A.always B.usually C.seldom D.often
【答案】C
【详解】句意:我爷爷很少坐出租车去公园。他更喜欢步行去那里锻炼。

Do you know that we may not be able to see some beautiful places of interest around the world in the future? Let’s have a look at them before they disappear.
The Great Wall, China
The Great Wall has a history of thousands of years. But over half of it was lost and some are disappearing. There are many reasons such as the influence of wind and rain, but the main reason is human activities.
Venice, Italy
The city may not float (漂浮) for much longer because Venice will go underwater in 100 years. Since 1897, sea level in Venice has risen by 30cm because of climate change. Also, Venice faced serious flooding (水灾) in November 2019. Waters rose 1.87 metres above normal.
The Dead Sea
At 416 metres below sea level, the Dead Sea is much saltier than oceans. Everyone will be able to float, even though you can’t swim. But it has lost 1/3 of its surface area in the past 60 years because of the mineral (矿) pollution and farming.
26.Why can everyone float in the Dead Sea?
A.It is 416 metres below sea level. B.It is much saltier than oceans.
C.It has lost 1/3 of its surface area. D.It is because of industry and farming.

Ruth Major is 79 years old. She once worked as a teacher. She has traveled more than 500 miles around the UK with her free bus pass, to pick up rubbish.
In May 2016, Ruth read an article about an activity in France encouraging people to pick up a piece of rubbish a day. She then decided to do something similar in the UK. She began traveling around using her bus pass and named her activity “Beautify Britain”.
In late 2023, Ruth traveled on 59 buses from her home to Berwick-upon-Tweed, picking up rubbish along the way. She had a fantastic time. “Every place is beautiful in some ways. We can all do something to beautify our country,” says Ruth. Ruth thinks Britain is beautiful and everyone should keep it clean and tidy. As she travels in the country, she shares photos of rubbish on the Internet, saying, “We can’t allow the few to make it a mess.”
For the last few years, Ruth has picked up around 100,000 pieces of rubbish and done it all for free with her bus pass. She encourages everyone to pick up a piece of rubbish every day. What’s next for Ruth? She plans to travel across the country again. And she hopes more people will join her.

Bill only thought about himself. He did not care about the Earth. Every morning, he kept the water running when brushing his teeth. When he went to the park, he sometimes stepped on the grass. He even threw rubbish everywhere.
One hot summer night, Bill fell into a deep sleep and had a strange dream. In his dream, he saw a man. The man looked exactly like him, but he was very thin and sick. He kept coughing.
“Come with me,” he said to Bill in a weak voice.
The thin man took Bill to a park. There was rubbish everywhere and the air was full of smoke. The trees were either dead or dying. Bill could not stop coughing.
“This dirty air makes people cough all the time. It’s making our lives terrible,” the man said sadly.
Then the thin man took Bill to the beach. There were plastic bags and empty cans everywhere. They were like strange mountains. The seawater was dirty and full of thick oil.
“All the fish are dead. Most of the birds are dead too,” said the man. “If people keep on polluting the water like this, all the sea animals will die.”
After that, the thin man took Bill to the centre of the city.
“There’s too much traffic. The traffic produces a lot of fumes. They smell terrible and give people a headache. People should take buses or subways to make the air cleaner,” the man said.
Bill was surprised by what he saw.
“What can I do?” he asked the man.
“You can stop causing so much pollution,” said the man. “And you can tell other people to stop too. The pollution has made everyone very thin and weak. If people keep on causing pollution, we’ll all be in great danger soon.” Just then, Bill woke up.

Some people think that they have an answer to the problems of automobile crowding and pollution in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle, or bike.
In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called “Bike for a Better City”. They say that if more people rode bicycles to work, there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown of the city and as a result, less dirty air from car engines (发动机).
For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to paint special lanes (车道)—for bicycles only—on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there may be accidents. “Bike for a Better City” feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.
But no bicycle lanes have been painted yet. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don’t like the idea—they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don’t like the idea—they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.
The city government has not decided what to do yet. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park—the largest open place in New York—is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But “Bike for a Better City” says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown. Until that happens, the safest place to bicycle may be in the park.
37.The underlined word “automobiles” in the second paragraph means ________.
A.cars B.trains C.planes D.ships
38.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Special lanes are needed on every street.
B.The Central Park is closed to cars on weekdays.
C.“Bike for a Better City” members ride bicycles to work.
D.Accidents won’t happen if cars and bikes are on different lanes.
39.No bicycle lanes have been painted yet because ________.
A.the idea isn’t accepted by all
B.the main streets are not wide enough
C.the city government can’t help to paint the lanes
D.there’s no need for most people to travel by bike
40.This passage is mainly about ________.
A.city problems and “Bike for a Better City”
B.“Bike for a Better City” and the city government
C.the government’s idea on traffic and city pollution
D.a suggestion on the city problems of traffic and pollution

Formal dining can be an enjoyable experience. 41 Here are some ideas that can help you to be a well-behaved guest.
42 Keep your elbows (肘) off the table, and chew (咀嚼) with your mouth closed. Never pick your teeth at the table. While it’s OK to use your fingers when eating bread or sandwiches, most foods should be eaten with utensils (餐具).

If you don’t know what to do at the table, just begin with your napkin (餐巾). 44 Whenever you need to excuse yourself, leave it in your seat.
When you sit down, you’ll find forks on your left as well as knives and spoons on your right. These utensils will be in different shapes and sizes, but don’t be worried! Just begin with the outer utensils and work towards the middle. 45
When the meal is over, tidy up your napkin and put it down to the left of you. Before you leave, be sure to express your thankfulness to your host.
A.Still, if you’re uncertain what to do, simply follow your host’s lead, and you can’t go wrong.

Man has been polluting the Earth. The more people there are, the more pollution there will be. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true.
Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only kind of pollution. Water pollution kills fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city. They also stop people from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is mainly caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
