A landform is a natural mixture (混合) of rocks (岩石) and soil of the Earth’s surface. Landforms come in different kinds of shapes. Mountains, hills, plateaus and plains are the four main kinds of landforms.
Landforms are formed by some kinds of forces of nature. These forces could be from wind, water or ice. For example, valleys used to be high hills, but as time went by, water and winds eroded (侵蚀) the high land away, and then valleys were formed.
What are the differences among the landforms? Valleys are located between hills or with many high mountains around. Deltas (三角洲) can be found at the mouths of rivers. They are created when sand, soil, and rocks carried by rivers are mixed together. Hills and mountains are another two landforms. Mountains are usually higher than hills. Most mountains are like towers, but a few of them are like tables which have flat tops.

1.What is a landform according to the text?
2.What forces could form landforms?
3.How are deltas created?
4.What can we know about the mountains? (写出一个答案即可)
5.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?

When the Yellow River runs through mountains to Hukou, the river narrows (变窄) from 300 meters to just over 50 meters. The water suddenly falls into a deep pool. As a result, a wonderful waterfall appears. It seems that the water pours into a big pot, which is how it got the name “Hukou”.
The power of the waterfall is tremendous (巨大的) when it falls, so it is hard for you to get close to the main waterfall. Looking from far away, you can enjoy the amazing fog-covered water. The beauty cannot be described in words. You cannot know unless you visit it in person.
There are four wonders of Hukou, “smoking in water”, “colourful bridge to the sky”, “dragons playing with waves” and “thunder generated from valley stream”. The waterfall flies straight down with water splashing (溅), clouds and mist rising. Under the sunlight, you will see a rainbow hanging over the waterfall. Saihanba is a forest park in the north of Hebei. It is about 400 km from Beijing. For hundreds of years, the emperors went there to hunt. In the 1800s, things began to change. There were forest fires and wars, and people cut too many trees. Saihanba slowly turned into a desert.
When the forest disappeared, there were terrible sandstorms in the Beijing area. In the early 1960s, a group of scientists travelled to Saihanba to find a solution. They found an old tree in the middle of the desert. “Maybe we can still plant trees here,” they thought. In 1962, the first tree planters arrived in Saihanba. The cold and dry weather made their work very difficult, and strong winds blew away many young trees. In winter, it got as cold as -40℃.
Three generations (代) of forest workers continued the hard work. Thanks to them, Saihanba is green again. It is today the world’s biggest man-made forest.
