Is there anything sponges can't do?For many years, humans have used dried
pore
natural sponges to paint, clean up and take in water. They are good at catching
tiny particles()in their many pores. Now,as scientists around the world are
beginning to show,sponges'pore-filled forms mean that they could offer a solution to
a big challenge of our time:microplastic(微塑料)pollution.
Recently,Chinese researchers published a study describing their development of a new man-made
sponge.Tests show that when a plastic-filled liquid (is pushed through the sponge,it removes the
microplastics from the liquid.Though the effectiveness of sponges differed in experiments depending on
the concentration()of the plastics and the nature of the liquid, researchers could remove up to 90%
of the microplastics under the most favourable conditions.
These new sponges are made mostly from starch(锭粉)and gelatin(明胶),making them light and
easy to transport.According to a materials chemist at Ocean University of China who got involved in the
study, researchers can make sponges more or less porous-by changing the temperature when mixing the
ingredients. This decides what size of particles can be collected-highly porous sponges have lots of very
small pores, which is good for catching very tiny particles.
According to the chemist, the sponges,if produced at an industrial level, could be used in
wastewater treatment plants or in food production equipment to take away harmful chemicals."It would
also be possible to use sponges like this in washing machines to collect microplastics produced when
clothes are washed,"suggests a chemist from Zurich.
Yet challenges remain. One of them is that starch and gelatin are important to the food industry,
meaning that there could be competition for the key ingredients in the future. However, similar sponges
can be made with different materials, such as the sugar taken from the shells of certain ocean animals
Another challenge is that during the process of producing these new sponges,formaldehyde-a
highly harmful chemical-is used.Scientists around the world are working to upgrade the production so
狗
that they can make a completely environmentally friendly sponge.
p
As microplastic pollution is getting more serious, these new sponges give us reason to be hopeful.

A.take microplastics out of a liquid
B.test the nature of the plastics in a liquid
C.change the temperature of a plastic-filled liquid
D.replace plastics with harmless materials in a liquid
)28.What can we learn from the passage?
A.It's difficult to find the ingredients for the new sponges.
B.The new sponges would increase food production in factories
C.The production of the new sponges is environmentally friendly.
D.How porous sponges are decides what size of particles can be collected.

These are typical "textspeak".In casual discussions of language and the Internet,it's common to
hear concerns that"textspeak"is ruining language. Some argue that technology has made us lazy in our
speaking and writing. However, has "textspeak"truly destroyed our language?
Indeed, language change is very common in history.Whether in ancient Rome or modern times,
people often feel worried about how language changes, but they also slowly adapt to it.In AD 63,a
端
Roman scholar was unhappy with new elements in Latin, calling it an "artificial language".He didn't
realize that this language would later develop into early French.
Similarly, even though people have many concerns about language change, the natural development
of language is unavoidable. The US president Theodore Roosevelt supported changes to American English
巡0

spelling in 1906.These included changing“-re”endings to“-er"(such as changing“theatre”to“theater”)
and“-our”to“-or”(like changing“colour”to“color'”).
题)均
Fast forward to today, where rapid communication is enabled by a variety of tools and technologies.
国
Among these, emoticons like:-)"serve as visual representations of smiling and happiness. The very
first emoticon, created by computer scientist Scott Fahlman in 1982,was used to suggest a joke in text
communication. These symbols offer information about the tone()of a statement, making digital
communication more expressive.
For example, punctuation and repeated letters can express strong emotions.A text message
like"JACK I AM SOSOSO SORRY!I thought you were behind us in the taxi and then I saw you weren't !!
Ifeel soooooooo bad!”shows sincere apology(道歉)through its style.
In digital communication,we often use a single symbol to send a fast but complete message.Linguist
Susan Herring points out that sometimes a single question mark(?)is used to suggest that the user is
confused or doesn't know what to say.Similarly,a single exclamation point(!)as a message can express
surprise and excitement. You can repeat these symbols to show a higher degree of surprise. Here is an
example:
A:So I have some good news.
B:?
A:I got a raise today.
B:1
A:And it came with a promotion(升职).
B:111
Furthermore, studies have shown that people often switch between formal and informal language
depending on the context.Texting might be informal, but people can still switch to more formal language
when necessary, such as in academic or professional settings. This flexibility proves that users are not
losing their ability to use language properly, and that they're simply adapting it to different contexts.
Far from destroying language, these changes actually show how we can express complex feelings
quickly and directly, fitting our fast-paced world.Language has always evolved, and the Internet is just
the latest step in this journey. What's important is how well these changes meet our needs.
()30.According to the passage, what do emoticons do?
A.They help express tones in online chats.
B.They disconnect from language changes.
C.They completely ruin language and skills.
D.They simplify English spelling over time.
)31.Why does the writer use the example of the apologetic text message?
A.To show the effectiveness of digital communication.
B.To recommend using "textspeak"in communication.
C.To stress the importance of punctuation in written texts.
D.To exhibit the expression of emotions through"textspeak".
()32.Which of the following might the writer agree?
A.Technology has led to development in our spelling and writing skills.
B.Users have to switch from formal to informal language when texting.
C."Textspeak"allows people to express complex emotions in simple ways.
D.Concerns about language change have been expressed for many centuries.
)33.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain the historical changes in language through various periods over the centuries.
B.To explore the positive aspects of"textspeak"and the effect it has on communication.
C.To argue that technology is making people increasingly lazy in speaking and writing.
D.To criticize the current evolution of language in the digital age and its influence.

Kids in a Cashless World:Are We Losing the Feel of Real Money?
Not too long ago saving money meant putting coins into a piggy bank or hiding notes in a secret
place.Buying snacks meant handing over real cash and feeling every cent you spent. But in today's
world,money doesn't jingle(叮当)or crinkle(起皱)一it clicks.
For many kids, digital payments are becoming part of everyday life. With smartphones or cards,
it's common to buy things without cash.According to NewsHour, about half of kids aged 10 to 12 own a
smartphone. Some families are using apps to help kids manage money.
Digital money is easy to carry, and you don't have to worry about losing notes or carrying coins. But
when money becomes just numbers on a screen,it can feel less real. And when money doesn't feel real,
it's easier to spend too much without thinking.
Scientists say that kids learn best through hands-on experiences. When you count change or hand
over cash, you understand its value more clearly. It feels like something you're giving up.But when you
buy something online or tap your phone, nothing feels like it's missing. That small difference can change
the way kids think about money.
Still, many kids are learning how to manage money in this new digital world. When NewsHour
asked students questions about money, one kid quickly answered that there are 15 quarters in $3.75.
Even without using coins, some kids are excellent at money maths. But managing money isn't just about
maths-一it's also about habits(习惯).
To help kids form good habits, many parents use tools to give their children money for doing chores.
These tools help kids divide(分开)their money into“spend'”,“save”,and“give”,and let parents keep
an eye on how the money is used. Some apps also teach lessons about saving and investing ()
Schools are also taking part, offering classes on money management.
Talking about money at home is just as important.Whether using cash or cards, learning how to plan
for spending and save for future goals helps kids feel confident with money.
Living in a cashless world isn't a bad thing, but it means kids need new skills. With the right support
from parents, teachers,.and technology, they can grow up to be financially(经济上)smart-一even
without ever carrying a coin.
34.What did saving money mean not too long ago?
35.What are the advantages of digital money mentioned in the passage?
36.How can kids understand the value of money more clearly according to scientists?
37.What will you do to manage money in a cashless society?(Give two examples.

题目①
In our life, understanding often begins with a single step
towards each other:I deeply realized this through an experience.
One day,my mom asked me to take out the trash while I
was doing my homework.I didn't want to do it because I thought
she didn't understand how busy I was.I said no and ran to my
room.After a while,I began to cool down.Gradually,I made
a decision to break the silence.I went to her and said sorry. We
communicated sincerely and solved the problem.
This experience taught me that understanding requires
courage to reach out.
