In the fall of 2022, my husband got a chance to spend three years in Nanjing teaching international law. When we got to China, I began to study Chinese. It was really hard for me to speak Putonghua.
For me, it wasn’t the grammar. “I want to buy this book” is pretty straightforward: “我想买这本书”. And I could memorize lots of Chinese characters (hanzi). However, many words sound alike but mean something 1 . Take 2 “jiàn” for example, it always leaves me guessing—the warship (舰) or the arrow (箭), to meet (见) or to build (建)?
Then, somewhere along the way, I started talking to people around me in Chinese. I tried to communicate with the women in the markets about how to cook vegetables. Sometimes I talked to taxi drivers about the songs on the radio. Gradually, I could listen to songs and understand the lyrics without 3 . I finally reached the point where I could enjoy living in China without using a dictionary.
Now, as our year is up and we pack up to leave, I’m finding my Chinese 4 . I search Baidu maps in Chinese, keep my mobile phone Contacts in Chinese, and send WeChat messages to Chinese friends in Chinese. But mostly, I don’t worry about my performance anymore and enjoy every experience of speaking Chinese. Every language is different. For me, finally, I’ve learned that the key to learning Chinese is 5 living in China.

He bought a beautiful palace in the mountains to be their summer home, but Araminta thought the empty stone hall was so cold and she felt lonely.
The king was puzzled. He had given his daughter everything that made her happy.
“What else could you possibly want?” the king asked his daughter. Araminta didn’t have an answer because she didn’t know herself.
One day, while walking near a river alone, Araminta noticed a fishing rod resting on a rock. She hooked a worm onto the line and threw it into the water.
She sat on a rock by the river for hours, enjoying the warm sunshine on her skin as she was fishing. When she caught a small fish, she shouted in excitement.
Later that day, she asked her father, “Father, would you buy me a fishing rod?”
“That’s easy enough,” the king replied. “But I don’t understand,” he said. “How could a fishing rod make you so happy?” Araminta simply smiled. “You don’t have to understand,” she said. “Happiness doesn’t always come from expensive things. At this year’s Spring Festival gala, humanoid robots made their unforgettable return. Just like last year, they wowed audiences the moment they appeared on stage.
But there was a world of difference between the two years. “Do you still remember? Last year, the robots could only twirl handkerchiefs and dance Yangko ,” said some people online, not being able to hide their excitement. “It’s unreal!” Everyone can see that China has reached the next level in robotics .
Here’s what the robots did during the show this year. They performed parkour (跑酷) and martial arts like Drunken Fist (醉拳) and nunchaku (双节棍). They made all kinds of difficult flips (空翻) without a single fall. As they had become much more deft (灵活的) with their fingers, they could also hold weapons such as staffs (棍棒) and nunchakus. A human-sized robot even showed off its sword skills at the end of the performance. “These moves are a perfect starting point for developing future robots,” said an expert after the annual New Year event.
How the robots performed as a group was no less amazing. Although they had to move together at high speed, they didn’t fail to keep their formation (队形). It was the first time in the world people had seen anything like this.
So, last year was nothing to be ashamed of—it was where it all began. At the end of the day, the progress made in just one year matters more than anything else. It gives people around the world a glimpse into China’s technology power. As Elon Musk puts it, China is already ahead of the rest of the world in robotics.
True, humanoid robots are still in the early stages, and still don’t have everyday uses yet. But when you look at what’s happened in such a short time, you’ll surely say, “The future is much closer than I had expected.”

“Roses are red. Violets are blue.” As an English poem tells us, most things we see in the world have a certain color. However, if a red rose shrinks (缩小) to the world of nanometers (纳米), chances are you might see it in orange, yellow, or blue, depending on its size. This incredible phenomenon is due to the quantum effect (量子效应).
An element’s properties (性质) are largely determined by how many electrons it has, noted the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. However, when matter shrinks to nanometers, its properties are determined by its size. Based on this effect, Alexei Ekimov from Russia and Louis Brus and Moungi Bawendi from the US received the Nobel Prize in chemistry this year for the discovery and development of quantum dots (量子点), semiconducting nanoparticles (半导体纳米粒子) that are usually 2 to 10 nanometers in size.
“Quantum dots have many fascinating and unusual properties. Importantly, they have different colors depending on their size,” said Johan Aqvist, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry.
Quantum dots absorb light and then release it at another wavelength (波长). The smaller the dot is, the shorter the wavelength is, resulting in a bluer light. Likewise, the larger it is, the redder the light will be.
The research by the three scientists opened up a whole new world for chemistry. The light from quantum dots is pure and bright, providing more convenience and enjoyment in many aspects of our lives.
In hospitals, quantum dots are applied to bioimaging (生物成像) and traceable (可追踪的) drug delivery. They can guide doctors when they remove tumors (肿瘤). The dots are much brighter than traditional organic dyes (染料). In our homes, we enjoy pure and dynamic light from TV and computer displays using QLED technology (Q stands for quantum dots). In labs, chemists make use of light from quantum dots to catalyze (催化) chemical reactions.
Looking ahead, scientists believe that quantum dots could help in the making of tiny sensors and thinner solar cells, as well as in encrypted (加密的) quantum communication. Quantum dots have been benefiting humankind in many ways. However, our exploration of them is still at an early stage.
36.What determines the color of quantum dots?
A.The material they are made of. B.The amount of light they absorb.
C.Their sizes. D.The wavelength they emit.
37.Quantum dots absorb light and release it at a different wavelength. Which accurately explains the relationship between quantum dot size and color?
A.Smaller dots appear bluer. B.Smaller dots appear redder.
C.Larger dots appear bluer. D.Larger dots appear lighter.
38.In what aspects are quantum dots being used in hospitals?
a. Biological imaging b. Write a prescription (开处方)
c. Tumor removal d. Dye usage e. Drug delivery
A.a, b, c B.b, c, e C.a, c, e D.a, d, e
39.According to the article, which of the following statements is correct?
A.Three scientists received the Nobel Prize in chemistry for their discovery of quantum effects.
B.The applications of quantum dots are achieving great success.

This is an unusual truth that anyone older than 25 will already know: as life goes on, time seems to speed up. Think back to childhood when holidays seemed to last forever, and you attended school for what felt like decades. Now, consider last year, by contrast, and it probably raced by. As those in their 30s and 40s will know, the effect gets worse with age—and, for people in their 70s, a year can flash by in what seems like days. “Where did the time go?” we wonder.
The best reason is that we can keep the important facts in mind longer when our brains have to process more information. Childhood and young adulthood are full of novelty (新奇)—the first time you rode a bike, had a romance, got a job—but, as we get older, things get more routine (常规). You can test this out by remembering a recent experience of novelty in your life, such as travel. A few years back, I went skiing for the first time, and that four-day trip still feels “long”. But I might have difficulty noticing a four-day period in my ordinary life.
One way that can work things out, then, is easy to see: try lots of new things. Travel more, if you can, and to strange places. Try new hobbies and meet new people—you’ll be using your brain with a lot of efforts, and the result will be a life that feels longer, more meaningful. But small changes work, too: even making a change in the route (路线) you take to the office, reading different kinds of novels or choosing a different place to buy your sandwich at lunchtime will have an influence on your feelings.
But novelty can only go so far. Besides, a fulfilling (令人满意的) life requires routine: you can’t build deep relationships, or rise through the ranks at work, if you always make new friends or get new jobs or even have new husbands or wives. That’s why the Buddhist teacher Shintzen Young suggests another method: learn to meditate (冥想). Even a few minutes a day will get you to have better concentration (专注), and the better you get at concentrating, the more information your brain will take in during any experience, no matter how boring.
You need to believe in yourself. You’ll be making your whole life a little more novel (新颖的). You’ll be more present and time will pass less quickly; in fact, you’ll make your life longer--without magic pills or creative medical technology.
How to stop time 56 up
The problem
It is not a common truth to anyone who is 57 25 years old that time seems to go faster as life goes on. The 58 you get, the faster time races by.
The 59 of the problem
When things become usual in our life, it might be 60 for you to pay attention to them and soon time passes by. So, experiencing something fresh and special can make you 61 things longer.
Advice on how to solve the problem
It takes you a lot of efforts to use your brain when trying new things, making you feel that your life is longer and 62 more to you.
Changing something a little can also make a difference to your feelings.
Learning to meditate helps people 63 their concentration and take in more information from boring experiences.

Dagney felt 22 and asked, “What kind of gift will take you 10 years to make?”
Grieg smiled and said, “I can make it in a short time, but you can only get it when you grow up.”
Ten years passed and Dagney was 18 years old. One day, she went to an outdoor 23 . The host on the stage said, “The next song is for the daughter of the forest ranger, Dagney.”
Dagney stood up with excitement and saw that the conductor (指挥家) on the stage was the old man she met in the forest 10 years ago!

Once there was a king who had a daughter named Princess Araminta. He loved her deeply and wanted more than anything in the world to make her happy.
He bought her a fine horse, but she didn’t like to ride. He bought her some beautiful and expensive clothes, but Araminta said that they made her neck uncomfortable.
