Inner painting, a traditional Chinese art, is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). Artists create works on the inner surface of the glass bottle with special brushes, which need to be thin enough to enter the tiny bottles. These miniature masterpieces (微型杰作) often carry deep cultural meanings. The designs on the painting stand for people’s wishes for good luck and a happy life. The most popular ones are landscapes, followed by flowers and birds. Creating an inner painting requires great skills. Artists must work through the bottle’s narrow neck and carefully paint inside in a reverse order. They start with foreground details before adding backgrounds, opposite to the usual way of painting. In this way, the final artwork looks proper and correct when it is seen from the outside. Inner painting also needs high accuracy and patience. Any mistake means a complete restart. “It’s just like trying to draw a straight line when the ground is shaking,” an inner painting artist says. Most artists need years of training before creating great and fine pieces. They usually spend 2-3 years just practicing drawing basic lines. Though inner painting has its cultural value and unique beauty, it still faces difficulties such as low interest among young people, limited market needs and fewer learners. Luckily, artists are trying to make it closer to our life. It is now used on everyday objects, like tea sets. A new type of brush has been invented to improve drawing speed. Young artists even make use of social media to spread their painting skills. Li Mei, for example, showed inner painting skills on social media and successfully attracted over 500,000 followers. “We hope it can be respected as a heritage but still alive in daily life,” Li explains. They also expect inner painting courses to be offered at school for young people to take in the near future. 1.What kind of brush is used for inner painting? A.Brushes made of glass. B.Thick and short brushes. C.Extremely thin brushes. D.Brushes with sharp ends. 2.Which of the following themes might be the most popular design for inner painting? A.Living creatures.B.Natural scenery. C.Famous people. D.Historical events. 3.The underlined word “reverse” in Paragraph 3 probably means _________. A.Other tools and special materials are needed for inner painting. B.Artists need to work together as a team to finish the perfect artwork. C.Inner painting is such a difficult task that it needs skills and patience. D.It is very dangerous for the artists to take up inner painting. 5.How many ways have the artists tried to save inner painting in the last paragraph? A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four. 6.What is the main purpose of the passage? A.To explain technical steps of creating the inner painting. B.To show the value and challenges of a traditional art. C.To compare different Chinese intangible cultural heritages. D.To call on us to save the traditional Chinese art together. In the high-tech laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a team of engineers recently achieved a remarkable milestone. They successfully grew the first fully digital, living plant—a hybrid of a Venus flytrap and a rose—by using a revolutionary bio-engineering technique called “cyber-agriculture.” This new life form, named “Rosa Digitalis,” can not only perform photosynthesis like a normal plant but also connect to the Internet. Through sensors embedded in its leaves, it can analyze environmental data, such as air quality and soil conditions, and then send real-time reports to a cloud-based server. More astonishingly, its unique neural network allows it to learn from the data and even communicate with other “smart plants” via a low-frequency signal. While the creators believe this innovation could lead to self-regulating urban farms that require minimal human intervention, some environmentalists express concern, arguing that introducing such genetically engineered species into the natural ecosystem might have unpredictable consequences, potentially disturbing the existing natural balance and outcompeting natural plants. 1.What is the primary function of the sensors in the Rosa Digitalis’ leaves? A.To perform photosynthesis more efficiently. B.To connect the plant to the Internet. C.To gather and send environmental information. D.To communicate with other plants. 2.The phrase “cyber-agriculture” in the passage most likely refers to ________. A.growing plants in a virtual reality environment B.using computer technology to control natural plant growth C.creating new plant species that combine biology with digital technology D.an online platform for sharing agricultural techniques 3.How do the Rosa Digitalis plants communicate with each other? A.By sharing data through the cloud server. B.By using a low-frequency signal. C.Through a neural network directly linked to human brains. D.By emitting a type of light wave. 4.According to the passage, which of the following is a potential benefit of this innovation? A.It can help create farms that largely manage themselves. B.It will completely replace traditional farming. C.It can eliminate the need for natural sunlight. D.It can solve all air pollution problems. 5.What is the main concern of the environmentalists mentioned in the passage? A.The high cost of producing such plants. B.The potential threat to the natural ecological balance. C.The energy consumption of the cloud server. D.The lack of public interest in the technology. 6.The author’s attitude toward the development of “Rosa Digitalis” can best be described as ________. A.completely supportive B.strongly opposed C.objectively reporting both benefits and concerns D.indifferent and uninterested Wheel Have Fun! In science class today, we watched a program called Sleeping in the Wild, and it was really interesting! It showed that animals sleep in many different ways. Some sleep almost the whole day, while others hardly sleep at all. I found these differences quite surprising. Which animal sleeping habit do you think is the most interesting?Leave a comment below!                                                          Jasmine·2 hours ago Hi Olivia! I was most surprised by koalas! The program said they can sleep 18 to 22 hours a day, which is almost the whole day! At first, I thought they were just lazy animals. But then the program explained why. Koalas mainly eat eucalyptus leaves, and these leaves provide very little energy. Because of that, they need a lot of sleep to save energy and stay healthy. So actually, their long sleeping time is a way to survive. I didn’t expect that! Reply                                                                        Sophie·50 mins ago For me, sloths are the most amazing sleepers. They can sleep about 20 hours a day and spend most of their lives hanging from tree branches in tropical forests. The program explained that staying high in the trees helps them avoid predators on the ground. Even though sloths move very slowly, their lifestyle actually protects them and helps them survive in their environment. Pretty cool, right? Reply                                                                        Jason·20 mins ago I think dolphins have the most unique sleeping habit. Unlike humans, they cannot fall into a deep sleep for a long time. Instead, only half of their brain sleeps at a time, while the other half stays awake. This way, they can keep swimming and come up to the surface to breathe. They even sleep with one eye open to watch for danger in the ocean. Nature really comes up with amazing solutions! Reply                                                                        1.The main purpose of Olivia’s post is ______. A.to describe her science class in detail B.to show the most interesting animals in nature C.to introduce a program and start a discussion about it D.to compare the sleeping habits of animals and humans 2.Koalas sleep for such a long time because ______. A.they are very lazy animals B.they feel safer when sleeping C.they are active only at night D.their food provides little energy 3.The underlined word “predators” means animals that ______. A.hunt and eat other animals B.live together in groups C.sleep during the daytime D.move very slowly in forests 4.How do dolphins manage to stay safe while sleeping? A.They take turns sleeping. B.They sleep in deep water. C.Half of their brain stays awake. D.Both of their eyes are open. 5.Which of the following is FALSE? A.Sleeping in the Wild explained the reasons behind different sleeping habits. B.The program changed Olivia’s understanding about koalas. C.Sleeping high in trees helps sloths stay safe in the wild. D.Dolphins keep swimming while sleeping. 6.What can we learn from the forum post? A.All animals need long sleep to survive. B.Different animals sleep in different ways to survive. C.Animals in forests sleep longer than those in other places. D.Most animals sleep in the same way as humans. 重难语篇练习 Life in the Future: A World Shaped by Technology The rapid development of technology is greatly changing the world. From homes to transportation, education to healthcare, the future promises a world where convenience and innovation go hand in hand. Let’s explore what daily life might look like in the year 2040. Smart Homes: Living with Intelligence Imagine waking up to a room that changes its lighting and temperature automatically based on your sleep patterns. Smart mirrors in the bathroom analyze your health data and suggest a balanced breakfast menu. Robots do chores like cleaning and cooking, while AI systems manage energy use, reducing waste by 40%. Even pets are cared for by automated feeders and interactive toys. “My home feels like a personal assistant,” says Lucy, a resident of a smart apartment in Shanghai. However, some worry about privacy risks, as devices collect large amounts of personal information. Revolutionary Transportation: Faster and Greener Gone are the days of traffic jams. Maglev trains (磁悬浮列车) can travel at 600 km/h, connecting cities in a short time. For shorter trips, self-driving electric cars can communicate with each other on the road to avoid accidents. Meanwhile, “sky taxis” offer a bird’s-eye view of cities, though they require strict air traffic control. The biggest highlight is the Hyperloop which makes it possible to travel from Beijing to Shanghai in just one hour. Still, challenges remain, such as the high cost of building underground tunnels. Education and Healthcare: Personalized and Accessible Classrooms have transformed into virtual (虚拟的) worlds. Students wear VR headsets to “visit” ancient civilizations or do chemistry experiments in 3D labs. AI tutors provide instant feedback (反馈) giving each student’s proper lessons to learn. “Learning feels like an adventure now,” says 14-year-old Tom. In healthcare, wearable devices record heart rates and blood sugar levels 24/7. Telemedicine enables doctors to examine patients from a distance, and robots accurately assist in surgeries. Genetic engineering even helps prevent diseases before birth. Yet, relying too much on technology raises concerns. “Young people spend less time outdoors, which affects their mental health,” warns psychologist Dr. Lee. Challenges: Balancing Progress and Humanity Future life has benefits but also challenges. Hackers increasingly target smart systems, raising security risks. People grow more isolated as they use screens more than communicating face-to-face. While electric cars reduce pollution, mining rare materials harms nature. Tech ethicist Maria Gonzalez warns, “Technology should help humans, not rule us.” Conclusion The future is a mixture of wonders and warnings. Technology will undoubtedly make life easier, healthier, and more exciting. However, it’s crucial to address its risks wisely. By embracing innovation while valuing human connection and nature, we can build a future that’s not only smart but also sustainable and humane. 1.What is one function of smart mirrors mentioned in the article? A.Playing music automatically. B.Suggesting breakfast menus based on health data. C.Controlling air traffic for drones. D.Mining rare materials for electric vehicles. 2.What is the main purpose of the article? A.To warn people of the dangers of future technology. B.To describe how technology will change daily life and its challenges. C.To advertise specific future products like maglev trains. D.To explain the history of AI development. 3.What does the word “isolated” mean in the context of the article? A.个别的 B.孤立的,孤独的 C.偏远的 D.活跃的 4.Which technique does the author NOT use to present the future transportation? A.Providing data. B.Using words from experts or real-life residents. C.Comparing the future with the present D.Giving examples. 5.What is a major challenge mentioned about the Hyperloop? A.It requires passengers to wear VR headsets. B.It is too noisy for urban areas. C.The high cost of building underground tunnels. D.It cannot operate in cold weather. 6.How is the article organized? A.It lists technologies first, then discusses challenges, and concludes with a balance. B.It compares past and present technologies. C.It focuses only on transportation advancements. D.It criticizes technology without offering solutions. Should You Pay to Volunteer?                            Last updated on December 20,2024 Janet Harper I’ve never paid to volunteer, but there are actually volunteer programs which volunteers pay to sign up for. Do you think people should pay to volunteer? Leave your comments below. Molly Green There is no straight answer to this difficult question. I would separate two types of volunteering, namely skilled and generic (普通的). Skilled volunteers are those who spend their time providing a service connected to their career skills. I firmly believe that those people shouldn’t pay and, in some cases, deserve at least a small living allowance (津贴) or free accommodation (住宿). For example, I have been volunteering full-time for some international organizations using my law skills. This is the kind of volunteering that should be free. Generic volunteers are those who go to a school, camp or village to spend only a few weeks. They are really valuable, but they might work part-time and their duties are usually related to amusement for children. Sometimes I agree that they should pay a fee as they are a small burden (负担) for the organization. Natalie James I’ve never actually paid to volunteer, though I’ve volunteered overseas with Peace Corps (维和部队). I’ve been looking for other long-term international volunteer programs. For me ,personally, I can’t afford to provide long-term service if the living costs aren’t covered. However, I would also consider short-term programs. There are a couple of things you need to know to be comfortable working with a volunteer organization: (1) Who is running the program? (2) Could there be any harmful side effects of your service? (3) Is the program sustainable (可持续的)?    My advice to people is: ________, especially when overseas, to make sure it’s worth it. Susan McGay At the agency (服务机构) I work for, the program fee covers housing, meals and sometimes even language classes. But, most importantly, it includes 24/7 support. With all of these, volunteers are not necessarily “paying to volunteer,” but paying for a program with valuable support. It helps you succeed as a volunteer. Ashley Wright I used to think volunteering should be free, until I signed up for a month in a jungle looking after two pumas named Simba and Sonko. Yes, I paid for it, and I’m glad I did as I could see exactly where my money went: into the caring of those beautiful cats. The pumas can’t return to the wild because they might be killed by hunters. Have your eyes wide open if you choose to pay for volunteering, you can ask questions, but don’t say “no” to this idea as you might be missing out on the experience of your lifetime! 1.Janet Harper ________. A.has never taken part in a paid volunteer program B.suggests people choose paid volunteer programs C.agrees that paid volunteer programs are better than the free ones D.encourages more people to sign up for meaningful volunteer programs. 2.Which of the following people has paid to volunteer? A.Molly Green. B.Natalie James. C.Susan McGay. D.Ashley Wright. 3.According to Molly Green, ________. A.generic volunteers should be paid for their hard work B.generic volunteers are not as important as skilled volunteers C.skilled volunteers make good use of their career skills in their volunteer work D.skilled volunteers must be provided with a living allowance and free accommodation 4.According to Susan McGay ________. A.only paid volunteer programs are good ones B.the more a volunteer agency charges, the better support it provides C.a volunteer actually pays to receive support to become a successful volunteer D.a paid volunteer can have free housing and free meals, but not free language classes 5.Choose the best phrase to fill in the blank in the “Natalie James” part. My advice to people is: ________, especially when overseas, to make sure it’s worth it. A.Always do your research before volunteering B.Don’t take part in any paid volunteer programs C.Always be sure you have enough money for your volunteer trips D.Gain as much volunteer experience as possible before signing up for paid volunteer programs 6.According to the article, which of the following statements is true? A.Susan McGay is in favor of paid volunteer programs. B.It has never occurred to Ashley Wright that volunteering should be free. C.Natalie James doesn’t want to take part in short-term volunteer programs. D.Molly Green lists a few important things to know before one signs up for a volunteer program. A.重复的 B.渐进的 C.复杂的 D.反向的 4.What can we infer from the sentence “It’s just like trying to draw a straight line when the ground is shaking”? 【答案】1.C 2.B 3.D 4.C 5.C 6.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了中国传统艺术“内画”的价值和面临的挑战。 1.根据题干关键词“brush”可定位至首段尾句“Artists create works…with special brushes, which need to be thin enough to enter the tiny bottles.”,“which”引导限制性定语从句修饰“brush”,刷子要足够细才能伸进小瓶子。C选项“Extremely thin brushes”契合文意。 2.定位到第二段“The most popular ones are landscapes, followed by flowers and birds.”说明最受欢迎的是以风景为主题的作品,其次是以花和鸟为主题的作品”。B项“Natural scenery”和“landscape”属于同义替换,符合;A项“living creature”并非最欢迎的,排除。 3.根据下文“They start with foreground details before adding backgrounds, opposite to the usual way of painting.”关键词“opposite to”表示和常规顺序相反,因此“reverse”指“反向的”。 4.“It’s just like trying to draw a straight line when the ground is shaking”就好比在地面晃动时画直线,强调的是创作内画的难度,这需要高度的耐心和技巧。 5.定位到“Luckily, artists are trying to make it closer to our life.”第一个方式“ It is now used on everyday objects, like tea sets”;第二个方式“A new type of brush has been invented to improve drawing speed.”;第三个方式“Young artists even make use of social media to spread their painting skills.”;接下来是第三个方式的举例说明,所以一共提到了三种方式。 6.文章主体重在介绍内画的文化价值与所面临的挑战,并列举挽救措施,B项符合。 ABC Travel Company Video-making CompetitionThe theme of the competition is “Festivals of Our City”. A.completely supportive B.strongly opposed C.objectively reporting both benefits and concerns D.indifferent and uninterested 【答案】1.C 2.C 3.B 4.A 5.B 6.C 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了麻省理工学院工程师培育出的名为“Rosa Digitalis”的数字活植物,说明了它的功能、技术原理,以及这项创新带来的潜在益处和环保人士的担忧。 1.第二段提到“Through sensors embedded in its leaves, it can analyze environmental data, such as air quality and soil conditions, and then send real-time reports to a cloud-based server.”,说明叶片中传感器的主要功能是收集并发送环境信息。 2.第一段提到用名为“cyber-agriculture”的生物工程技术培育出了捕蝇草和玫瑰的杂交数字活植物,结合后文植物可联网、分析数据等描述,可知该词指的是创造结合生物学与数字技术的新植物物种。 3.第三段明确说明“its unique neural network allows it to learn from the data and even communicate with other ‘smart plants’ via a low-frequency signal.”,可知这类植物通过低频信号相互交流。 4.第三段提到“this innovation could lead to self-regulating urban farms that require minimal human intervention”,说明这项创新的潜在益处是可以帮助创建基本能自我管理的农场。 5.第三段提到环保人士的担忧:“introducing such genetically engineered species into the natural ecosystem might have unpredictable consequences, potentially disturbing the existing natural balance and outcompeting natural plants”,可知他们的主要担忧是对自然生态平衡的潜在威胁。 6.作者既介绍了这项创新的功能、潜在益处,也客观呈现了环保人士的担忧,没有偏向性,因此作者的态度是客观报道利弊。 Wheel Have Fun! He yawned (打哈欠) and picked it up. “Hello?” he said. “I’ll take the case. I’ll leave at once.” Drake took his umbrella, as it was raining outside, and walked out into the noisy city. ► The Case Drake hurried to the police station. “We’ve been getting unfinished math problems in the mail.” the Chief said. “They’re signed ‘Guessss Who?’. Every day, the number of letters increases. We keep getting more. They are blocking the mail room.” Drake looked at the paper in the Chief’s hand. He looked at one letter’s clue carefully: □  Guessss Who? ► Gathering Clues “The word ‘guess’ isn’t spelled right,” Drake said thoughtfully. “Give me the letters, Chief,” he said. “And if someone asks you, say that I’ve advised you not to discuss the case.” Drake took the clues and went back to his office. He filled in the missing numbers in a notebook: 1 1 5 5 5 8 10 11 11 14 19 20 “Is it a code?” he thought. “Maybe it’s an alphabet code!” Drake shouted. 【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.C 5.B 6.B 【导语】本文是一则网络论坛评论,众人围绕纪录片里野生动物的睡眠方式,分享看法并解释背后生存原因。 1.第一栏引出话题:“we watched a program called Sleeping in the Wild”以及“Which animal sleeping habit do you think is the most interesting”,能看出Olivia发帖是为介绍节目并发起相关讨论。 2.第二栏说明缘由:“these leaves provide very little energy”,点明考拉长时间睡眠是因为食物能量供给极少。 3.第三栏进行词义诠释:“helps them avoid predators on the ground”,结合树懒待在树上躲避地面危险,可推断predators指代捕食其他动物的野兽。 4.第四栏介绍生存方式:“only half of their brain sleeps at a time, while the other half stays awake”,体现海豚睡觉时靠一半大脑保持清醒来保障自身安全。 5.第二栏说明:“At first, I thought they were just lazy animals. But then the program explained why...So actually, their long sleeping time is a way to survive. I didn’t expect that!”,文中是Jasmine而非Olivia改变了对考拉的认知,因此B项表述错误。 6.综合全文内容归纳:各类动物有着不同睡眠习惯,都是为了适应环境、生存下去。 重难语篇练习 Life in the Future: A World Shaped by Technology The rapid development of technology is greatly changing the world. 【答案】1.A 2.D 3.C 4.C 5.A 6.A 【导语】本文是一篇议论文,围绕人们是否应该付费参加志愿活动展开讨论,不同的人给出了不同的观点和看法。 1.“Janet Harper”部分指出“I’ve never paid to volunteer, but there are actually volunteer programs which volunteers pay to sign up for.”以及“Do you think people should pay to volunteer? Leave your comments below.”,这直接说明Janet Harper从未参加过付费志愿项目,并引出关于是否应付费志愿的讨论。 2.“Ashley Wright”部分提到“I used to think volunteering should be free, until I signed up for a month in a jungle looking after two pumas named Simba and Sonko. Yes, I paid for it”,以Ashley Wright在丛林照顾美洲狮并付费为例,说明她付费参加了志愿活动。 3. “Molly Green” 部分提到“Skilled volunteers are those who spend their time providing a service connected to their career skills.”以及“For example, I have been volunteering full-time for some international organizations using my law skills. This is the kind of volunteering that should be free.”,说明有技能的志愿者在志愿工作中充分利用了他们的职业技能。 4.“Susan McGay”部分提到“At the agency (服务机构) I work for, the program fee covers housing, meals and sometimes even language classes. But, most importantly, it includes 24/7 support. With all of these, volunteers are not necessarily “paying to volunteer,” but paying for a program with valuable support. It helps you succeed as a volunteer.”,以Susan McGay所在机构收费提供支持帮助志愿者成功为例,说明志愿者实际上是付费获得支持以成为成功的志愿者。 5.“Natalie James”部分提到“There are a couple of things you need to know to be comfortable working with a volunteer organization: (1) Who is running the program? (2) Could there be any harmful side effects of your service? (3) Is the program sustainable (可持续的)?”,说明在参加志愿活动前要了解一些事情,即做研究,所以“Always do your research before volunteering”符合语境,强调在志愿前做研究确保值得。 6.“Susan McGay”部分提到“At the agency (服务机构) I work for, the program fee covers housing, meals and sometimes even language classes. But, most importantly, it includes 24/7 support. With all of these, volunteers are not necessarily “paying to volunteer,” but paying for a program with valuable support.
