing, I think about the path in my mind and feel for holds with my hands. It’s like playing chess—planning moves step by step. When I have difficulty, I ask experienced climbers for help. I learn new skills and make new friends. Being in the climbing club also helps me become more social.
One great thing about climbing is that there is no single right way. There are always new challenges. My partners say I choose unusual ways, but they feel easy and comfortable to me.
I love climbing so much that I often lose track of time and climb for hours. I only care about reaching the top and forget all my worries. Even when my friends are tired and want to stop, I still want to try one more time.
Climbing teaches me patience, teamwork, and determination. I no longer say “I can’t.” I face difficulties with confidence. If one way doesn’t work, I try another. I’m not afraid to make decisions. Climbing makes my body and mind strong, and I learn how to solve problems better.
11. Why couldn’t the writer climb high things often when he was a kid?

On November 25, 2025, China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism introduced the mascot (吉祥物) for the 2026 “Happy Chinese New Year” program—the auspicious horse, or Jixiangma in Chinese. The mascot and its cultural products were created for the 2026 Spring Festival to make the celebrations around the world more enjoyable.
The mascot was designed by a team from the Central Academy of Fine Arts. It draws inspiration from the famous ancient artwork “Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow” from the Eastern Han Dynasty. Guided by scientific advice, the team chose the Zhada three-toed horse, a horse from ancient times, as the model for the mascot. The main color of the horse is Chinese red. Its mane (鬃毛) borrows the look of the famous five-color horses of the Tang Dynasty. It also has traditional patterns like auspicious clouds and ruyi (a symbol of good luck). All these bring out the warm and happy feeling of Chinese New Year.
“The horse is loved across cultures in the world. We hope this mascot will help people in other countries feel a stronger connection to Chinese New Year, Chinese culture, and especially the zodiac (生肖) tradition,” said Lin Cunzhen, head of the team.
Started in 2001, the “Happy Chinese New Year” program has become a cultural brand around the world. Since 2023, it has introduced a mascot each year, themed around the Chinese zodiac animal, to share Chinese culture with the world. Previous (以前的) zodiac mascots, including the auspicious rabbit, auspicious dragon, and auspicious snake, have all received wide acclaim both in China and abroad, winning many likes and shares on social media.
18. Why was the auspicious horse created?
A. To encourage travel around the world. B. To draw attention to Chinese horses.
C. To celebrate the 2026 Spring Festival. D. To study China’s cultural industry.
19. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The importance of horses in China.
B. The introduction to the auspicious horse.

The 2026 CCTV Spring Festival Gala became a big stage for China’s fast-growing robot industry. Four top technology companies — Unitree, Magic Lab, Galaxy General Robotics and Songyan Power — showed many amazing and modern robots. These smart machines soon became one of the most popular topics of the year.
These robots did not just appear anywhere. Instead, they played special and important roles in different shows. In the performance Wu BOT, Unitree robots acted together with young martial artists. They performed perfect stick and nunchakus (双节棍) movements, showing great balance, speed and top-level control. In the short play Grandma’s Favorite, actress Cai Ming worked with a very human-like robot from Songyan Power. Their show was warm and funny, and it proved that technology can help people in daily life. At the same time, in the short film with Shen Teng and Ma Li, a robot from Galaxy General Robotics took part in gentle and natural activities, making high-tech feel close and easy to understand.
The influence of the gala went far beyond the stage itself. According to official news reports, online searches and sales orders for robots rose sharply only a few hours after the show. Many types of robots sold out in minutes, because people’s great interest quickly became real market needs.
As major media pointed out, this strong interest shows an important change: robots are moving from being just something to watch into something people really need. They are no longer just for fun. They are entering homes, care services and factories, with more and more practical uses. Although some people worry that machines might take the place of human warmth, the gala makes it clear that technology and human feelings can work well together.
The 2026 gala is more than just a wonderful visual show. It shows China’s growing power in smart production and artificial intelligence. As robots become a part of everyday life, they will not only bring greater convenience but also spread Chinese culture in a new way. They will connect tradition and new ideas to build a smarter future.

C. The symbols of Chinese New Year.
D. The kinds of horses in Chinese history.
20. What does the underlined word “acclaim” probably mean?
A. Surprise. B. Warning. C. Praise. D. Discussion.
21. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The development of Chinese zodiac culture
B. Program connects young hearts across cultures
C. China’s Spring Festival celebrated around the world
D. Mascot for the 2026 “Happy Chinese New Year” celebration
