In April 2026, Sony AI announced a great scientific progress from its important research project, Project Ace. The full results of the research on the advanced self-moving table tennis robot Ace were officially published in Nature. This drew much attention from technology experts and AI researchers all over the world.
For many years, traditional table tennis robots had clear technical limits. They could only work in simple conditions, such as slower ball speed and less spin. Most early robots depended on fixed ball paths from serving machines and could not deal with the flexible and changeable ways of real human players. So, no robot before could compete fairly with well-trained sportsmen under official competition rules.
However, the Ace robot has professional equipment and a high-precision sensing system. A flexible high-speed robot arm lets it change hitting angles and strength at once, just like a real player. At the same time, many high-speed cameras working together act as eyes, catching the ball’s real-time speed, flying path and complex spin very quickly and accurately. This advanced equipment allows the robot to watch the court and react much faster than humans.
Ace also uses a key physical AI technology called model-free reinforcement learning. Instead of following fixed movements, the robot keeps collecting match information, studies the opponents’ playing ways, and changes its own plans by itself during real games. It can flexibly deal with fast attacks and difficult spins in dynamic matches.
In formal tests, all games followed full International Table Tennis Federation rules and were watched by professional referees. Ace beat three out of five excellent players in standard matches. However, it lost to professional players, showing that there is still a gap between the robot and top human sportsmen. It is still known as the first physical robot in history to reach the level of real human experts in standard competitive sports.
This success shows the great potential of physical AI in dealing with real-world dynamic tasks. Its key technologies can be used in smart factories, home service robots and high-precision medical tools, pushing the fast development of future intelligent technology.

On April 27, 2026, a famous tech deal(交易) was canceled, because Chinese regulators refused Meta’s plan to buy Manus, an AI company that has attracted much attention from tech and investment circles around the world.
The deal was first made public in late December 2025. It was worth $2 billion and was the third biggest business purchase in Meta’s history.
Manus was founded in March 2025. It mainly develops smart AI agents that can deal with difficult practical tasks, not just simple chat. Based on domestic technical research and professional talents, the platform was once very popular online. Although the company later moved its headquarters to Singapore and stopped its services in the mainland, its core technology was built on early domestic research and development.
The failure of such a big cross-border deal shows a growing trend in the global industry. As AI is developing into an important high-tech field, many major countries have made stricter checks on cross-border tech deals. The reason for reasonable supervision is to protect independent technological achievements and stop core technical assets from being lost improperly, not to target foreign companies on purpose.
This typical case tells us a common rule in the digital age: we should never get global technological openness by giving up core industrial security. China always accepts legal foreign investment and international tech cooperation, but it also insists on protecting its own key technologies according to global industrial rules. Keeping a balance between international cooperation and technological self-protection has become a necessary choice for major tech powers.

On April 17, 2026, China’s market watchdogs started a big nationwide check and gave a huge fine of 3.597 billion yuan to seven major online food platforms. The fine was for allowing many illegal “ghost food vendors(幽灵外卖)” to sell all kinds of food online. This is the biggest punishment ever given to internet platforms for food safety problems since China updated its Food Safety Law in 2015.
The problem began with a customer complaint in summer 2025. Someone ordered a birthday cake online but found it had unsafe decorations and serious hygiene issues. This report made people worried and led to a full national investigation, which found a large illegal network in online food selling.
Officials confirmed that ghost vendors only exist online. They have no real stores and no legal licenses. They use fake papers to sign up on apps and send orders to unlicensed kitchens. Because they fight hard to offer the lowest prices, these kitchens cut costs in dangerous ways—ignoring safety rules and putting people’s health at risk.
After 10 months of checks across the country, authorities found 67,604 bad online sellers and over 3.6 million unsafe cake orders. New rules have now been put in place to better watch the whole online food industry.
Besides health dangers, this case also shows the harm of too much price-cutting. When sellers only care about low prices, they often lower food quality to win customers—a harmful cycle.
This campaign is pushing the industry to stop fighting over cheap prices and start focusing on good quality. It sends a clear message: food safety must never be ignored. Only fair competition, proper rules, and strong supervision can help online food services grow in a healthy way.

Do you ever feel out of control while scrolling through your phone? For the first time, tech companies behind social media platforms are being held responsible for teenagers' social media addiction.
On March 25, a US jury decided that Meta and Google must pay $6 million (about 41 million yuan) for causing a young woman's addiction and harming her mental health. The 20-year-old woman said she became addicted to YouTube at age 6 and Instagram at age 9. This affected both her health and her relationships with her family and at school.
Bringing cases about social media to trial has been challenging. Over the years, under US law, tech companies have not been held legally responsible for what their users post.
In this case, the young woman's lawyer, Mark Lanier, focused on how the platforms are designed. He argued that features like scrolling make it easy for people to become addicted to these apps.
He also added that Meta's research had shown Instagram can be bad for teenagers' mental health, especially girls. But instead of fixing the problem, the company has continued to develop features that increase the time children spend on its apps.
This case is not just about one lawsuit. It shows a growing change “in the public's perception of social media companies and their responsibilities in keeping young people safe on their platforms”, noted AFP. For many years, tech companies have made money by targeting children while hiding the addictive and harmful features of their products.
Yet this is not just a problem in the US. The Australian government said big tech firms are not following rules about children under 16 using social media. China has also taken steps such as a teen mode and time limits to fight against addiction.
1.Why did the young woman take legal action against Meta and Google?
A. Because of harmful online posts.
B. Because of her school problems.
C. Because of social media addiction.
D. Because of concerns about her privacy.
2.What did the lawyer Mark Lanier argue in the case?
A. Platforms should check users' posts.
B. Governments should make new laws.
C. Platforms should not allow children to use them.
D. Platforms should not design addictive features.
3. What change does the case show?
A. People's views on tech companies.
B. Tech companies' safety.
C. The ways teens relax.
D. New national safety rules.
4.Why are Australia and China mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To present actions taken by other countries.
B. To compare different solutions.
C. To show that the US is taking the lead.
D. To show that the problem is global.

Young Chinese diver Quan Hongchan has always appeared carefree in the public eye. She enjoys collecting cute toys, and her lively spirit brings happiness to those around her.
However, in Quan's recent interview with Renwu magazine, she appeared stressed and upset. The 19-year-old shared how her mental struggle - largely due to online bullying over her looks - is driving her to think about retiring. Over the past few years, she has been dealing with the physical changes that come with puberty, a common challenge for female divers. Since the 2024 Paris Olympics, she has grown about 15 centimeters taller and put on around 10 kilograms.
While Quan's growth is natural, it has still surprised her. Every extra kilogram lowers her takeoff height in diving by two centimeters and affects her balance in the air. Online insults toward her and even her family and body-shaming words have hurt her more. “For a long time, I didn't dare to wear skirts or shorts I like, always trying to hide my body in long clothes,” she said.
As a three-time Olympic gold winner, Quan has long been called a natural diver. However, her success comes at a cost. To control her weight, she avoids her favorite snacks and follows a strict diet. Long hours of aerobic exercise for weight loss have slowed down the recovery of her old injuries. When she competed at the National Games last year, she was in pain and had to put ice packs on her legs.
The online abuse she received has drawn wide attention to unhealthy fan culture in sports, and led officials to take legal action against cyberbullying. “Cyberbullying is not a joke or free speech. It causes great harm and is against the law,” an article in China Daily stated.

A. Because she can't find the right clothes.
B. Because it reduces her balance while she is diving.
C. Because it stops her from growing taller.
D. Because it makes her get injured easily.
4.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How online comments hurt Quan. B. How Quan fought against bullying.
C. What price Quan pays for her success. D. Why Quan tried to lose weight.
5.Why was the story written?
A. To explain the effects of puberty.
B. To teach readers how to deal with online bullying.

1.What does the underlined word “carefree” in Paragraph 1 most likely mean?
A. Stressed. B. Confident. C. Having no worries. D. Not caring about anything.
2.What is mainly hurting Quan Hongchan, according to her interview with Renwu magazine?
A. Online bullying. B. Her physical changes.
C. Stressful training. D. Fear of losing competitions.
3.Why could Quan's weight gain be a problem for her?
